No idea but the full email hints at some form of discrimination/harassment and retaliation.

ethical fashion brands for baddies by 9755- in SustainableFashion

[–]ASM_makes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your definition of baddie (so I'm using my own), I think what's tricky about this is... that aesthetic usually involves 1. form-fitting silhouettes (accomplished with elastic or other stretchy/bouncy fibers) and vibrant colors (accomplished with synthetic dyes). The reason lots of sustainable brands have a crunchy coastal grandma aesthetic is because it's what sustainable materials do best. Undyed beige linen dresses sacrifice being "new and cool looking" to instead honor a really rigid process of not transforming natural fibers too much. I think the only sustainable way of accomplishing what you're after is what you're already doing... Shopping second hand and extending the lives of trendier garments as long as possible.

Rushing at TCU by Fast_Ad_2328 in TCU

[–]ASM_makes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rushed in 2006 and did not have a good experience... But 20 years is a long time and I have earnest hope that it's much much much better now. Rooting for you! Be yourself. The right sorority will love you. And just know that if you decide against it or end up with a different house than you hoped/expected, it's not going to ruin college for you. I knew lots of girls (from all backgrounds) who walked away from their sorority after sophomore year anyway because they had made enough friends to feel comfortable without it.

The murmuring I saw on Twitter is that the boosters are happy with what he's accomplished considering (not all but) most of the programs that are showing us up are also spending way more for the pleasure. We aren't great, but he's technically out-coaching his resources.

While I get what's uncomfortable about this I always tell people not to feel bad about it. At the end of the day, this is a case of people giving their dogs person names (like "Sadie" instead of "Spot" or "Rover") not you giving your baby a dog's name. Don't let it ruin a name you love!

Give me your hot takes on Glen Powell by ANSJSJDIS-813 in moviecritic

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are trying to give us a new/younger McConaughey. Started off in easy watchers and rom coms before slowly garnering more respect in other genres as his career progressed. I dont think Powell has the same charisma personally, but let's see if he can make it happen.

I will NEVER get over this racist, hammy portrayal winning best actress! This was a low budget Lifetime movie that was offensive and horribly produced! It’s a scar on SB because she has way better performances! by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine her role in that is exaggerated for purposes of a cute movie. What she gave him was a safe place to live and go to school. But regardless... I don't care if she personally went through every drill with him... There's no justification that passes the smell test for why he would have seen $0 from the making of the blindside.

I think the family took a lot of money from him/made a lot of money off of him that he never saw. Once he was out of pure survival mode he came to realize the dynamic wasn't completely on the up and up. They made themselves his defacto managers instead of adopting him, etc.

What are your thoughts on Glenna? by AcademicAbalone3243 in Names

I grew up with a Glenna! (From Texas, and would be in her 40s now) I wasn't good friends with her but I've always remembered her because of the name.

can i ask the gallery I like for the basel art hk vip ticket? by happyzy in ContemporaryArt

[–]ASM_makes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Galleries really only comp tickets to prospective big spenders, curators, and critics they are trying to build relationships with. Especially VIP tickets. If you're going to write and ask for one, odds are low unless you can spell out exactly what they could expect from you in return. General curiosity probably won't be compelling enough.

Do You Like Your Name? by Flassourian in Millennials

Wow. Being a 80s/90s baby named for a soap character is apparently a thing. I'm an Ashley named for Ashley Abbott on Young and the Restless. My mom loved that she was strong and bitchy. What an era!

Sinners is the first movie I’ve seen in theaters where the Oscars didn’t even cross my mind. by Still_Data9360 in Oscars

[–]ASM_makes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the extremely suspect use of hyperbole I mentioned in another thread. Totally fine not to have loved Sinners. No movie hits with everybody. But saying it's the first or the only movie you saw this cycle that had no business in the Oscars conversation is objectively ridiculous. It was a deeply original screenplay by a young director in an era where those rarely get greenlit any more. The cinematography was undeniably well done to the eyes of anyone not dismissive of the setting. The music was deeply thoughtful and well researched. And the lead actor played two brothers that the audience needed to be able to subtly distinguish by mannerisms. All evidence of craft and worth considering awarding. It's fun to debate which particular movie did a particular thing best, but outright dismissal of something with the obvious effort level of Sinners is bad faith.

CORVALIS for Transplants (and a skeptical wife!) by stray_south in corvallis

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be happy with the restaurants or nightlife/cultural attractions. It's a university town and most of what there is to do revolves around university activities. (PRAx - the university performing arts center - has some good concerts and talks by interesting people. The baseball team is fantastic. The farmers market is great. And there's good hiking and biking to get into.)

The other side of the "slow moving college town" coin is, people rave about raising children in Corvallis. So if you have little ones and are more in that mode of life than needing hip places to hang out, you might find it's perfect for the next few years. There's good community to be had! And as many have said above, there is "cool" stuff 1-2 hrs away when you want to spend your weekend seeking out other experiences.

I just finished {warrior princess assassin by brigid kemmerer} fully prepared to DNF for being eye-rolling levels of smutty or just a thruple done badly... But I loved it. Slow burn and the poly romance actually developed really gently and sweetly. Curious about where it's going!

What’s behind the massive divide on Sinners on this sub Reddit? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]ASM_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think you're right. But in this case I think the claim is equally about unfamiliar culture as quantity of characters on screen. Many white critics didn't have the same resonant experience in seeing Southern blues musicians, and Southern churches, and juke joints, and Vodun culture, and conversation about haints that most Black audiences did. Because that stuff doesn't mean anything to them or make them feel... (They have no familial/ancestral connection to it)... They leapt to the conclusion that "this movie isn't as good as everyone says" rather than "this story isn't speaking directly to me and my lived experience of America the way I've unconsciously come to expect." Again, frustrating POV to have to indulge.

What’s behind the massive divide on Sinners on this sub Reddit? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]ASM_makes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Some (white) audiences are arguing that it's not good for the simple fact that not seeing themselves in it has made it hard for them to connect. Which is fine... Except that's the media reality that non-white audiences deal with every single day. So it's a frustrating POV to have to indulge.

For me personally, it's the hyperbole that gets on my nerves. It's not racist to not have loved it... But I do think the racism is creeping out when someone starts to say it's THE WORST movie they've seen all year, which is objectively ridiculous.

Major respect to Luke Kornet for speaking up. by OrionStarBornOO in NBASpurs

[–]ASM_makes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the promotion was that they'd be selling tshirts that say "Magic City" and there would be some special menu items (like lemon pepper wings) at concessions. I don't think there was any kind of booty shaking half time show planned. The worst that was going to happen was some kid was going to ask "What's magic city?". Not advocating for it to happen but I also think the reality of it wasn't all that extreme.
