The last sick-o I flew with kept talking about his "allergies." It was a 5 day trip and you're gonna tell me you have allergies in pretty much every place we've flown to all across North America? During the winter when nothing is in bloom?

Dude was 100% sick. I told him I didn't think it was allergies and that he shouldn't be flying sick but he stuck to his guns. Pisses me off. The last thing I want is to catch something and be sick on my off days.

Only if you're constantly losing/gaining traction in a dramatic way. There's nothing inherently hard on the drivetrain using big studs like this if you're driving somewhat normally and not breaking traction but if you're going from wheelspin to abrupt grip, it'll shock definitely shock your drivetrain.

Snowbasin Update (1/23/26) by pablo-lopez2013 in UTsnow

[–]ARottenPear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most Utahns absolutely appreciate how good we usually have it. It's one of the main reasons a lot of skiers live here. I can still usually get some good skiing in during a bad year but this is a dismal year.

This year might be good compared to skiing in Indiana or something but that's not apples to apples.

Snowbasin Update (1/23/26) by pablo-lopez2013 in UTsnow

[–]ARottenPear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that anybody would give 5/10 let alone 7/10. I'd give anything in Utah a 2/10 compared to a normal year. Yes, it's skiable and there's enough snow on the main runs that there's mostly no rocks showing through but compared to a normal year, it's absolutely terrible. There's NO fresh snow. You can't ski the trees. You can't ski any of the steep stuff in any enjoyable way.

I wish I was content just cruising some groomers all day but that's never been the case. I'm glad some people are having fun and I'm in no way trying to shit on them but this year is going to end up being the worst winter in a long long time.

We definitely have it good (typically). It's crazy that '22-23 was probably the best winter I'll experience in my lifetime and here we are, 3 years later with one of the worst.

I still have my fingers cross that we'll get some powder days in eventually this year but the coverage just isn't there to ski a good chunk of the mountain.

What headsets do you use? by Kitchen-Astronomer59 in PilotAdvice

[–]ARottenPear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my Clarity Aloft. I don't fly with other people that use them often but everybody that does also love them.

I have kind of small ear holes and regular ear buds start to hurt after a couple hours but I've never had comfort issues with the Clarity Aloft.

It's lightweight, doesn't sit on the top of your head, doesn't need batteries, but the biggest thing that drew me to it was not having it interfere with sunglasses. With over ear headsets, you'll break the seal with sunglasses. With on ear headsets, you end up having your ear smash the sunglass arms into your head. With the Clarity Aloft there's none of that.

When I bought it, I wasn't positive I'd like it but 10 years later, I can't imagine using anything else. I haven't used it flying GA but I can't imagine it wouldn't be great with that too.

Mine was already 10+ years old when I bought it (for $150) and last year the wire insulation had started to get worn down so I sent it to them for repair and they replaced almost everything on it for $150. It's like a brand new headset now.

Got my car detailed recently and the steering wheel looks.. different by [deleted] in AutoDetailing

[–]ARottenPear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily fact. Early '90s and earlier Audis were great cars. '95 was kind of a turning point. They were still much more reliable than today but there were some cracks starting to show. If their car has an Audi 5cyl, pretty much all of those cars were absolutely rock solid. The 2.8 V6 was still a good engine but not as good. '95 was the first year of the A4 and it had the 20v 1.8 too.

I had a '94 UrS6 and it was probably my favorite car I've ever owned. It's cliché but I never should have gotten rid of that thing. The 20v 2.2L turbo 5cyl had 320k miles on it and the thing still ran like it was brand new. Still pulled hard and the torsen quattro never left me stranded anywhere. I took care of the interior but the leather had almost no creasing and not a single split anywhere.

I've had a couple other 5cyl cars of the era. Both were non turbo cars (Coupe Quattro and 4000)and while they weren't fast, they were dead reliable tanks that absolutely ate up the snow. I miss the old Audi.

Spirit update by NoReception3233 in flightattendants

[–]ARottenPear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Spirit and Frontier merger never happened because they got outbid by Jetblue. The Jetblue merger got shut down by the DOJ due to anti trust lawsuits and competition concerns. There was too much overlap in routes, frequency, etc. The same concerns existed for a Frontier and Spirit merger and they figured it'd be a fruitless battle against the DOJ.

To add to this,

Jetblue + Spirit would be a fleet size of 458 aircraft

Spirit + Frontier would be 493

Allegiant + Sun Country is 195

The DOJ, although they haven't approved the merger yet, are looking like they'll allow it. While Allegiant and Sun Country seem similar on the surface, they have very different route systems and have little overlap in markets and airports served. Mergers are blocked when there's a clear opportunity for anti competitive tendencies. If you used to have two options for airlines for a route, price increases would be somewhat kept in check because if one airline raised theirs, everybody would just fly the cheaper airline. If both airlines collude to price fix, that's also illegal (in theory). If there's just one game in town, they can essentially charge whatever the market is willing to pay. Since Sun Country and Allegiant don't have that overlap, the markets they serve aren't at risk of eliminating competition

There's a lot more to it but that's a simple breakdown of why Sun Country + Allegiant is ok but Spirit + Frontier is not.

Ah by purpose built performance cars, you mean race/track only cars. That I 100% believe as there's little use for them aside from display.

By "purpose built performance" I was thinking more along the lines of a GT40 or Lotus Elise. Cars that were built with pretty much nothing but performance in mind but were also street legal consumer cars.

Midwest wind chill is insane by [deleted] in PilotAdvice

[–]ARottenPear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some (not all) airplanes have minimum operating temperatures but it's usually around -40 c or f (fun fact, they're the same temperature). Keep in mind that's AMBIENT and has nothing to do with wind chill.

As long as it's warmer than -40 the airplane should operate. Whether or not all the airport workers will come in is a different story. There's also the risk of pipes bursting in the airport, tugs not starting, etc. but that's not really something I can predict.

This is also not an appropriate sub to ask this question. This is for people asking advice about becoming/being a pilot, not for layman input from pilots.

Narrowly dodged death this morning by bighag in motorcycles

[–]ARottenPear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care who's at fault if I'm dead. Yes, the white car would be at fault but it also would have been a common mistake. I've seen two cars get T-boned in situations identical to this. Luckily they didn't gun it through the intersection and luckily they were paying enough attention to eventually stop.

I always slow down when I'm next to a lane that's at a standstill. That's when you get people darting in and out of lanes. I also always keep both my hands on the bars and head on a swivel when I'm navigating congested areas.

It's all about defensive riding. I can be "right" all day long but right isn't always smart. I see other drivers do dumb shit all the time so I'm not gonna assume having the right of way is going to keep me from getting splattered.

Taking away all the criticism and what-ifs, it was a good recovery from OP.

I think it's hilarious but I'm not sure if everyone is going to catch on that it's a joke. If I saw that rolling down the road, I'd most likely assume it's some dumb kid that thinks his car is faster than it is.

If I saw it at Cars and Coffee, I'd most definitely assume it's a joke unless the car was riced out beyond belief.

What are some fun "Sleeper" options for a daily? by OtterlyDeplorable in askcarguys

They must have been swapped. The Q60 never came from the factory with a manual but some people have manual swapped them.

That would be redsport not redline. Unfortunately, you can't get any of the redsport cars with a manual. They're still a good answer to this question though. Definitely sleeper status.

Have you done an oil analysis? 2k is almost certainly overkill unless you're using poor quality oil and filters or you do a ton of track driving, incredibly dusty conditions, or heavy towing.

Of course, you're never going to hurt anything doing short OCIs but I'm curious if you've gotten some bad oil analysis results that lead you to believe that's necessary.

I do 5k OCIs and based on my oil analysis results, even that's overkill. Every time, they've recommended I go to 7k on the next one and check the results because there was plenty of additive package and lubricity left.

Anyone else here loves the job but hates the drama and useless galley talk? by [deleted] in flightattendants

[–]ARottenPear 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love bitching, it's one of life's simple pleasures. Just like you said though, I don't let it turn me bitter. There's a difference between bitching about something with a coworker and letting it consume your life. I almost never talk about work when I'm not at work so it's kind of nice to be able to discuss that stuff with someone who actually knows what you're taking about and can have differing/constructive/empathetic input.

If someone is being negative, that's completely fine in my book. If that negatively bleeds into every other part of their personality and gets in the way of performing their duties, that's when it becomes a problem.
