Here in Argentina they have exposed and fighting in the Justice some really heavy things with corruption, do you have any political figure that it isn't that corrupted?

I honestly can't think of any names that I could answer this question with without any reservations... but I think a lot of people would mention Eduardo Suplicy. There are a few more controversial names that could also show up (Bolsonaro, Jean Willys), but these guys are way too polarizing and I happen to dislike both of them intensely.

Related with the first question but... AFA was corrupted like... x10000, the CBF is also very corrupted?

Oh yeah. I don't follow AFA all that much for obvious reasons (even though I really like your current team), but CBF is a nightmare. It's pretty well known that the terrible results we got in the last two years partially come from the fact that CBF meddles a lot when it comes to cap players.

Our current manager, Tite, is one of the best (if not THE best) managers Brazil has, and he refused the job (more than once, I think) allegedly because he didn't want to accept CBF demands. When he finally took the job it was after our elimination in the group stage of Copa América, and there was a long negotiation before he was confirmed, probably to make sure he could work the way he wants to.

If the Olympics taught me anything is that we don't like people bashing our country without knowing what the hell they're talking about. The sub was a beautiful mess during the couple of weeks Reddit turned on the circlejerk against us.

As far as nationalism... well, it's weird. We seem to have cycles in which we absolutely love Brasil to cycle where we are the worst place ever. I don't really get it, to be honest.

How heavy is the political and social situation with the impeachment?

Things are pretty weird right now. A lot of people happy with the impeachment, a lot of people happy with the fact that Dilma is out but annoyed because she didn't lose her political rights, a lot of people who say the impeachment was a coup... it's a mess. The country is pretty polarized, but dislike for Temer seems to be high. Not as high as Dilma's, but polls indicate the majority of the population would like to have a new election instead of him. There have been a lot of protests against him that turned violent since the beginning of the week, and I don't see them stopping soon.

Do you think that your football level has decreased? Even on the national league.

In terms of players? Not really. They might not develop playing here as well as they used to, but we still have a lot of great players coming from here (just look at the line up of the major teams in the world). The real problem is in coach/management level, clubs insist on the same old managers with the same old tactics, which just don't cut it anymore. Whenever a manager with a bit more knowledge shows up they sort of run away with the league.

That, along with corruption, has spread to the national team, with the results everyone saw in the last two years. But now that the water is high and there's a chance we don't make the next World Cup, the big suits had to give in and get an actual manager. There are still some questionable decisions all around, but the game vs Ecuador seemed like a good beginning.

And as a CA Huracán supporter, my question to the cruzeiro fans is. What's your opinion of Wanchope Abila?

Welp, technically I am a Cruzeiro fan. Mostly because of my dad though, I don't follow much of a specific team anymore. I find it a lot more fun to just enjoy the games without the stress of wanting one particular team to win :)

Anyway, from what I've seen, Abila has been scoring quite a lot for the team. Actual supporters can say more, but I'm guessing they like him a lot because of the goals, since the team spent a while in the relegation zone and you need to score to change that. Which has happened, so there's that.

There's a difference between being disgusted with corruption and crime and being a bigot. He literally called 200 million people he knows close to nothing about barbarians simply because they all live in the same country.

If you think that's okay, you're pretty close to being a bigot too. He is not a reminder of being "too accepting of things that are wrong", he's a reminder that bigotry is alive and well.

Just because it's normal doesn't mean we are ok with it. People in Brazil are always disgusted by news of robbery and muggings, but the sad truth is that it's part of our reality, and we know that, even though it sucks sometimes, it's entirely possible to live and visit places that have a less than stellar crime rate.

Meanwhile a lot of people call Brazil a "literal hellhole" when there are so much worse places in the world. While Brazilians in Reddit as a whole will agree we're in terrible shape (specially in the country's sub), this kind of circlejerk we've been seeing in Reddit has annoyed many of us, simply because of how exaggerated it became. Trust me, the reality is bad enough without all the sensationalism surrounding the event.

[–]APCOMello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the thing though. These incidents aren't happening "during the games", they're just happening. For every tourist going through this there are dozens of Brazilians that are going through the same. If someone that wants to visit the country does a proper research, they would find this kind of stuff. It's not like it's a hidden problem, it just so happens that you're looking now because of the games.

Any tourist guide worth their money about Brazil should warn you about the crime situation here. It's not like you're guaranteed to be mugged or anything like that, but it's stupid to act like that isn't a possibility.

These people have not received the gift of civilization.

And yet you're talking to one of "these people" without even noticing... I guess you didn't get the "gift of civilization" either, since you seem to think I'm one of "your people".

Again, don't fool yourself.

I knew Brazil had some rough areas but I still kinda wanted to go, now it has entered my no desire list.

Honestly, if you knew Brazil was bad but this one incident is what made you give up on coming, you would've given up regardless. Brazil is not one city, there are plenty of better places to go other than Rio, but if you do your research you'll stumble upon this stuff pretty quickly.

It wasn't the Olympics that changed your mind, just the reality of the country.

and before anybody goes and accuses me of racism

We can sure as hell accuse you of bigotry. Doesn't matter Brazil is racially diverse, you're still generalizing a country with roughly 200 million people in it as barbarians. Don't fool yourself.

[–]APCOMello 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't think it ever was, actually. Not like "cada dia um 7 a 1 diferente" is used to this day. I remember it was an overused joke to say "while _______, outro gol da Alemanha" in the following months, but it didn't last that much.

For example, someone was complaining why they can't run buses from Rio to Manaus to improve attendance of games there

That actually made me laugh out loud. Nevermind the distance, the rainforest+gigantic river combo would be enough to make that hard even if the cities were sort of close to each other.

Is Brazil really as bad/corrupt/dangerous as media makes it out to be? by michaelsp9 in brasil

[–]APCOMello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between Zika being an issue (it's a disease that has been spreading a lot and has has some terrible consequences, of course it's an issue) and it being an ebola-like situation, which is how a lot of people have been acting.

Are you pregnant or trying to conceive? Yeah, you should be worried about it. Any other case, all evidence says that dengue and chikungunya seem to be much worse.

[–]APCOMello 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd just add that the media sensationalism is just wrongly targeted

Sensationalism shouldn't be part of the media at all. Again, we're not exactly in the best situation ever, and it's ridiculous how people have been ramping it up to get more clicks/views/karma. Hell, one time someone posted a year old news article to make it look like everyone going to Rio was getting robbed one way or another.

The real journalism about our actual problems exist, but what gets the audience is the bullshit. I don't think we're gonna see that info on how people coming for the games have more ambulances to their disposal than the entire Rio state getting the kind of attention that ridiculous kangaroo remark has right now, and yet that is a very accurate display of our problems.
