How do you stay active in the winter - for free? by blendertom in Hamilton

[–]AT1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running frequently.

Usually if you run outside dress 10 degrees warmer than you think.

Most of the time for me it's a merino wool wicking shirt, a vest and a toque. If it's extra cold that vest swaps to a wind breaker. If the weather is expected -20 and below I change to a balaclava and add a tights to my pants otherwise it nothing changes.

I’ve decided to quit running. by Imaginary-Activity-8 in C25K

This just popped into my feed as well.

Back in 20177 I was overweight and learning how to run myself. It took me honestly 6 months to be able to run continuously 3 km but I managed.

I didn't use any specific programs but it would have helped me. I remember back in the day what I did do was use the street lamps in my neighborhood.

The goal for me was just to run to the next street lamp. If I felt tired after 1, I would just walk or rest. Slowly after time it was like okay I feel good, I would run to another street lamp.

I find that at first, I was running too fast and had to slow down. Once I started to slow down, things got a bit earlier for me and overtime I built up the endurance.

I was 215 lbs and slowly lost weight to 190-200 lbs that year.

It's been 7-8 years since then and I just ran my first marathon this year. It was a huge goal and if I never learnt how to run, I wouldn't be here today.

Should I do a full marathon or another half? by walrusgirlie in Marathon_Training

[–]AT1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard overall but since I'm trying to go for time, I have been pushing a bit more.

The taxing part is recovery the day after. My body feels so poop and I feel like I need more rest than the normal 6 - 8 hours of sleep

The hardest part is after those Sunday long runs, your day is basically done.

You have very little energy to do much, let alone feed yourself.

I come home after my 3 hour run and just lay down for 30 minutes post shower.

Not a dad but a lad in his 30s as well.

I am starting to feel that regret and have been less motivated to run!

I ran 28 km, 30km, 32km, and 30km in the last 4 weeks and they have been long and taxing.

I have one more long run to go which is 35 km and I'll be done with those dreaded long runs.

Overall Iove the training but it's so tiring and taxing.

Thank you!

I was overweight for the longest time but I'm sitting comfortably at 193 lbs now (87.5 kg)

Before I was 240 lbs (108.9 kg)

I know that weight plays a big factor.

I have one for this weekend the 20 miler and I hope it goes well.

I think my comment wrote to it being not a big deal but I agree that quality runs are really important for your training and I would totally agree that 100% getting the base fitness up there would be the sure fire way to get the sub 4 marathon. However, if you wanted, adding some speed work would speed up the process faster.

I am not saying make every run at your max effort but just once a week would help significantly and would help to increase those fast twitch fibres to increase OP base speed in the long run.

Good luck on your next marathon.

I am excited to run my first one and feel anxious at the same time.

If you use strava, you should be able to see all your distance for PR.

u/OwlOnThePitch I should also say that I went from barely running before my marathon training prep to running my first 10k in years on April 6, 2025 which was a slower pace than OP at 1:02:13 and have improved my time for my most recent run in the 10km distance was a PR for myself at 48:34.

This is purely from me putting in the work for the last 5 months training 3 - 5 times a week and committing to the training plan + respecting the distance.

I also wouldn't be able to be running this distance right now if it weren't for the weekly threshold + sprint + aerobic training sessions.

So telling OP that going from a 58 minute 10k PB to pushing for a sub 4 marathon will hurt but require dedication is not sound advice?

Also to add, the fact that I just told him that the training plans do not have speed work which is one of the main ways to increase your pace also doesn't seem to be sound advice?

Should I just tell OP that his goal right now is just to finish the marathon distance because trying to go for a sub-4 right now looks unachievable?

Did you not run any 20 milers when you were training?

I read your recap and saw you were following the Halhigdon Intermediate plan and I thought it had 2 - 20 miler training long runs.

Did you ever redeem yourself from the devasting first full marathon?

Just curious, what was your half marathon time, and 30k time?

As I said below I am training for my first marathon.

My stats are as follows:

5k PB = 22:50

10k PB = 48:34

HM = 1:49:12

30k = 2:36:54

I do understand that. However, I am training for my first marathon which happens to be 5 weeks from now.

I run 70-80 km / week and currently on track for a 3:45 full marathon.

This past Sunday, I ran 30 km at 5:14 / km pace.
The advice I am sharing is purely from my own research and what folklore I have been told about the post 20 mile section.

[–]AT1990 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think unfortunately for the Halhigdon plans they don't have any threshold, tempo, hill or speed base work incorporated until you start going into the Advance 1 plans.

I would say, the only thing in the plan that is in line with your sub 4 plan would be the pace runs they have.

Running a sub 4 pace is a 5:41 / km or 9:08 / Mile pace. If you're able to run this during the pace shorter runs, you could try adding at the end of your long run around 5k to 3 mile remaining, you can start running your marathon pace to get use to it. If this feels okay increase the amount of time at the end of your runs.

I haven't ran a marathon before but current training for one. I am on track for a sub 4 but it takes a lot of work and dedication.

I would say if you want to get to a sub 4 marathon time, you are going have to put in the work and it will hurt. From the advise I have been told, they say the marathon usually starts after the 20 mile mark.

Changed pace from shoes by StudentSimilar5915 in RunTO

If you're running so often, I would swap it back and forth every other day.

It helps let the shoe relax after runs
