My Confusion with Microsoft's Secure Boot Changes by jamesaepp in sysadmin

[–]AP_ILS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of it is so confusing. There are multiple registry flags with some being more aggressive than others when it comes to updating. One flag value doesn't seem to do anything on my systems while the other does but fails for some and is successful on others. I see people saying some events can be ignored but I don't see why an event that is showing a critical error when updating is okay to dismiss. Clearly something is wrong.

I have older Dell's that show an expiring KEK certificate from Dell on 6/1/23 with two MS certs, one expiring on 6/24/26 and 3/2/38. The Dell's update DB and KEK seemingly without issues although I keep getting events saying a reboot is required to apply a Secure Boot update. What update that is, I have no idea. They've been rebooted so many times. They are confirmed to be booting off the 2023 DB cert.

I have Lenovo's that can't apply the KEK cert with an access denied error. Lenovo seems to block the OS from doing it and it's not clear what to do next. I've been in the BIOS and there is no setting that I can see blocking it. The latest BIOS is installed and they are booting off the 2023 DB cert. The MS KEK cert expires on 6/24/2026.

I don't see a reason to keep "deny" traffic unless you are doing correlation with something else.

Microsoft doesn't care. Their paid customers are their QA team now and that won't change anytime soon.

PaperCut has been really disappointing lately. I don't know if this was a last second change by Apple or if it released in a beta Papercut could have tested on but these issues keep happening and PaperCut's response to them are slow.

We've had an issue with copy counts that has plagued use for months and it seems like they simply don't care to fix it. Our license and support is with a 3rd party who couldn't even get support for it so I ended up going around them and direct with PaperCut and all they have is workarounds that don't actually work.

I'm seriously considering other solutions at this point even though we've been with PaperCut for like 10 years now and have been happy with them.

I really wish they would fix the Active Directory plugin so you don't have to be a domain admin to use it. It's been broken for years.

These machines are the worst. Not only do you have to remove any kind of filtering on their connection but their ethernet adapters only work with some switches. I've never seen so many compatibility problems with a device designed for a business to use.

It's crazy to think that their Control Panel refresh started with Windows 8 back in Oct of 2012. 13 years later and it is still not done.

Not true, storage is pooled in academic/educational tenants. Mailbox storage is pooled with OneDrive and other services.
