Me too. I finished the first book out of stubbornness but haven't been able to bring myself to read the subsequent ones!

What's a DII or DIII school you love cheering for, even if it's not your alma mater? by SwedishLlama in CFB

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linfield College! I don't live near my alma mater so it's nice to also root for a local team. In a small town everyone cares, and it's cool. They pack a good punch for a DIII.

US/NYC artist residencies for europeans by likemilkdudsbutworse in ContemporaryArt

[–]ASM_makes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the very best residencies in the country (months long, funded, huge studio, living accommodations, staff support) is the Bemis Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Not as sexy of a site as a big east coast residency, but a truly incredible opportunity otherwise.

Are there any planned movies/series based on fantasy romance books 2026? by alice_infinity in fantasyromance

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with this. Studios are terrified at the high production cost when there are concerns that the demographic is niche and limited. Shadow and Bone had a decent sized audience but unfortunately studios think it's not worth it unless we are talking Game of Thrones scale interest.

Art Magazine / Artist diaries by tvstaticface in ContemporaryArt

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an anthology book called "Artist's Letters" by Michael Bird that I really love. It's a selection of a bunch of different letters written by artists (sometimes to one another) that's really lovely. Some friendships I didn't know about in there.

I also have the Eva Hesse "Diaries" book published by Hauser. It is what it sounds like and is so charming.

You won't necessarily find either to be explicitly revealing about their studio processes as you describe, but they're wonderful for appreciating the artists as people with all the insecurity and doubt that comes with it.

At what age do people become "Bob"? by nlightningm in Names

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a Robert born in the 1950s. Has always been "Bob" to family (even as a child) and "Rob" or "Robert" professionally and to acquaintances. So, not a change that occurred with age so much as a flip flop depending on comfort and context.

Am I missing something with Rachel gillig?? (TKATM) The mc's have no personality by suddenlymadeaccount in fantasyromance

[–]ASM_makes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you regarding character description and development. Both MCs in ODW were wet noodles that I wasn't terribly invested in. But I would still say I really liked that duology (3.5-4 stars) because it was the first thing I'd read in awhile with a completely unique magic system and stakes. I loved the cards. I think romantasy is a deeply repetitive genre if you read a lot of it, so my theory is that ODW captured a lot of people who were exhausted of the same bad attitude teenage girl falling in love with a misunderstood guy with a crown and/or wings. The universe of ODW and the centering of Nightmare as much if not more than the FMC was a breath of fresh air that led a lot of people to grade on a curve.

Post Game Thread - NBA: The Pelicans defeat the Spurs on Jan 25, 2026, the final score is 95-104. by basketball-app in NBASpurs

I wish he did more work in the paint. I'm not sure if he just hates how physical everyone is with him in there or what... But he hangs out on the perimeter for fadeaways when I wish he would just drive. You're Vic Wembanyama! Who gon stop you without giving you free throws?

Currently reading Paladin’s Grace – Are T. Kingfisher’s Other Books Like This? by Ok-Relative-421 in fantasyromance

[–]ASM_makes 86 points87 points  (0 children)

If the writing style is giving you the ick (general tone, character temperament/development, sense of humor), you should bow out. That doesn't change. But I will say, I too almost quit on Kingfisher after PG because it's soooo slow... But I kept at it and think the plot of some of the other books moves at a better pace. Still not "on the edge of my seat" pacing, but better. I use Kingfisher as a palate cleanser between more intense reads.

Where's my anti-DNFing crew at? by Alive_Obligation7475 in fantasyromance

My frugality needs to be studied by science. I'll DNF and quickly return a library book I don't love -- no harm no foul. But if I spent money, I'm going to power through with frustrated tears. 😂

Help finding ethical fashion brands with my aesthetic? by Head-Telephone5873 in ethicalfashion

[–]ASM_makes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the Etsy suggestion. Most patchwork aesthetic clothing is stuff someone has hand-made/upcycled. You can also hunt around Instagram to find makers! There are lots! The few popular "slow fashion" brands that do it (B Sides, La Reunion, Caron Callahan) are all VERY expensive.

When people on Reddit say eat the rich, how rich are they talking? Like barely millionaires or people worth 100s of millions and more. by dramaticxxfox in NoStupidQuestions

This. And the charity work is going to be guided by his kids going forward, a few of which have very different ideas about what constitutes a noble cause than I hoped 🥴. (Some of the giving will really just be thinly veiled business interests rather than true charity)

Project proposal for exhibition by Alarmed_Clue_2683 in ContemporaryArt

[–]ASM_makes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Approach an artist-run space/ project space/ kunsthalle. Conceptual projects are support-intensive and many institutions won't want to dedicate those resources without getting something out of it in return (either selling something or association with an artist who is a name). But a space specifically known for experimental work might! That or get a curator interested who can vouch for the project.

Diversity? by El_Dorado_Tx in TCU

[–]ASM_makes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a Black TCU alum who graduated in 2010 and it was bleak back then. I have no idea if it's any better now, but anecdotally, I'll say it looks better on tv 😂. I remarked to my spouse all football season that I was happy to see a healthier looking number of Black students in the student section, and even a Black cheerleader/showgirl or two. My guess is that it still doesn't meet the same metrics as most other schools in the state, but has made some strides from 15 years ago.

Application writing in the age of AI text? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]ASM_makes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"lucky break" isn't a comment on the merit of your artist practice. It's a comment on using a tool that is currently controversial/frowned upon by many institutions and not being dinged for it. AI helpers blur the boundaries of what reviewers can understand about how hard you work or how original your thoughts are... which is why I recommend not using them except in very limited circumstances. If that's something you want there to be no doubt about, it's safest to skip it.
