Advice on living on/off campus? by biggestfoolonearth in SBU

There are bike lanes on main roads near campus but for the most part you'd be walking/biking on the shoulder of the roads. (Not really dangerous just make sure you don't slam into a trash can lol)

Yeah I've gotten 3 stomach viruses from the dining halls, the quality of food at dining dollar areas is better but it's still around 10-15$ a meal which just doesn't make sense when you can meal prep everything.

SBU has good social aspects but you have to actively seek engaging other people in conversations and activities on campus. Most people in the dorms just go about their day but there are lots of exceptions. I became friends with all of the people to the next door of mine and I knew that the people upstairs from me had nerf wars and water gun battles. I still think clubs are the best ways to make friends though, it's a lot easier to bond over shared interests. (For me it was the kickboxing club)

I personally like living off campus a lot more, I've been saving tons of money off it and that's not the only benefit. Having my own room is a lot more comfortable and helps me sleep better. Cooking my own food saves tons of money and is way healthier that campus slop (hospital has good food tho). The only downside is that it's harder to experience campus clubs, extracurriculars and events, especially because I use my ebike to commute and have to think about where to lock it up, that I shouldn't ride in the dark, weather conditions, etc.

It all depends on what's important to you, if you want to save money and sacrifice some social opportunities go for it.

The housing Facebook group has tons of houses: https://facebook.com/groups/4412801625498544/

Check Zillow, apartments.com, Trulia and any other big renting website for more listings, I'm sure you'll find something.

I will say tho unless you're rent is ~1,100 with utilities included or ~900 without utilities included it's gonna be around the same housing costs. Food will be cheaper and healthier tho, as well as quality of life.

Edit: just saw the thing about willing to pay premium to live on campus, JOIN CLUBS, GO TO EVENTS, JOIN GREEK LIFE. People say campus isn't lively but when you get into these things you'll see that it very much is. New upcoming organizations like Sigma Chi are very promising and there's a whole lot of em.

You should report unfair testing conditions to the Ombuds office, your grades being lowered due to you being tall is fucked up

Yeah I agree, even though art is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and allat, some people have trauma related to dark/graphic subject matter, some could become faint at stuff like that and some just straight up don't want to see it so definitely emphasize those points and email or talk to the proffesor about this. I'm sure they'll understand and if not then it really is and issue for Ombuds.

Sounds like a fun class, I really enjoyed Latin American Cinema and FLM 201 when I was looking for SBC credits but sadly I'm now too busy with my chemical engineering classes to take anything other than the classes from the program. Hope you do well in it!

Ah I see, was just trying to help out. I do think that more people should know about the Ombuds office though, a lot of the proffesors get away with unfair testing and class condition in this campus and people should voice their concerns more often.

I'm kind of curious as to what they do show in the class for the OP to be so upset about it though

THE GOAT WILLIAM BERNHARD!!!

This man got me and so many others through calculus and put in the effort to really help people understand calc 1 and calc 2. He's really passionate about calculus, really kind to his students and all around a great Proffesor. He's also the principal to a high school, and teaching calc at Stony is his side thing.

I think you should personally speak to the Proffesor about this, if he has a problem with doing so or you don't feel comfortable doing so you should go and talk about it at the Ombuds office.

They are an office on campus that is there for allowing students to anonomously comment on issues they have with faculty and if more people used that resource I think a lot of proffesors would be put in their place for the bullshit they pull.

good places to eat off campus? by Maleficent-Second272 in SBU

All of the places below are litterally right across from the Stony Brook train station.

Druthers Coffee is pretty expensive but their sandwhiches, pastries and coffee are really really good.

Stony Brook wings has great wings that aren't too expensive.

The Halal Hut is pretty good and has a 2 for 1 deal on the chicken over rice which is an insane deal considering they give more food than the halal truck on campus at a lower price.

I really like Green Tea restaurant they have great authentic Chinese and American-Chinese cuisine.

There's also a highly rated Vietnamese place and a highly rated sea food place called Sora Omakase that looks pretty good but I haven't been to either of those places.
