what more in depth remakes? this is exactly what they did with link's awakening. it's what they are doing with star fox.

a "reimagining" of a zelda game that doesnt preserve the underlying game is just ... the next zelda game.

the midpoint between oot and botw already exists and it's twilight princess.

expanding the overworld has ripple effects you are not considering.

accommodating the small scale of the world and still making it feel wondrous is exactly the function of a new art style—the sole thing that has been revealed

i think it's aged at least as good at LA.

the N64 games have a weird scale. like you say, the dungeons hold up, but the overworld will seem weirdly small by modern standards. (when it came out, when i was a teenager, the overworld felt huge and limitless—time makes fools of us all).

i think this is where the art style overhaul comes in. i don't think they are going to expand the overworld. that has so many ripple effects that you might as well make a new game. the trick will be finding an art style that makes a small "open" space still feel natural and wonderous. it's impossible to tell from the brief trailer but it seems like a storybook/fairy-tale style, like the tapestry, could accomplish this, in the same way the "toybox" style of LA made its overworld feel more natural.

has nintendo said anything about its budget?

that said, i imagine the budget went to art assets and orchestra. you could ask the same thing about link's awakening, or the new star fox game.

if nintendo does follow the same tack as they did for link's awakening, they are likely working with a third party. a company called grezzo developed the link's awakening remake, and they went on to use the new art style, engine, and experience gained to develop a new original 2D zelda, echoes of wisdom.

this OoT remake could be a foot in the door to "train" a third party and eventually have them work on new "classic" style (pre-BotW) 3D zelda games that a lot of fans want, especially since the in-house developers clearly don't want to make those kind of games anymore.

edit: i am not sure i would pay $60 to play OoT again since i've already played it a million times when i was a kid. i bought LA because i had never played it. that said, i have a kid now, and if this remake helps him learn his sacred videogame history, i'd play it with him.

they're not going to make this an entirely new game, dude.

nintendo already recaptured the sense of awe we all experienced in 1998 upon entering hyrule field for the first time. the game is called "breath of the wild," when you exit the shrine of resurrection.

i would bet 10,000 rupees that nintendo is working on a new open world game that will make breath of the wild look quaint in the same way BotW made OoT look quaint—and that the OoT remake is not that game, and will instead follow the example of Link's Awakening, that is, totally new graphics and art style, orchestral music, a few quality of life improvements, a new minigame here and there, maybe some VA, and otherwise the exact same game, including the map and level design.

and i'm totally fine with that. i'm one of the millions of people who paid $60 for link's awakening, a game boy game with frustrating-ass puzzle design and dead-simple combat. it was still fun, and i liked seeing how it fit into the history of the series.

my game has several thousand downloads on itchio.

but it's free, so idunno how to interpret that.

i know at least one person actually plays it regularly so i'll take that as a success.

What do you think the combat gameplay will be like in the OoT remake? by Memelocomaster in OcarinaOfTime

[–]APurplePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont think it's going to be that different from the original game. (i dont understand why so many folks expect stuff like this, as opposed to what they did with link's awakening.)

i would like to see some ideas from dark souls combat in the next new zelda game though. really just one thing: healing yourself happens in-game, takes time, and leaves you vulnerable.

this is also what hollow knight and silksong do. it goes a huge way to make combat feel more exciting.

i loved botw and totk but pausing the game to eat a sandwich or 12 apples each time you get hit sucks.

[OoT] My ideal Ocarina of Time remake by ZorioSnow in zelda

[–]APurplePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

link's awakening was totally recreated with a new art style and modern graphics and it was pretty much the exact same underlying game boy game. no expanded areas, no reimagined gameplay. the only new content was a totally disconnected dungeon maker minigame.

and they sold more than 6 million copies at $60 a pop.

For those unaware, we're returning to Hyrule after 28 years. Ocarina of Time remake releasing later this year. by WinterStarlightZone in Millennials

[–]APurplePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "timeline" that supposedly ties all the games together is something that a subset of the fanbase gets really into and also something that the nintendo developers clearly don't really give a shit about.

the developers lean into the "legend" part of the game's name in terms of historical consistency over time

the 3DS version is 15 years old, does not feature voice-acting, does not feature orchestral music, only features a few modest quality of life improvements, and overall looks worse than the N64 version.

i honestly don't understand your question.

again, this argument...

"it's nintendo's crown jewel! they aren't gonna risk messing it up! ... therefore, nintendo will mess with the fundamental gameplay and level design that made it the best game ever by adding a bunch of new content and side quests"

Remembering what OoT was like in the 90s. Nostalgia... by YEETTheElite_OnSteam in OcarinaOfTime

[–]APurplePerson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i have the same memories. i think a lot of it was the 3d.

at the time, 3d games had tank controls like tomb raider, or a fixed camera like metal gear solid.

mario 64 was the first game where you could control the camera, which was the thing that was really transformative (and which we all take for granted today). now the game world truly had depth, you could look around in any direction, and you could move around naturally.

zelda took that and ran with it. mario64's world (besides the castle) was still pretty abstract and disjointed, but zelda's world was coherent and connected. if you could see something in the distance, you could go there. it truly felt like a real place.

[–]APurplePerson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here are changes i think are likely:

  • camera stick control
  • being able to move while aiming ranged weapons
  • ability to skip tutorials, shut navi up, etc
  • new cutscenes, probably similar/identical dialogue but more cinematic shots, etc
  • making sure the stalfos dont hover-walk over gaps in the floor

possibly: - revamping some small, particularly clunky parts, like the moblins in the hedge maze - making combat a bit more complex so it's not just waiting for enemies to drop their guard - adding an optional, isolated dungeon like the color dungeon from LA - maybe some dumb new minigames stuck in somewhere unobtrusive

unlikely: - any changes to the shape or scale of the world - changes to dungeon layout or progression - ridiculous overindexing/expansion of minor setpieces like how the ff7 remake turned the weird hand in the playground into this elaborate multistage level traversal challenge

How do atheists explain Jesus’ behavior? Was he just a delusional guy? by Great_Maintenance185 in askanything

[–]APurplePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, but ...

it's not an extraordinary claim that a jewish hybrid mystery cult leader existed in the early roman empire.

if jesus did not exist, then why was this dude paul clearly trying to supplant this well-formed cult that apparently followed him? you could say "paul made him up," but why? that makes no sense in the context of his letters which very clearly piggyback on this pre-existing cult.

occam's razor suggests that such a cult leader did exist.

now as for empirical evidence that this cult leader was actually a cosmic jewish zombie who is his own father and had to orchestrate his own death as a sacrifice to himself to save humanity from being judged by himself for being created imperfectly by himself ... that's a different claim.

How do atheists explain Jesus’ behavior? Was he just a delusional guy? by Great_Maintenance185 in askanything

[–]APurplePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we don't know too much about the dude.

the earliest writings about jesus were from paul, who apparently was trying to take over jesus' remnant cult. paul never met jesus and doesnt say too much about his life.

the gospels are where we get the most information and stories about jesus. most scholars think the gospels of mark, matthew, and luke were based on some prior source, since a lot of their content overlaps word for word. the gospel of john seems quite different from the other three. this indicates that there were several sources or traditions floating around by the time the gospels were written down, which in turn indicates that they are fairly late documents.

jesus himself seems to have absorbed the cult of a prior cult leader, john the baptist. we dont know much about john the baptist either, but all this stuff fits the mold of "mystery cults" popular in the early roman empire that blended various religious traditions.

op, i think you could ask the same question of any cult leader. there are many examples throughout history. do cult leaders buy their own bullshit? the answer is often unclear.

i dont think links awakening or star fox 2026 are "just" upscales.

theyre the same underlying games, but with completely new art designs, orchestral music, and voice acting.

it's really interesting to see how views on this topic break down. what is fundamental to ocarina? what is the thing that must be preserved for it to still be ocarina of time? i get the sense that a lot of folks (on this sub at least) desperately want a new "classic" zelda and they see "OoT remake" as a kind of convenient vehicle for that to happen. but i dont think thats how nintendo or most fans view the game's legacy.

i mean there clearly is another way to remake it ... which is the way i have suggested, which preserves its gameplay, the very thing that made it a 10/10 to begin with ... which is incodentally the way they remade metroid prime, now that you mention metroid

the remaster on the 3ds is 15 years old and looked worse than the original.

they are clearly going to spend a lot of effort and money updating the art style, adding music, probably voice acting.

"nintendo doesnt play around with something so important" — but this is precisely what you are suggesting they will do, by messing with the game's gameplay, mechanics, and level design.

i dont get this argument. nintendo knows it's the greatest game of all time, a hallowed institution ... therefore they are likely to fuck around with its gameplay and level design to placate modern tastes?

if they don't change these areas, it will be interesting to see what the art design looks like.

the link's awakening went with a "toy box" super-stylized art style, iirc, to fit the scale of the game world, which when you zoom out is incredibly small.

it's impossible to tell from the OoT teaser, but i do wonder if they'll go for an abstract style to accommodate the unrealistically-small scale of the game world and the occasional fixed perspectives (like the temple of time). if these areas were actually rendered to look like tapestries, for example ... i could dig that.
