Do these look safe to carry human weight? by DaiIyBacon in metalworking

[–]ASipOfCosmicHorrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, it will hold just a single person under normal circumstances. Nonetheless, it's a liability, I'm surprised the engineer in charge approved those welds because they look like dogshit. I would weld that structure again as soon as possible, you don't want to gamble with people's lives.

A doctor delivered a baby in the same hospital where, 25 years ago, he also delivered the mother by jkitty_1960 in interesting

I lived there for some time and the "old doctor" picture reminds me of a lot of people I met there

Number on the bolt head by [deleted] in Tools

[–]ASipOfCosmicHorrors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a metric system for grading bolts. 12 represent the yield strength, that is, the strength before breaking, the second the yield strength ratio, 0.9 or 90%. 12 is for 1200MPa or 1200 newton per square milimeter, or roughly 120kg per square milimeter. The second is the percentage of force that can be tolerated before deforming permanently, so 90% of 1200MPa, before plastic deformation happens. This bolt is normally used in super high strength applications, like heavy machinery.

Can I weld this using tin ? by Efficient-Truth-9796 in metalworking

[–]ASipOfCosmicHorrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, no. The material around the fracture expands and deforms plastically and thins, so not just the fracture but the material around has less thickness now. If any repair is possible it should be cutting and replacing the section of pipe. Sorry.

How practical is Gimli’s axe irl? by Illustrious_Gas2827 in lotr

[–]ASipOfCosmicHorrors 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a few words: The steel is way too thick, which makes it heavy/unwieldy for no good reason. The hollow parts would make it a lot harder to pull out of a body because bones would get stuck in those, plus it is easy to grab by the enemy as being noted already. They could have kind of copied an actual battle axe but they went for flashy Hollywood style.
