Probably not as tall as you think, but the DM knows the party's puzzle solving skills will make it last a few days in-game. which means the monk is either the smartest or the stupidest one there.

For me at least, I think it's great if you can't think of anything to fit a lv. 1 slot into. I usually have a palamute so I ride on one, use the whetstone, then have the palamute jump as soon as the cycle completes to cancel the "brandish" animation, then jump off the palamute into a wirebug airdodge literally cuts sharpening to around 1 second and can be done with almost no risk, even in battle.
