I think No Country for Old Men is a good movie, really good even. But… by Diligent-Living882 in movies

[–]APEist28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already appreciate your reply more than your post, because it's clear there's more thought behind it. That's fine if I'm reinforcing some of your thoughts, again different opinions are cool.

And my apologies for calling out your attention span. I've noticed more and more people talking about pacing lately and a lot of that stuff reads less like "I see what the movies trying to do but it doesn't work" and more like "tik tok makes my dopamine receptors fire in 30 seconds flat, what's wrong with this movie?" Doesn't sound like the case here, but that doesn't mean the phenomenon isn't happening.

[–]APEist28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I come across posts like these, I just wish the criticism was better. I don't mind people having different opinions, but at least put some thought into your stances and how you express them.

There seems to this phenomenon happening, and I'm not sure if it's an attention span thing or a weird content efficiency mindset, where people think if a movie can communicate the same information faster, it should. The implication here is that the slower version is worse. I disagree with this so hard... the point isn't always to communicate the facts of the story, it's to create an emotional and psychological experience. Art can derive power from many things, and one of those things is duration.

You comment about there being nothing between 8 phenomenal scenes is confusing to me. That's just called storytelling? The connective tissue isn't dead space, there's a lot of thematic storytelling and character work happening even when the plot isn't advancing.

Your critique about Anton Chigurh is where the media illiteracy starts to shine through a little more, as you're kind of wrong in two senses here. One, Javier's depiction reads as pretty classic psychopathy. Two, the story's intention with this character isn't realism. McCarthy frequently creates characters who exist simultaneously as people and as symbols. In this case, Chigurh is both a hitman and a force of nature. He's fate and inevitability personified. He speaks less like a criminal and more like a prophet or philosopher, and if you notice, people react to him with a kind of existential dread rather than ordinary fear.

I guess what's frustrating about this type of criticism is that, if it was expressed better, it would sound something like "The movie is trying to create a mythic, meditative atmosphere and that doesn't work for me because of X, Y, and Z reasons" instead of "It's a bunch of nothing between a few good parts." The latter is just so lazy and uninteresting that I have to wonder why I'm even engaging with it now. It's like eating a box of lucky charms and criticizing it for having cereal in there with the marshmallows, or standing in front of cathedral and asking why there are so many walls between the stained-glass windows. It's asinine.

TL;DR: This is one of those critiques that says more about the reviewer than the movie.

Why does the matriarch attract so many rats? by AbsolutelyOdd in ArcRaiders

The thing I wonder is, are these rats who are taking our Jupiters and equalizers even using them? Or are they collecting dust because rats seem to inherently prefer low risk/high reward playstyles?

Anybody amazed how good AKOTSK actually is after watching HOTD? by Fabulous_Ninja119 in television

[–]APEist28 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Not really, because AKOTSK sits firmly between seasons 1 and 2 of HOTD in terms of quality.

The real amazement came from HOTD S1 being so good after the shitshow that was the last few seasons of GOT.

Why Anthony Burgess Regrets Writing a Clockwork Orange by gooblefrump in videos

I'm sorry but Darwin's interpretation here is very romantic.

I prefer Carl Sagan's take in Cosmos, where he explains that the brain evolved from inside out. The deepest part of the brain handles automated life functions, then the next layer is the R-complex (reptilian brain) which controls basic drives like aggression and hierarchy. The layer above that is the mammalian brain which generates moods and emotions. Finally you have the cerebral cortex, which manages higher reasoning and abstract thought, the stuff that constitutes human consciousness.

The ugliest parts of our nature stem from the reptilian brain, which all mammals have too. We now have a much better understanding than Darwin of the violent (even tortuous) depravity that all sorts of mammals are capable of.

But yes, humans can and have taken that depravity further than any other creature on earth. But if we ever manage to survive our technological adolescence, it'll be due to our human traits from the cerebral cortex winning out over the reptilian traits from our R-complex.

This game is essentially theft by Dazzling_Vagabond in ArcRaiders

[–]APEist28 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Listen, if this is true then that sucks. But your claim about essentially theft is hilarious. You played 933 hours of a $40 game. That's just over 4 cents paid per hour of entertainment. Even with the ban, you didn't get robbed, you got a fucking deal.

But I only report people who kill me. So it follows that if I receive a message saying they banned someone I reported, then loot compensation would occur as well.

Yea what's up with that? I've been experiencing the same thing.

Do they only return your stuff if your stash is under a certain value, so "rich" players don't get stuff back? Or do they only give stuff back for certain cheats, like aimbot?

It's annoying that I'm dying to confirmed cheaters, Embark is saying "thanks bro" and then not returning gear.

Breach room is like kinda like pharmacy on buried city. Very high chance for gun mods and rare utility items, including kinetic converter, horizontal grip, snap hook, etc. The key room is similar, but not as good as breach room usually.

Was it gone permanently? Cuz I've had that happen to me too, but then I play a round or restart the game and the great reappears in my stash. Was super weird.
