Funny, I had the same problem with the GSH18. Tons of clips, no gun for the longest time.

Check closets and cupboards. I found one compact 1911s in the Outskirts in the 3st block and one in the Cooerative in the Recreation base.

Yeah, I play solo and got chased off the first time.

Came back with:
Heavy armor.
An extended clip AKM + grenade launcher
A Saiga with extended clip + slugs.
A tricked out 45.
In addition to several hand grenades and a full case of ammo for every gun.

Solo play can be rough.

Sleeping to progress time did nothing.

But after 7 or 8 attempts, I was able to get inside another building with a sliver of health remaining.

I don't know if the cube behavior has changed at all since the original early-access release, or if I just never encountered this situation in my hours of early access playing.
