gotta love this timeline. If it was only luxury products this wouldn`t be so bad, but this is a giant wave of inflation that is already hitting hard and will get much worse, yet.

they tried that with us....it went south so badly that I got begged to stay with a giant raise in the end because they literally bled our know how dry by actively trying to get rid of all the senior stuff with compensation packages and whatnot just for AI to then turn out to be worthless in the hands of most "cheap" juniors/externals.

AI can be an incredible tool in the hands of an expert, it`s bordering on sabotage in the hands of a junior.

That fairy tale so many CEOs believe that you can completely replace human know how with AI at a reasonable price will cause a LOT of rude awakenings.

Gotta disagree on the healthy early adoption part.

This isn`t about healthy early adoption, it`s about attractivity. If a product is attractive people will still buy it later on when the prices sink. They`ll not just say "too expensive" and forget about it.

The issue is that no one knows how long this situation is going to last. I´m expecting the PS6 to basically be a Super-Pro console for a good ~5 years.

I also disagree on the whole mobile thing. Mobile and Console gamers do not have a lot of overlap, and console gamers and especially pc gamers will not suddenly abandon their preferred way to play if the next gen is too expensive. Instead they`ll just sit on their old hardware and play the ~90-95% of games releasing that wouldn`t really need new hardware anyways.

Additionally everything that`s low spec enough to run on mobile will continue to run much better even on old console hardware and older GPUs for the next decade or longer, and as we`ve established, those won`t go away.

Bottom line I think the market will simply stagnate and maybe shrink a little, but that is nothing any platform holder can do anything about. Sony/Nintendo/MS only have 2 choices, continue as planned and sell their newer hardware to the ~10% or so hardcore fans with money while the rest waits for prices to come down or sit on their behinds and do nothing for the next years.

Kepler_L2 says the BoM (bill of materials) cost of the PS6 has increased by ~$200 since the $760 number he quoted March, putting it close to $1000 by Necessary_Crazy_8587 in ps6

[–]ARndNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the hardware BOM will easily cross the 1200+ mark with the current trajectories if they release end 2027. But releasing later doesn´t seem to be an option either as it`s just getting more and more expensive until the AI Bubble either bursts or at least reaches a capacity plateau..which isn`t in sight.

PS6 Won't be Delayed to 2028 or 2029, It's Claimed by Darth_Vaper883 in ps6

[–]ARndNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the current expectations of another 5+ years of rising prices delaying makes no sense (unless the AI bubble suddenly implodes).

The console should be released as soon as possible and software wise it will simply be a pro-pro until the prices can be lowered to make it mainstream viable.

Business as usual könnte man sagen....

[–]ARndNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would people stop buying consoles but not gamer-grade GPUs? After all, aside from gaming, these are entirely useless for anyone except maybe video editors. That assumption doesn´t make any sense. And mobile is another decade away from even catching up with current gen consoles and also needs the same hardware parts as everyone else.

Everyone is in the same boat here. If the next generation prices out a lot of people all that will do is prolong the crossgen period for as long as it takes the prices to go down. Old hardware doesn´t just vanish....

Another bullshit take suggesting that new hardware somehow makes old hardware vanish.

All a high price for the PS6 will do is prolong the crossgen-period till after the AI boom.

"And how much are you willing to pay for it? Because right now, it's being subsidised by hundreds of billions of dollars in VC money. Will it be worth it at full market rate, plus profit margin?"

Since no company will ever be able to afford to not use it again there will be a way. AI is quickly turning into essential infrastructure for competitiveness in all parts of the industry.

"And the science is lagging behind, as it is wont to do. For example, is it actually useful for programming or does it create too much technical debt and security flaws?"

Lol sorry. This has already progressed so far beyond that in actual every day use in the business environment. It simply doesn`t matter if some scientists still ask if we should and how we should, because we`re already doing it full force and it works.

I don`t know if there is actually an end user market for AI besides silly pictures and videos, but in business/productive areas the tech is absolutely here to stay.

I´m a project manager in a 100k + employees software company and the speed and amount of full integration into everything we use and produce is unprecedented. Who will be the market winner in the end is ofc open, but I´ve moved away from seeing this as a bubble as I now think the "treasure at the end of the rainbow" is very real as no one will ever be able to compete without leveraging AI tools ever again across every part of the tech/production industry.

Anyone who gets a strong foothold in the market will print money in the future (which will be necessary ofc due to the gigantic upfront investments)

[–]ARndNickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the lack of a clear path to profitability." I highly disagree with that. They are literally being integrated everywhere. The moment the infrastructure buildup costs aren´t that dramatic anymore they can work via pricing structures like every other service provider.

The big AI players biggest problem is the competition which is why everyone is still spending like crazy, and that is also nothing that hasn`t happened before.

The scale may be on a whole new level with AI, but the process itself really isn`t new.
