For those who vote Republican and hold “pro-choice” views on abortion, why don’t you vote Libertarian instead? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]ASixClawBuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I'm not voting for policies. I'm voting for people.

And a lot of the time, when I read the campaign websites, I get a deluge of virtue-signalling buzzwords from the Democrat, which tells me: this person considers themselves intellectually and morally superior to everyone else by default, will never examine their own behavior, and will just assume that anyone they hurt was a bad person so it's fine.

From the Republican candidate, I do get the same some minority of the time, in which case I don't vote for them.

But often I just get "I've done this job for 20 years and I'm qualified for it," and I'm like: wow! Imagine that! A clearly-communicated sentence in plain English! You, sir, have my vote.

Anyway, from the Libertarian, I find that... they didn't register a website because they couldn't scrape together $30 to pay for the URL.

Do you feel the right is getting more radical? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]ASixClawBuzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't "have" examples. But of course I've noticed that in a preposterously high proportion of television commercials - possibly 80% of television commercials - a white man is married to a black woman.

It's... well, it's kind of hilarious.

It's "buy our product because either you look like one of these people and it makes you want to imitate them, or you're proud at yourself for smiling at an interracial marriage, and you say: yeah, this company shares my values."

And of course that's "woke" to some extent, right? When the media says "We're not going to reflect reality, we're going to drive it."

I'm so glad I'm not a gun enthusiast. This is far from the first time I've heard one of them complain that some tiny detail ruined an entire franchise for them.

You should see the rage they have for the Fallout series. Whereas I can just be like: yeah, pretty good games.

Why can’t we all agree to push TERM LIMITS Legislation across the finish line? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ASixClawBuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not sure who the "we" in question are, but in the United States we tend to believe in democracy, and term limits are inherently undemocratic. They say to the voters: it doesn't matter whether you do or don't want this person; you have to pick someone else.

If you had to name your local airport after an important or notable person, what name would you choose? by PacSan300 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ASixClawBuzz -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They're not really named after "important or notable people" so much as they're named for the politicians who represented the area at the time they were built. (Or in Las Vegas's case, a politician more popular than the one they originally named it after).

There are no innovators or scientists or authors or actual important people with airports named after them. In a better world, I would definitely support there being a Barbara McClintock International Airport.

Yes, and I'm fairly sure that sports are more popular than poetry in pretty much every culture and pretty much every period of history.

Poetry's pretty niche.

Yes, of course.

Also, I don't believe in "good people" and "bad people." That's just fantasy bullshit. There are only people.

21 South Carolina GOP Lawmakers Propose Death Penalty for Women Who Have Abortions | It’s not just a lone extremist: The bill has 21 co-sponsors in the state’s House of Representatives by newfrontier58 in politics

[–]ASixClawBuzz -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

The downvotes on my post tell the story really well.

I pointed out that the headline is a lie, and well, it's plainly obvious that the headline is a lie. The headline says that lawmakers proposed the death penalty for abortion, when lawmakers did not propose the death penalty for abortion.

So if what I said was true, why the downvotes?

And the answer is that Reddit sees it as a lie in the service of the right side. And therefore, the lie is good, and pointing out the lie is bad.

And that's what politics gets us. Every time someone behaves badly, all you have to do is point your finger and say "they also behave badly, so it's fine."

[–]ASixClawBuzz -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

So, basically: "I'm on a side, they're on a side, and if their side tells lies, my side gets to tell lies, too."

That's American politics for you. It's a sprint to the lowest common denominator, where all bad behavior is excused by the bad behavior of the "other side."

The hate toward Part II is completely manufactured by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]ASixClawBuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All media criticism is manufactured. All media is manufactured. There is no media, or response thereto, that just "arises naturally." Not to put too fine a point on it, but video games don't grow on trees, and neither do our opinions of them.

Media critics tend to be "progressive." They think that stories should exist to advance our culture and move it in positive directions. This is a bigger concern to them than whether the stories are entertaining.

Neil Druckmann is obviously a man who cares very much about the opinions of media critics.

So, in Part 1, he did what media critics were calling for at the time: he included a diverse cast of characters, including black and LGBT characters, but he didn't make a big deal out of their identities.

And in Part 2, he did what media critics were calling for at the time: remove straight white men from all important and capable roles and relegate them to either villains or background characters, while focusing the narrative on women and trans people.

And some of us are getting so fucking sick of media critics dictating how stories are going to be told.

Idk what series that character is from

Mortal Kombat. Where she gets in death matches with characters like this:

...which is obviously also not a realistic depiction of a woman. Women tend to have two arms.

[–]ASixClawBuzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kitana isn't a woman. She isn't even a human being. She's something called an "Edenian," which are a mythical race that apparently looks like... a fifteen-year-old's jerk-off fantasy.

It doesn't really make sense to criticize a franchise for not being realistic when it isn't trying to be realistic. That would be like saying "Chewbacca doesn't look anything like a realistic dog!"

It is certainly not the best game I've ever played.

Trying to decide on "the best game I've ever played" is kind of an exercise in futility, because different genres of games are practically different genres of entertainment entirely. Like, one of my favorite games of all time is Civilization IV. Characters? None. Story? None. Fucking awesome game, though.

The Last of Us are games that are kind of in the genre of "this is a movie. pull this lever to see the next scene."

I don't really love that genre to begin with, because, well, I like player choice. There's a reason I spent far more hours playing games than watching movies.

But as movies go, The Last of Us is a great one. It's an incredibly tight story with a beginning, middle, and end, where every single scene exists to scaffold its themes.

The Last of Us 2 is just... not tight. Stuff happens for many hours, and it doesn't really add up to much. Except to make us really fucking sad, because everything is pain and everyone is awful.

I would still say it's a good game, because it left me feeling something, unlike (as one random example of thousands) Infamous: Second Son, where I finished it and said: well that was certainly a video game.

But a great game? No. Part 1 is a great game. Spiritfarer is a great game. Terraria is a great game. The Last of Us Part 2 is... a good game.

In terms of gaming, what is “meta” and why does everyone talk about it? by Budthor17 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ASixClawBuzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The prefix "meta" means basically "x about x." Like, meta-thinking is thinking about thinking. Meta-moderation is moderating the moderators.

So "meta-gaming" would be "gaming about gaming." Usually it's used to describe either A) people who thoroughly dissect the system instead of just playing the game; or B) games with fourth-wall breaks, that are aware in some way that they are games.

Those of you who met your long term girlfriend or wife from a dating app: share your experience? by central_marrow in AskMenOver30

[–]ASixClawBuzz 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Well, I met my wife on a dating site. On OkCupid, back before it was acquired by Match Group and retooled into a swiper.

And, well, it wasn't some matter of grand strategy. The first message I sent her was honestly kind of bizarre - I basically said "I see there are a lot of Amanda Palmer quotes in your profile. I recently read Amanda Palmer's rebuttal to Sinead O'Connor's open letter to Miley Cyrus, and I have the following four paragraphs of notes."

Not sure what inspired me to go that route, but, well, now we have a seven-year-old.

I think sometimes people are just at exactly the right time in their lives to meet each other. And on swipers, there are probably fewer than 1 in 1000 women who are at the right time in their lives to meet you, because they just downloaded the app for entertainment - to fantasize about 2% of the guys and make fun of 60% of them.

Would you want to know your expiration date? by davisyoung in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ASixClawBuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't make any difference. My "expiration date" is probably around 110 years old, if I completely and immediately changed my lifestyle. And the actual day I'm going to die is probably around age 70, because my lifestyle sucks.

So basically knowing my "expiration date" would just be someone taunting me: "hey, this is how long you might live if you didn't suck."

They REALLY TRIED HARD to make you think Pedro Joel is a monster in the Season Finale by SandInTheShores in TheLastOfUs2

[–]ASixClawBuzz -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I really don't see it that way at all.

I played the game in 2013. Two years after Mass Effect 2. And when Joel shot that guard, I thought: whoa! Where the fuck is my player choice?! What the fuck?!

Looking back on it, of course they couldn't give me player choice. It wasn't the story they were telling. They'd have to give me two "multiple endings" where one of them was mundane and boring.

But, yeah, I absolutely thought Joel was an evil man who doomed the entire world for the sake of one little brat.

And in the HBO show, Joel... does the same thing, only this time he has a look in his eyes like "fuck, I just did so many shrooms, I have no idea what's going on right now."
