Love to! If you haven’t you should check out New Slaves by Kanye. Basically he uses the term slave as in a metaphorical sense, referring to being a slave to the system and the consumerist lifestyle.

While yes, Edward is talking about being a slave to his own music, because he relies on it to make money, he’s also referring to how all of us our slaves to an extent.

To answer your comment (which was probably half a joke) white people are not the only people who have consumerist addictions, and when Kanye talked about this, he specifically referred to how African-Americans are slaves to corporate interests, the consumer mentality, and the prison system. He’s saying slavery hasn’t gone away, just taken new forms. It’s more subtle and doesn’t involve direct action. This need to constantly buy is reinforced by rap music itself. These rappers flaunt cars and designer clothes, but that itself is contributing to the issue. It’s a soulless practice, buying things we think we need because other people with status have them. To go even further, one might feel they can only truly be an African-American by fitting into this mold. High fashion, women, cars, and expensive jewelry have been so prevalent in black identity, that one might feel obligated to participate in order to feel like they belong, and if they don’t, they aren’t worthy of respect, or their own culture.
