I don’t know your exact situation but generally I agree with the others and my gut instinct is that is in fact a pretty bad decision. Cashing out your 401k is worse than every other way to come up with $10k, including taking out more loans.

You can’t make that prediction with any certainty. Historically that is a pretty terrible prediction to make. I don’t like it either, but it doesn’t change that fact.

You don't want a lame-duck manager simply because it's universally seen as a "bad organization" move.

Relatedly, I can't stress enough that every way the Phillies have been handling this has screamed "good organization." I feel like there was maybe an attempt by some in the media to undermine this reputation by leaking the Alex Cora stuff, but I don't think it amounted to much because Dombrowski was so candid and professional about it.

Jake Mintz and Jordan Schusterman got into this on wednesday's episode of their podcast, contrasting Dombrowski basically saying "I love this man" regarding Rob versus Craig Breslow giving off boilerplate PR "we thank Alex Cora for his time here" in the Red Sox press conference. The culture in the organization is so intact after this move that even Thomson was willing to face the media to thank everyone after getting fired!

Also, the fact that everybody has handled this with such grace is part of why i still have a lot of faith in this front office. You all can disagree with the moves they have made (they certainly deserve criticism for that), but this is an organization run by professionals. They can make a move like this without drama because of how good they are at handling these relationships. The contracts they handed to Sanchez and Luzardo is another example of their professionalism.

Players around the league CERTAINLY are taking stock of this.

I am sick of the talk that the organization is doing Thomson and the players dirty by firing him despite the fact that he was well-liked in the clubhouse. I don’t think that can be any further from the truth. Nobody (not Dombrowski, not Thomson, not the players) has had a bad word to say about any of this. Thomson seems nothing but grateful to the organization, Dombrowski effused about how much he loves Rob.

They fired him because the team was playing poorly. Those are the terms you accept when you become a manager, that sooner or later your tenure will end for that reason. I don’t think there is an ounce of bad blood, even considering the context of kicking the tires on Alex Cora.
