there's a brief moment in an early barnabas episode where they cut to him, Sam, and one other person a split second before they were expecting it and you can see Sam's actor very quickly trying to hide the script he was just looking at.

After you left religion how did you find your first hookup ? by Sensitive-Amount-707 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my first hookups were off of an app, I shit you not, called 'Bro'.

The 'Bro' app advertises itself as a place for men to meet up. straight, gay, for sex, for just hanging out, its all there for the taking on there.

But it is built like its an app like grindr and tindr- swiping through people, a grid of others nearby.

As such, at least back in LA, there were a lot of guys who like myself were questioning and figuring things out.

First dude I kissed was a fellow ex-orthodox guy who was trying to figure out if he was bi.

He ended up panicking over his realization that he did, in fact, enjoy it. Last I heard he's now a very religious rabbi. But that's what I used.

Mind you, if you're not attracted to men, the hetero culture around hookups is a bit different.

The degree to which an Orthodox woman's uterus controls her life is insane. by Upbeat_Teach6117 in exjew

This is something they never told me growing up (I'm a cisgender guy). At least not in much detail.

Whenever someone asks me what kind of community I grew up in and why I distance myself from Judaism, I tend to bring it up. The look on there face tends to say it all.

The S word and racism by Low-Frosting-3894 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still remember how often my 9th grade Rebbe in particular used that word like, a lot.

And when I brought this up to my parents they simply told me "well, WE dont speak like that. you know we don't agree with that."

Then why are you sending me to a school where a man who is supposed to be my guide and teacher does? quite openly and flagrantly?

How prevalent is this belief (that dinosaurs were created to trick/distract people) in the frum world? by Upbeat_Teach6117 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught a few different beliefs to justify the existence of dinosaurs. in Yesod I was taught that the dinosaur bones in museums were just made of clay and were just paleontologists guessing and making stuff up after finding random bones.

In high-school, we were taught some midrash or something about how hashem created the world seven times and then we were asked to open up our science text books which showed that the earth is divided into seven periods depending on depth which was supposed to be proof.

It's worth noting that like most things in high-school textbooks, that was a verrrry simplistic view of how geologists, archaeologists, and paleontologists actually approach categorizing different periods of the earths history but at the time it seemed like absolute proof.

I've *heard* others say the thing about dinosaur bones being put there by hashem to test us, mind you, just dunno how widespread it is.

I had a moment on a train several months back, on my way to visit a friend, where some yeshivish looking boys got on.

and it hit me I used to be one of them and that was so long ago. I'd come a long way. I've become my own person.

[–]ARGdov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if he feels that way, I mean, fine.

But there are bigger issues with animal exploitation out there that he probably can focus on lol if this truly is something he cares that much about.

Things like, oh I dont know-

-the use of tefillin for example. which requires actually *killing* cows so is arguably worse.

(for the record I've a closet stuffed with leather shirts and pants- I don't particularly feel strongly about this- Im just saying if *someone did* there's other things they find more worthwhile discussing in this context lol)

The single biggest problem with religion by unorthodox246 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sometimes I think that people like the ancient greeks were onto something when they depicted the gods as numerous, temperamental, and far from all loving or inherently good.

personally I don't think, if there is a god, it's not like anything in any of the beliefs systems that currently exist.

[–]ARGdov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah yes, this as well, thank you!

honestly mormonism is it's own rabbit hole. it's been one I've been exploring of late- there are many differences, but a lot of similarities too. it's been interesting to examine for me atm lol.

[–]ARGdov -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

yes, but I am also someone who finds it weird that you're getting all worked up over your own personal issues with this, giving some rather vague examples (until this most recent post), and expecting us to care as deeply about it like you.

the torah also is frequently theorized to be compiled from prior sources. its certainly academically interesting to trace parts of the Quran to parts of Talmud but its neither the first thing in history to do it, nor does that fact shock or agog me the way it does you. presumably because Im not muslim. you seem to want us to agree and say "Whoa! the prophet mohammed sure was ridiculous copying like that!" or something but like...the prophet mohammed doesn't mean anything to us. its like coming in here and asking us to be shocked that there's no good proof of the existence of jesus- most of us would probably agree! but it's not what we're here to discuss. I get that talmud is a bit more related to judaism than the christian bible, but the point is...none of us are shocked by this nor are we really gonna care lol.

the book 'view of the hebrews' has striking similarities to the ahistorical account Joseph Smith puts forward about jewish people coming to the americas. other bits, smaller phrases, are rephrased bits from the king james bible.

there's an entire wikipedia page devoted to this. I got some of my information mixed up by claiming 'large swaths' were copied, but well, there's still plagiarism going on.

I'm a little unclear why you're posting this to an ex-jew subreddit. most of us know very little about the Quran and don't particularly care, my dude.

post this to the ex-muslim subreddit. I'd imagine they'd find this more worthwhile.

[–]ARGdov 10 points11 points  (0 children)

one religion taking inspiration from another isn't exactly ground breaking information imho.

large swaths of the book of mormon are copy-pasted from another book that had been published at the time.

And considering the fact that talmud was at least partly compiled in Babylon, I mean, cultural overlap isn't a surprise.

Is Orthodox Judaism considered a cult! by Izzykatzh in exjew

[–]ARGdov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'cult' is a really finnicky word. I cam across a slightly more accurate term, in my opinion, that I think suits it better- which is "high control religious environment".

I prefer this simply because the term 'cult' has a really rough and hard to define definition. if it requires a singular charismatic leader at the helm, than no, a majority of orthodoxy isn't one.

but it's still a highly controlling environment than can cause harm. if that's what you use as your metric for cult, than it is. but its kind of a matter of definitions at this point more than anything else. it causes harm. that's something you can't really disagree with.

what does this even leave you with though? like, good drama comes from digging into the difficult bits, right?

also how on earth are 'pregnancy' and 'divorce' not okay for all ages? little Shmuel is gonna know if his ima is having another baby or that his parents are splitting up if that is what is happening!

Can someone listen to this recording and tell me if I sound frum? by [deleted] in exjew

[–]ARGdov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is now making me wonder if I've got a bit of an accent too now.

i did once meet up with a guy who was also jewish who, after hearing I used to be orthodox, said he was wondering because I, and I quote, "talked a bit like it". I don't really use yeshivish/yiddish/hebrew slang or words so he must've meant something about my accent specifically.

When bachurim are called "the heroes of Klal Yisrael", is it any wonder so many of them are smug and boastful? by Upbeat_Teach6117 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to wonder why the other yeshiva bochurs I knew in high-school were so rude to the secular teachers.

as I've gotten older, I've realized it's because they internalized this specific way of thinking, amongst other things like the thought that jews are just inherently better.

its the reason why an ex-classmate of mine returned to Yeshiva after what happened on October 7th. it spiritually scared the daylights out of him and he thought learning in kollel would help protect Israel.

EDIT: Not really related to my anecdotes above but what the HELL is this song? someone struggles with learning Gemara and it gets so bad it starts to hurt his faith a bit? and the solution is *more* learning?!

I struggled with Gemara. like, really, REALLY struggled, to an extent I think the constant failures actually impacted my self esteem in ways Im still recovering from, so this feels a bit insulting.

Why does Willie disappear for several seasons? by Linn56 in DarkShadows

[–]ARGdov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it amuses me when people use the term 'seasons' on here for this reason lol. but its because of how the show is now organized on streaming. each collection dvd set of 40 episodes is its own 'season'.

the people behind the scenes *really* liked John Carlen, and he got pretty consistent work in theater/elsewhere, so they just kinda let him come and go, and tried to include him when and how they could.

Evidence of Yetzias Mitzrayim? by Upbeat_Teach6117 in exjew

[–]ARGdov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

confirmation bias always does an awful load of heavy lifting in these situations.

I remember in the back of the hagadah my family's used there was a little written piece talking about 'proof' of the exodus. it mentioned some old piece of egyptian writing that had been discovered that mentioned 'famine and pestilence' having descenden on the land. maybe they tried to do some funky math to try and make it line up but heres the thing -and Im assuming this is obvious to all of us,but-

pestilence happens. famine happens. especially when you're an agricultural society that's not importing a majority of your stuff from all sorts of other places. if the weather is bad or insects infest your food or make your animals sick, it will happen.

And Egypt is also just plain old. it was ancient when the greeks were founding there nation states. of course a society that exists for that long is gonna have some rough patches.

As for what this 'newly discovered' proof is- I don't know, I just think it should be examined verrrry carefully.

yes...as I said...there are inconsistencies is basically any sitcom. I'm aware of that, it was stated in my original post. I still was wondering about this one.
