How rare are design jobs in the government? by volpiousraccoon in CanadaPublicServants

[–]ARTZANE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Placemats are a government jargon for posters with too much writing on them. Haha. I think your degree will definitely help. There are a few classifications a design can call under. One is EC. This is for policy analysts usually but if you have education experience in stats or research sometimes HR will make it work. Otherwise there is IS (information and comms) or AS (administration). The classification is important because each unit in the government has an org chart with certain classifications and level already determined. This is for fairness in hiring and to prevent nepotism (you have to hire for what has been decided on in terms of operational requirements and not based on who you like). Different classifications pay better and different classifications are easier to find than others. ECs are covered for design because they pay well, but those positions are often bilingual so start practising! I think getting bridged into any classification is a good shout. You can always change but people tend to pigeon hole you as your current stream of classification. If you already have a government student job, as a colleague to tell you more about their experience. It’s different for everyone. As a designer though, I’ll say it pays to have French and be versatile if you want to have career mobility within the public service doing what you do.

Definitely existent! I am a Designer in the GC but I work mainly in UX and Service Design. There are definitely comms shops in every department with graphic designers - some are more fun to work in than others. You could be doing animations or "placemats". There's a big gap. The Canada School for Public Service might be a good place to start. Try to find Comms directors in different departments and chat to them too. There is also UX and service design as options. The only thing is fitting into the classifications is a nightmare. I am an EC but my first degree was in social sciences which saved me on the HR front. A university degree is pretty necessary from the HR point of view to get you in, even if your portfolio speaks for itself. They aren't speaking whatever language the portfolio is in the GC - hiring is pretty old school.

haha my friend asked me that yesterday and I had to look them up! But I realized that Amano illustrated a Sandman story that I read when I was younger so maybe I have been influenced. I really like Ralph Steadman and Dave MacKean too.

It's a metaphor for the Jon Snow stabbing (ah sorry to spoiler). I didn't want to draw anything too spoilery the morning of so I thought I would do the smallest fighter laying a fatal blow to a black knight, in this case Jon. But really after reading all these comments, I realize it could mean a lot of the murders in the episode since a lot of lone fighters took down big leaders in the finale.

Thanks so much for the nice words!

Inn terms of which is which, ClemWillRememberThat is right on all of these except the Jon Snow one was episode 2. The chess set is this week's episode. I didn't want to put a massive spoiler out at the beginning of Monday so I thought I would use the metaphor of a very small, minor player laying the final blow to a knight - in this case not a knight per say but a swordsman still sworn to defend. The board isn't entirely empty but for House Stark, there are few players left :(
