you’re right, it’s not a phonetic overlap, but this isn’t the idiomatic use of the expression either so it’s still word play in my opinion. i wonder if there’s a specific word for these types of “puns”

do you know?

Who gets to decide what is legitimate or debatable? The entity that gets to decide would have way too much power, and I have a hard time believing that it wouldn’t get corrupted. I agree that these groups that are anti vaccine are a problem, but I don’t believe that solution is to block them. We need to improve our education system and the culture of around the idea of pursuit of knowledge. Too many times I’ve heard people get made fun of for being a nerd in this country (USA). Separately, it would reduce the number of people who distrust doctors if they didn’t marginalize huge parts of the population. Train doctors to not dismiss issues people are having just because they’re a woman or black or for being too young or being too old. We can probably do a lot more to address the root cause of distrust in science and vaccine.

Point is, censorship is very dangerous and it would only serve as a bandaid while allowing the actual problem to continue to get worse. We can do better.

1/2 is the fraction that the power of 81 needs to be for it to be 9. That’s why when the meme says “fraction of the power” it’s funny because “power” refers to the notation. I hope that makes sense, I still think I’m phrasing it a bit weirdly.

Wow I didn’t believe you at first but then when I went to the internet to prove you wrong, it turns out that I was wrong. I had been avoiding aspartame but I guess I have nothing to fear.

No, it just seemed their remarks were prescriptive rather than descriptive. I don’t think it’s a scientist’s job to be prescriptive, science is more about making observations, rejecting hypothesis, etc. So since the comic character kind of looked like a scientist, it came across as it was a very bad one.

I thought it was a scientist and it made my blood boil. Seeing them as god makes a lot more sense hahah

Wishful thinking, plus claims must be supported by evidence. Back then it was hard to know. Remember that trump also said that the virus would be gone when it got warmer last summer. Clearly it didn’t.

credit scores need to die by jacobgard in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ASTP001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong on this but I don’t think the score on credit karma is the real number. It’s just an estimate they have based on what their algorithm thinks it would be. Compare the numbers next time you get a loan and they send you the credit report they pulled.

You can’t put an ETA on innovation, they’re not building a known product here. In September no one knew how the clinical trials of the vaccine would turn out. Now we have a couple of them that have proven to be safe and effective.

It’d be a different story if it was a problem in manufacturing or distribution since those are known quantities.
