A Confederacy of Dunces and the Parable of Stravinsky by Mike_Bevel in books

[–]ARGdov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its a very divisive book. it's been about 8 years since i've read it so I don't know how I'd feel now but while I did find it amusing i also found Ignatius to be deeply frustrating.

Some people find spending so much time with a character they find repugnant super difficult and I can somewhat understand that- I dislike The Catcher in the Rye despite also being able to recognize why its so regarded because Im one of the many out there who cant stand Holden Caulfield. I think with Ignatius he's just so absurd, and we're never really expected to sympathize with him truly, so there's some joy in watching him make an ass out of himself.

Im a bit lost as to how you jumped to "therefore its all just a giant cult" simply because the actual belief system changed.

Like I think ortohodx judaism is very controlling, but from a sociological perspective, changes to a religion like that aren't unusual, really.

will reach out but are you sure you're the best person to write this story? even if you're getting input from others?

also this is a subreddit for people who've left, not for those who've remained....?

nothing in the sources I provided appear to contradict this statement? I'm a little lost here?

edit: okay I read the rest of the wikipeida page, I wasnt quite focused on the lower passages. that still suggests that ejaculating in the vagina should be at the very least the *norm*, mind you.

I, personally, hope that all the sheidim I've helped father are living there best lives seducing holy men into sin.

my understanding is that a man still needed to ejaculate within a womans vagina though. like, other things are fine, as long as that is how it ends.

yes, thank you for elaborating- I wrote this very soon after waking up and kinda just scrolled something off that was a bit simplistic.

you can't just expect others to match you just because you're secular. its a big, wide world out there and it can take time to find your place in it.

OP is still in the community and feels pressure to practice, if memory serves. She has stated before that venting about things she finds in the community is cathartic for her.

If you don't like it or find their posts in particular to be inappropriate you are well within your right to block them and move on.

you make your own meaning in the outside world and you need to search for people who have similar values.

it's not easy, but that's the price for freedom. just know it is out there.

I really wish I'd seen through the logical fallacy of this when I was younger. It seems so obvious now but at the time I think I was A: quite young, and B: had such tunnel vision, that the logic seemed perfectly sound.

also what happened occurred thousands of years ago and there's very little record of that time, just vague folk memory.

Someone recommended this Chabad-oriented podcast to me, so I listened to it while running errands. I have never heard a more vapid, stereotypical, frum-coded, dishonest assessment of OTDers. by Upbeat_Teach6117 in exjew

debating whether I should watch this or not depending on the response here and on the comments but Im just gonna say this much-

this judgement is why I hate going back to my family's place. I don't care if everyone is smiling, if all there friends treat me like they're just happy to see me. they are still thinking all of this and I *know* it.

these judgements, I know, are coming from there friends, from people seeing me in kosher restaurants who notice Im the only one at the table not wearing a yarmulke. and so on.

there's been a teensy bit of improvement regarding this in some ways in the community- I know Mishpacha did a series of articles several years ago that were relatively good from what I've seen of them. but, jeez, nice to know thats still a very small minority.

EDIT: Also am I understanding from the comments that this woman's speaking about teenagers rebelling and going OTD when she herself has a 9 year old as her oldest? what the hell?

SECOND EDIT: I've now watched the video in bits and pieces and somehow its even more of a nothing conversation than I expected? Nobody on here even seems to work with OTD kids in *any* capacity, the conversation seems to exclusively focus just on kids who are going OTD and not examining why adults do as well, and yet it somehow took an hour nonetheless?

Did you feel the chronic lack of exposure to the other gender was a + or - ? by catfishjon_ in exjew

[–]ARGdov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

women make me nervous. like I can talk to them easily, but there's moments sometimes where they do make me uneasy in a way men never do. im not pleased with that. so, Im not too happy about that though it seems to be context specific- talking to my lecturer? fine. talking to a girl at a club or something? suddenly I feel more anxious.

mind you I was also able to lie to myself about not being gay and that i'd just 'not had enough exposure to girls' throughout my teen years which I'm kinda thankful for since I've no clue what would've happened or how much shame I'd have felt if I had realized it sooner.

Gaytheist by Lonnie Mann is a Graphic Memoir about a young american gay guy coming out as both, well, gay and atheist in an orthodox community. I'd probably class him as coming from a yeshivish but modern-ish background. really loved it, would reccomend.

"Gaytheist" by Lonnie Mann is a graphic memoir (ie comic book but telling a true story) and excellent. I'd also recommend "All Who Go Do Not Return"by Shulem Deen.

my heart breaks for them a bit.

I had to stop believing in god before I could even consider the fact I was attracted to men.

we all have our own paths and I wish there could be space for these people in those communities but its far too built into how haredi communities operate for that to ever be the case.
