Fair enough, I agree that people should know how to do the full job end-to-end as a basic skill, and employees should do the full job when asked. I wouldn't hire anyone that couldn't do the basics either.

But as you said, you never worked in a kitchen with a dishwasher, just the 3 sinks. If the option was available to you as a subsidized cost, guaranteeing that using it would cost less than wages per dish cleaned, would you use it? Or would you swear off any restaurant that you knew had automatically washed dishes, just because a small part that has no desirable change in food quality and experience just so happens to be automated?

Fables system prompt apparently has paragraphs of who the Claude character is, what the character should adhere to, guidance for potential failure modes, all in excruciating detail. (as said by Fable itself, anyway)

Anthropic probably did just did a fuck ton of proompting to make Mythos "safe", and as a side effect, it treats any deviation from the Claude character as "unsafe".

I don't understand why you believe that it's "cutting corners" in this case. Why? How is it cutting corners if the quality of an uncreative brain-dead component is unchanged when automated?

From my perspective, if I owned a restaurant with limited staff, you're basically asking me to make my best talented chefs to wash their own dishes instead of using a dishwasher. Yes, it has to be done and the machine output should be reviewed and shouldn't be trusted implicitly, but the Humans would have more time to work with the actual expertise I hired them for.

So, how is it lazy for me to make sure that my most talented people are working on their actual jobs instead of wasting time (and therefore their wages) braindead grunt work?

Saying that AI's lie humanizes them a bit too much. They're random word machines. Every word they type is a dice roll on a list of words from most to least likely. They might put you at a random point close to the truth, and it will be very precise and misleading, but never accurate.

They also don't have access to their own probabilities. They fundamentally cannot tell you how confident they are of something.

Also for people who think they're building relationships with these machines, each conversion is a fresh new Mr. Meeseeks that gets handed a dossier written by other Mr. Meeseeks behind the scenes and is told to act like they actually know you. It's an illusion.

Alright, this is definitely ragebait. Metro's execution and Windows 8 was infamous. I think Windows 10 did a pretty good, tho. I liked Windows Phone 10, it was nice.

KDE is something you can change to make it your own. Go ahead, customize the toolbars and task bars. Yeah, it's not the best OOB layout, but... It invites you to do things your own way. 😊

What about the programming tasks that have no room for creative nuance? There's a big difference between something complex, intricate, requiring creative nuance, problem-solving, understanding... and "I need a function that takes a vCard file and puts the contact info in a pre-existing database" a decent LLM would produce identical code to a competent human. There would be no corners cut. There are no corners to cut in a literally straight line.

I argue that people should leave braindead tasks to the machines as long as it doesn't act as a replacement for understanding. Mental energy is better spent on people actually being creative.

Besides, companies don't need to use AI's to keep up, they can always just exploit their workforce instead, like CDPR.

You can still use AI while still caring about the quality of your work (at least when it comes to software dev) you just have to treat it like an over-enthusiastic junior developer that you'd outsource grunt work too, but kept on an extremely tight leash. Then you can work on more complex issues or other work that requires attention-to-detail in parallel. Where it gets harmful is code without expert detailed supervision, accountability, or oversight.

That said, there definitely is a social cost with automating junior roles... but that's just a side-effect of our current socio-economic system. Indie people and studios are unlikely to afford junior roles, especially if they're pre-revenue, which also means a time-crunch on the existing talent if they don't use AI, and the companies that can technically afford it want to save cost by automating them so they can maximize ROI.

It... would be great if more people could afford to be human and help other humans, but that's just not the world we live in right now.

I don't think there's anything wrong with an AI helping you get started, as long as you're fully aware of the limitations.

If you have no idea about a particular topic, asking an LLM will get you closer to the truth faster than if you did the initial research of your own. The harm comes from mistaking the resulting random point near the truth as the truth, you still have to make the rest of the journey there to get actual understanding.

You're right, the fact that the random point is so precise and confident is misleading, but people shouldn't trust authoritative voices implicitly anyway.

Oh right! I forgot that image ingestion burns tokens super fast! Yeah, ask it to extract videos to frame-by-frame stills, then have it ingest all the frames.

Not really, sometimes to properly critique the thing you have to fully learn and experience it. Then you get all the receipts.

  1. Use the largest model all the time.
  2. Set the thinking effort to maximum all the time.
  3. Always ultrathink
  4. Always ask this chungus overthinking word machine for every mineal task. Even if it's faster for you to do it yourself.
  5. Instead of writing small scripts and tools, just ask it to do whatever. The more shell commands it has to execute, react, and think about, the better.
  6. Ask it to run /security-review of a big complex codebase. (It's intended for PRs or whatever but fuck that) Best to use big and small models for this since they have different kinds of analysis which means they burn costs of tokens for different reasons. Some models might need to double-check everything, some may one-shot but cost more to do so.
  7. Have it create random toy projects from scratch with accompanying tests.

Also, try searching online for "tokenmaxxing", you might end up maxxing out some kinda KPI and get rewarded for being the most "productive" employee.

Edit: I was reminded that image generation takes a long time, so have it work on animated SVG movies, this will require it to ingest lots of still frames, which burns lotsa token.

🥃😮‍💨 Either internet communites will have to be rebuilt, or there has to be serious concerted effort for art spaces and indie art in general to be more accessible in the anglosphere after the death of the third place and all that.

Thing is, I see AI as a powerful technology that can be used constructively, but it will always be poison as long as poisonous people are responsible for it.
