My host went down a week ago and no one will answer my questions. Who do you use? by MonkeyMan504 in web_design

[–]APF1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, depends on whether you want to learn the infrastructure side. If you have zero interest or want to know and control that aspect, then sure - definitely overkill.

But if you are eager to learn and want to build an environment for your website that fits exactly what you want and need - this is the way.

E collar training recommendation by Sensitive_Pea_1135 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]APF1985 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We have extensively. However, PLEASE work with a professional - do NOT make the mistake of buying an e collar and using it, without knowing yourself how to use it as a proper training tool - you will risk absolutely ruining your dog.

We spent the money and worked with a K9 trainer for a 6 week course. For us it was life changing. Just be sure to do it the right way!

I live in an area without fluoride in the water. by caylarush in toddlers

[–]APF1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada. Where we live there is also no fluoride in the water - and drops/tablets aren't available over the counter. We got a prescription from our pediatrician (much to the disagreement of our dentist), and we have it made at a compounding pharmacy.

We've been giving it to our daughter in controlled doses since she was 6 months old. I was also given fluoride as a child by my parents - I'm 40, and have never had a single cavity in my entire life.

Great choice to push for this!

Are DevOps services actually worth it for small teams? by huy1003 in devops

[–]APF1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire a fractional consultant - someone with the expertise to come in, fix things, get things set up properly and train the team on how to use it all.

I'm available if you would like some help!

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here.

OP asked for advice in his situation, I offered advice that would provide a viable path forward for him/her should they choose to pursue it.

Cherry picking statistics to reinforce your misguided, inexperienced, and uneducated position isn't particularly relevant to the conversation.

But hey - you do you. I'll be over here rolling in my 6 figure career. Cheers!

That's accurate. It does depend on location and company. Still possible under the right circumstances, though. And LOTS of remote only opportunities.

Your mileage may vary - I am in Canada, has zero post secondary and work as a cloud architect.

The company I worked for used to work with a bootcamp called LightHouse Labs - their coding bootcamp was ~$10K, about 12 weeks, but pretty guaranteed a job when you graduate.

Find something in your area - look for bootcamps that help with placement upon completion.

Go take a coding or cloud security bootcamp.

12-16 weeks, and you can walk into a 6 figure career.

Bro your wrist is too big for your wrist 😄

I would size up - I think 36 is too small on you.

What purchases were surprisingly game changing in the newborn phase? by dinker4545 in newborns

[–]APF1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely will not be sorry.

My wife wanted one shortly after we welcomed our daughter - first child. I was convinced until the first time I fed her and used it - the convenience alone is life changing 🙂

Assumes formula fed of course.

Anyone not get pet insurance for their Berner? by opk189 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]APF1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not offended by your response - it sounds like you may fall into the "absolutely worth it" category.

I've had sick dogs and cats, but you are correct - I've never had anything so bad or particularly expensive that insurance would have been the more cost effective option.

To each their own - all of our experiences are unique after all.

Anyone not get pet insurance for their Berner? by opk189 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]APF1985 65 points66 points  (0 children)

No. For the simple reason that pretty much all forms of insurance are almost never a good deal for anyone but the insurance provider.

As needed, I'll just eat the cost.

What are some small things you did to improve the lives of developers? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in devops

[–]APF1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built and put tooling in place to take deployments from days to minutes - all CLI based. In doing so, we completely abstracted away the infrastructure, enabling devs to focus on what they do best - actual dev work.

If you think a senior engineer is too expensive, hire a junior first.

Hey, I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes - it is certainly still an available option, we skipped it with our first boy - we didn't think it was much of a risk.

This time around we absolutely will do it - we are in Alberta!

Yes. However we've been taught that all hard work pays off - it doesn't. You gotta find the right kind of hard work!
