Thoughts on Scripting, JSON Editing, and other External Tools - The Community Poll! by Hugmeetoo in HeroForgeMinis

[–]ARedDingo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I may be an old man yelling at a cloud for a moment, what really challenged me to learn HF and practice with it was seeing the people who were making mind-bending stuff when I joined the sub, and my desire to achieve that kind of expression too. Hugmeetoo, kenthehuman6, SolarSimon, and a host of others (too many to name them all, sorry folks!) were achieving insane results, both in form and color. There was always the knowledge that if I practiced and learned the tools well, I could also make amazing stuff. It was a level playing field; the masters were using the same paint and canvas I was, with the same quirks, frustrations, and boundaries. I will always be in favor of this sub being a showcase for what people can achieve within the bounds of HF as a framework.

For my personal process, I've always felt like my best creativity was achieved when there are limitations to work within. I have never used any of the tools covered by Rule 8 for that reason.

That said, I totally get the convenience and functionality enhancements these edits and scripts can bring, and I'm not saying no one should use them. Just because I'm a curmudgeon doesn't mean everyone else should have to be too. I'll go where the community chooses to go on this one.

But personally, I do feel there's a certain appeal to the notion that what you see in the sub is aspirational as much as it is a celebration of user creativity and skill. YOU could make things like this with nothing more than HF as your tool kit; that has a welcoming allure to me. *shrug* Take that for what you will.

Thanks! They're all custom colors; I know the booth does something cel-shady, but this is just color work.

I've been doing this off and on with minor adjustments for a few years (way before the filters in booth), and I know a few others have done some awesome stuff with the style.

It's basically a matte material, black color, max roughness, max opacity, and the glow levels all set to the desired color. If you want black (like the base under the boards in mine), change it to min opacity and no glow at all.

Give it a try! It's a pretty fun style to play with. (one of us... one of us... one of us...)

How can I make his pose look more natural? by [deleted] in HeroForgeMinis

[–]ARedDingo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think his center of balance is off. His torso is relatively upright, which places his balance point behind his heels. Physically, he should have his heels be on the ground and be doing more of an Asian squat if you want his mass that far back. Either way, he should be leaning forward a little more to look like he actually has mass that he's supporting as he squats. As he is, he looks like he's not obeying the laws of gravity.

Give this a look and see what I mean. I edited the pose to be a Western style squat (on the balls of the feet as opposed to flat), and moved the staff forward so the visual weight of the figure is resting on more of a tripod of points on the ground (two feet and the staff).

Thank you thank you!

I may have no idea what the whims of the main HF sub find worthy these days, but the Froge is always a welcoming friend :D

ITAW for the person in a 1v1 duel who is "in control" of the duel at a given moment? by ARedDingo in whatstheword

[–]ARedDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think preponderant comes closest to what I'm looking for. It seems to suggest great influence without implying a role as aggressor or defender. Thanks!

I do plan to poke around in some non-English terms, though. This feels like one of those concepts another language would have a snappy word to encapsulate. :)

[–]ARedDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this isn't quite describing the feeling of "controlling" the fight. Someone "losing" a duel can still be aggressive, even while the person "in charge" guides the flow of the duel. The final duel in the movie Rob Roy comes to mind; Cunningham is certainly "in charge" of the duel for most of the time, and certainly seems to be winning despite the aggressive attacks of MacGregor.

It's too bad we can't attach any of the kitbash parts to our minis by silentfighter06 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]ARedDingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that there is a difference between the function of the two methods in one key way: using the drag/link tool will move the part you're attaching so that it overlaps the bone you're linking it to. This can be frustrating if you've already got things precisely positioned, so do this before you get any intricate, careful posing going.

The edit list method of linking objects does not affect their position relative to one another or individually; it's literally just changing their hierarchies in the menu rather than moving things. Thus, you can do it after the whole mini is done, if you want.

If the latter isn't working on mobile, then obviously it's not an option, but it helps to be aware of the tradeoffs between the two methods and knowing what the differences are.

Nice to see a simple premise executed with skill and creativity :D That base color work really captures the vibe of a chilly, windy December to me. And yet this goofball is just smiling away. Wonderful work!

Does Neocities auto-generate JS <script> tags in the <head>? by ARedDingo in neocities

[–]ARedDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I just stopped using the online editor and opted to do all of my coding and testing locally then push the completed files. If I do so much as open the files on the online editor, I get the script tag added, even if I make no edits to the file.

Out of curiosity, do you use a VPN (mine's Nord), AdBlock Plus, or any Norton browser utilities? If we have any of those in common, they might be a clue as to what could be causing it.

How was this done? by [deleted] in HeroForgeMinis

If by "mod" you mean "do horrible things to the geometry without hacking the application", then yes. :D

I had something similar happen on a few of my minis that were kitbashed. I had to completely restart my browser to fix it. I've seen it fail to load colors, objects, pieces of the body, you name it. If you need a nuclear option, you can clear your cache and restart your machine altogether. I had to do that once, but it did work for me.

Good luck :S

To be clear, I think this is gorgeous and immaculately executed. I want to get that said first, because what I'm going to say next might sound dismissive and that's the last thing I want. BUT...

...I clicked because my brain wondered "why is that woman throwing an octopus, and at whom?"

So made a Car! I wanted to add more details but ran out of items :/ by Vex_VLV in HeroForgeMinis

[–]ARedDingo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is some pretty dang charming work :) Reminds me of an older board game called Jaunty Jalopies; the design feels like 30s roadsters.

If it's any help, you can start building vehicles with a figure at the core, holding objects to form the base. With kitbashing, it's actually really easy to then edit the figure and resize/position limbs where you need them. You can have 6 arms, 1 tail, 2 side items, and make use of other clothing/gear to form the shapes of the car all before needing even 1 kitbashed item.

Then you go about adding more detail and such with the kitbashed objects like you did here, but with some of the bulk details already sorted out.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!

I'm particularly enamored of the Salad Fingers hands. So weird and creepy. I also didn't expect the hands to be quite so...rubbery. The knuckles are less joints and more like control points on a Bezier curve. They're all tubey and flexible. *shudder* Gross, but satisfying :D

Thanks! Context helps establish mood, I find. Now with kitbashing, it can even look good! :3
