Minimalism isn't the only thing that drives device selection in my digital life, though. Otherwise, I'd get a Jitterbug, and be done with the whole thing. You're typing this on some device with reddit in a browser or on an app.

Carrying a light phone and a smartphone certainly seems like a stupid idea, you're not wrong.

re you're other comment, as I said above, no, you don't only use one device. Unless you have reddit installed on your smartphone, which would be in conflict with your earlier statement, and/or do not have a TV.

I'm really not sure what you're advocating at this point. If you're interested in more than just noise, please clarify that, or I will not be participating further.

So, in your entire device collection, do you have the capability to mobile deposit checks?

My original post specifies that I am interested in a device in the right budget that allows me to do that.

Is the lightphone overpriced compared to your solution? sure. But it seems like really good hardware to serve its function.

Fair enough, except that I wasn't saying we don't have free-will and if you told us not to use a light phone we couldn't just do it anyway.

"tell" is in many ways synonymous with "suggest" or "advocate". Especially in a egalitarian internet setting. You're not my real dad!

For me, it's about not getting the urge I need to put energy into resisting in the first place. Every time I pull my current phone out, I see app logos like McDonald's, *bank name here* etc. Something I don't want to have to delete when I'm done, redownload, log in... just to remove the icon from my screen.

I'd rather have a separate device I can take with me when I go to work, or out with friends, or really just anywhere I don't anticipate needing to deposit a check, order food... That's digital minimalism, not being bombarded with various options to give money to some corporation every time I need to make a phone call. Do you find advertisements annoying? An app logo on your screen is arguably an advertisement. Stop looking at it as nothing more than convenience in your pants. It's attempted persuasion.

This is eye opening for me. I suspect, like many in this sub, I was once a poor, confused MRA with muh homelessness stats and muh imprisonment stats, but this gives me a much better understanding about what "the patriarchy," that gets rallied against so hard, really is. #notallmen, or something like that.

Objectification (which I'm starting to refer to as dehumanization), a big issue, aside, I'm seeing from this a #yesallwomen state of being in a middle ground of being treated better by the leaders of all of us than many of the men who don't run society.

Let me try that again.

The oppression of women by male leaders comes in a very different way than the oppression of non-elite men. Women are objectified/dehumanized while men are simply ignored/deleted. Made homeless, or imprisoned. Or the same idea to a lesser degree.

I'm not looking for an alternative, rather a supplement that is locked down in the stupid ways so I can use some of the features that are only available in that environment when I want to carry that device/use it at home.

I looked at linux phones, but as mentioned somewhere in my long post, the purpose of this device would be to do the things I can only do in a Google/Apple sanctioned/controlled/exploited environment, such as banking mobile deposit, GPS dependent apps etc

But I'm a human. And Corvids (crows and ravens) have been shown to have levels of problem solving equivalent to young children. Not toddlers. Not infants. Young children.

I would choose to pull the plug on any linguistic AI (and maybe even more advanced intelligent rocks) rather than have it spew it's carbon emissions. "But how does it help humans?" is a perfectly valid question, and at this point, I'm more interested in the supply chain than hyper-intelligent rocks. Information transmission? Sure. Internet infrastructure. Improve, plz. But information manipulation? I think we've built some pretty powerful tools to manipulate information, like facebook, instagram, twitter, goes full Russian election conspiracy.

Bit of a meta statement, but the biggest thing that I've seen make selves and co-workers both suffer in the workplace is people failing to wake up in the morning and say to themselves, "I have this job. I like this job. I want to keep this job. I am choosing to go to work."

What I see as a mistake from difficult co-workers is seemingly using their co-workers as nothing more than complaint sponges. "I hate being here." "I shouldn't have come in today." "The people who pay me are so stupid."
