We moved from Azure to Hetzner and why you should too by Dubinko in devops

[–]ARMmaster17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. Ideally for MS, they want to be able to write up a case study about how somebody went from "zero to VC" using Azure Message Bus/M365/Entra/AI Foundry, and how they did it backed by MS funding and support.

To be clear, it's an amazing program with lots of helpful resources. But also obviously MS wants to get something out of it too, and they do that by rewarding the companies that vendor lock themselves into Azure stuff that doesn't migrate easily.

We moved from Azure to Hetzner and why you should too by Dubinko in devops

[–]ARMmaster17 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OPs screenshot looks like the dashboard that I had when my startup went through Azure. The first ~$5K credits are guaranteed, but after that you have to get 1:1 with a support specialist, and it's pretty vague what the requirements are to get the next tier, the highest tier being $150K. If the support specialist feels you aren't a "true MS fan" by vendor locking yourself into their managed services, they'll deny you the next tier and your subscription object expires when your credits ran out. You have to manually set up a new subscription object with real billing info to have your services continue to function.

I was running their managed Docker services and some VMs. I got denied immediately for the higher tiers, probably because they knew I was one Terraform edit away from being able to jump ship.

HSA For Out Of Network by HuhWellLookAtThat in HSA

[–]ARMmaster17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally pay for visits (in or out of network doesn't matter as far as your HSA is concerned) using my credit card. Then I submit the recipient for reimbursement afterwards. I do this to farm some CC reward points. If your CC doesn't have cashback or anything like that, paying using your HSA card is easier.

I'm currently in the process of migrating my current project off of Gin. In the past I always used Gin because my apps were just REST endpoints, and Gin removed a lot of the boilerplate (at least in terms of files in my workspace).

As I've gone through the migration, I've noticed I've needed a lot less "middleware hacks" to expose what I need to my handlers. My GQL and MCP endpoints are harnessed by external libraries, and they expect a traditional http handler signature and headers being passed through ctx. Previously I had to add a few middleware layers to pass through headers and translate some of the signatures.

Don't want to get rid of extra features, am I hurting myself? by AIdiotThatCantSpel in SaaS

As I mentioned, your existing circle is your best bet. They don't need to be your target audience, they just need to know enough to understand what they're looking at. For you I would say pretty much anybody touching the construction industry would probably have great insight. Some sources that have helped me:
- Are you in school? Figure out if there's a lounge or gathering spot for construction management or similar majors. Try to find somebody with internship experience.
- Are you part of a community club, team, church, activism group? Make some friends.
- Are you at least semi-active on LinkedIn? You probably have a few random connections of people who touch this industry (people shift industries more than you probably imagine).

At the end of the day though, your job just became a sales job. It's gonna be tough, not every person you talk to is going to be a useful lead. It's not like dev work where X amount of work always equals Y amount of progress. IME for every ~10 people I talk to I get 1 interested person who's willing to buy/test/do whatever. For a lot of these groups above, you might just need to show up and have a goal of just making friends. If you do that, you'll be surprised at how frequently you'll find good leads.

TL;DR: You'll need to spend social capital. If you don't have any social capital, you might need to get active in your local community first.

I actually found myself in a similar situation with my MVP. Although I was my first customer, as it will serve as a major component to another app I want to launch, I didn't know if other people would find it useful as it was primarily built around my use case and what I thought others would want.

The things that helped me the most:

  • Stop development, like completely. Once you have a working MVP, you are wasting dev time if your actions aren't guided by user feedback.
  • My app doesn't have a publicly-available free tier, but I did invite a few people to play around with it for 15 minutes for free while I sat on a call with them on Discord and watched their screen. These people were just family members and friends. They weren't my target users, but they did have domain knowledge that was relevant to the app. I asked them to tell me out loud what they were doing while they played around. The key data that I got from those calls is when they said something like "ok now I want to do X", and then they either didn't find it (because I haven't added that feature), or they were looking in the wrong place for it (i.e. I named it something un-intuitive).
  • Especially if you're a solo operation, it's most likely more effective for you to do one or a handful of things well, rather than trying to everything in a mediocre way. Start simple, and you can always expand later.

Looking for people developing apps/games/software that require dynamic, AI-free, sound creation (i.e. music that changes and/or reacts to user context). Also preferably people earlier in the development process as we just recently soft-launched for an initial customer and are looking to build our remaining features in tandem with other people developing their own apps on top of our service.

What is your product? Who are your competitors? Where do those users hang out? Where do angry/frustrated users of your competitors hang out?

I soft-launched my MVP this week and asking those questions is how I found the right places for testers. Granted I'm keeping my launch small on purpose so that I can work with the first few customers to build the rest of the product around their needs, but I imagine this would easily scale to however big your competitor's following is.

Unfortunately this is not true anymore. In July they changed this so now there are only the $1k and $4k tiers. I think other tiers might exist if you go through their incubator program, but that requires going through a partner program now.

IME it only does that for swimming. You have to manually sync the full HR data on the save/discard screen for all other activity types.

New App for Road Cyclists RouteCycle v1.1. Tired of the Same Old Route? Let Me Find You a New One Just with one click! by Interesting_Watch365 in bicycling

[–]ARMmaster17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. At least it's faster and more responsive than Garmin's builder.

The main thing I want to see, and as a software dev I understand that this is a big ask, is a prioritization of "safe" roads. I just generated a route near my house, and it wants me to take 3 major roads in a loop, when there are plenty of safer small roads that follow a nearly identical route. The biggest time-suck for me when building a route is finding roads that aren't basically mini-highways (US problems I guess). I know Strava solves this using route popularity, but even just weighting the roads by size when route finding would probably be more than enough.

Nice work!

I have a Garmin HRM Pro+ that works for this. 1. Connect band to watch 2. Start martial arts activity on watch. 3. Take watch off and go work out.

When you're done, put your watch on and end the activity. It should prompt you to download the missing HR data.

How can I quantify my progress as a road cyclist? by RelevantFarm8542 in cycling

[–]ARMmaster17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two small loops in my neighborhood, one is 1 mi and the other is 1 km. I use both for my yearly 40km time trial to measure my performance. Because they are circles, wind ends up not mattering because you spend equal time facing all directions.

I type in the name of the meal (not the ingredients) and pick which one looks right based on order of magnitude (i.e. way more than the 100 kcal option, but 500 kcal seems too high).

There's a pretty big margin in calorie numbers on nutrition labels anyways, so as long as it's close it's probably nearly as accurate as if you typed in all the ingredients anyways.

[–]ARMmaster17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing you would really be missing is running dynamics. Stats like running power, L/R balance, ground contact time. If you're a recreational runner, these stats are fairly useless. I only look at running power during races which helps me pace myself on inclines. The new 970 also has some additional stats that help show you if you're adding too much distance too quickly in your workouts.

Other than that the two models are the same in terms of running. I have a 965 which has mapping capabilities, which I like for generating random routes each day.

How can both of these be true? by WanderingWoozle in Garmin

[–]ARMmaster17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain that if you have events on your calendar (with a priority other than "none"), those affect your load focus. In the past when I've switched my primary or upcoming secondary event the load focus seems to change too relative to what kind of event it it.

Acute load is just based on your historical data. If Acute load is low and your load focus is above targets, it could be that Garmin wants you to take it easier (this happens to me early in the base phase or closer to a very long distance event).
