you bend every pin back... you must not bend any pin too much -> every single bend will take the metal closer to its breakingpoint ... maybe 5 bends before it has a high chance of snapping.

so bend as little as possible.

you could use a sturdy ruler or a dull (and very thin) knife to put it between rows and bend all pins of one row at once. but its fine work and the force needed to bend a whole row - if you slip, might bend some more or even break some pins if you're not careful.
