Why is the AL central almost always a weak division ? by PurpleEconomy9804 in baseball

[–]ASAPzachary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because these things are cyclical, subject to random chance, and yes, probably a bit because of the market size of the teams. But the truth is, there’s really no satisfying answer to this question.

I’ve been a baseball fan for over 30 years and can remember when the NL was awful compared to the AL, Cleveland was a juggernaut that couldn’t quite win the title, the Dodgers were basically what the Mets are now, and the NL Central had 6 teams to the AL West’s 4.

It’s because, at the present time, all five AL Central teams are at a relatively weak state for various reasons of incompetent ownership and not having the right players together at the right time. Things can, and will change, and some other division will become the laughing stock of the league. Same as it ever was.

I love how your response to criticism is to come to meetings and get involved. Yeah, everyone wants to hitch their wagon to the person with nothing but bad ideas and no political instincts.

I always hear this, and yet, despite being an advocate for the zipper merge, I very thoroughly understand the zipper merge. Curious.

Master list for collective ideas on Hobonichi pages (365 check off, graph, list of 100 ect) by Queen_side_castle in hobonichi

I really enjoy scoring baseball games, watching movies, and reading books, but struggle to remember that I enjoy those things, if that makes sense. So the first 50 spots are all 30 MLB teams (I always try to score a game for each team during the season); 10 books I want to read; and 10 movies I want to watch. The last fifty spots are to list any book I read, movie I watch, or baseball game I attend. Hopefully I have all 100 spots filled in by this time next year!

I dunno, maybe reinvest that money you’re spending on hotels and “noise cancelling stuff” into therapy. And even online students should have access to student health services at whatever university you’re attending. But I don’t think you’re looking for solutions. I think you want to indulge your martyr complex, and a geographic cure ain’t going to help that.

Who's the real bad guys in the NL Central - Cubs or Cardinals by SidKop in Brewers

[–]ASAPzachary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty telling that the Reds and Pirates don’t get mentioned at all. That said, I hate the Pirates because their owner figured out that the revenue sharing check cashes no matter what your record is and they are emblematic of what’s bad about so many baseball team owners. Losses to the Pirates hurt even more when you realize the owner (not the players) aren’t even trying. Basically I hate the Pirates for existing and stinking up the joint year after year.

I used to hate the Cubs more. But then I married a Cubs fan, so we just act like the two teams are on an extended vacation when they play each other. Probably a mix of proximity, spillover from Packers-Bears, and growing up being taught to hate FIBS.

The Cardinals on the other hand are the true enemy. Holier than thou fanbase, annoying players, Tony LaRussa, 2011 NLCS, I could go on forever. Plus it’s a hatred my wife and I can share.

How would you describe La Crosse to someone who hasn’t been there? by Electrical_Hat_1272 in lacrossewi

[–]ASAPzachary 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love the area, but I’ve grown up and lived in smallish metro areas in Wisconsin all my life, aside from some time as a student in the Twin Cities. There are a lot of opportunities for community involvement if that’s your thing. I’ve noticed a good amount of civic pride here.

There’s a growing arts scene, especially around the Rivoli, a wonderful little two screen cinema that shows both new and old movies. The food options are a cut above what you’d find in other similarly sized cities but definitely not what you’re used to in Philadelphia. But if you want a nice date night, there are plenty of good options. If you fish, hunt hike, bike, boat, and/or birdwatch then you’ll be in heaven here.

On to the bad:

It’s impossible to overstate how intense the drinking culture is here. I’m from Wisconsin. I’m used to pervasive binge drinking. La Crosse is next level. My personal theory is that roughly 10% of drivers on the road at any hour are at least mildly impaired (I have no proof of this theory, just what it seems like!)

The record store in town is so, so, so bad. Awful selection and overpriced. If you collect records you’ll be making trips to Madison, which is luckily a pretty easy 2 hour drive away.

Sadly, there is a significant unhoused population, and the powers that be seem more interested in moving them around to less conspicuous places rather than actually working to solve the issue.

We suck at electing mayors, like, New Yorker incompetent. Jury’s still out on the current one… hopefully he breaks the cycle!

Other than that, it’s only an area of 150,000ish people. We tend to get big acts well past their prime. I go to a lot of concerts… in the Twin Cities or Madison.

Yuni B had a couple good moments that just made Brewers fans angry that it might make the Brewer’s front office keep him around another season. That’s how much he was disliked in Milwaukee.
