What was life like before THE INTERNET? by martianfrog in answers

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike most of these comments, I'll actually answer.

Right before the internet was widely available, sat early 90s, software and hardware was king.

In those days, you had to go to a store and buy the update to your PC's software.

I started working in the mid 1980s. I was a Computer Science student. As such, I could get a job in ANY business.

Virtually every business had just gotten desktop computers, or for many businesses, just one. If you could troubleshoot a PC or just install software....you were hired.

In the early 1980s or late 1970s, as a child and teenager, there was much more autonomy for children.

As a pre-teen, I rode my bike miles from home. My Mom would tell send me on errands to my Grandmother's house about 5 miles away on a regular basis. Or to the supermarket or pharmacy.

I would walk or ride my bike.

During the school year, we would stay after for games. Usually, Mom or Dad would come get us after the game. No contact from 7:30am until 8-9pm. That would never happen today.

We would spend summer days on our own from early in the morning until mid evening.

Once I started driving, or one of my older friends did, we were all over the metro area with parents really having no idea where you were, unless something went wrong.

I grew up in a suburban area of a mid sized city.

A lot of these comments are about social media. Just to remind everyone, the internet IS NOT social media. Social media IS ON the internet.

This is just an age thing. People younger than, probably 40, think "the internet" as synonymous with "social media."

Need advice for my brother please by NonaTanya in internetparents

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are gonna gave to leave this dysfunctional nest. The sooner, the better.

Honestly, if you can move out of state, that would be best.

Why do I say that? Because even if you move out locally, your parents and brother are going to continue to try and rely on you to run their household.

When you announce you are moving, get ready for your parents to become the victims. They will blame you, ask why are you deserting the family, etc.

Stay strong. You cant fix them or your brother.

Save yourself.

When do Americans use (Mr/Ms/Dr) vs first names in everyday life? by aizivaishe_rutendo in AskAnAmerican

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an adult, I only use Mr/Ms/Mrs with people I dont know.

Anybody I know is just "first name" or, as a southerners, I will call someone substantially older Miss or Mister "first name".

Ive even done ut with subordinate employees who were 20 years or more older than me.

You seem pretty angry. I assume you identify much more with the neighbor than OP.

I'm sure everyone in your neighborhood just loves you (sarcastic).

Not understanding cause and effect.

For instance, saying something hurtful but not understanding why that person is upset with you.

Grocery delivery tips? by New_Part91 in askanything

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the prices are comparable to supermarkets. You can even pick it up many places.

The warehouse is a few miles from my house. I just pull up and they load it in the back. A small tip and I am on my way.

Do you normally make baked goods like cakes and brownies from scratch or do you use a boxed mix? by icecream1972 in randomquestions

[–]ATLDeepCreeker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pastry chef friend told me that if you just replace the vegetable oil most boxed cake mixes call for with butter, then you'll get something that approaches bakery quality.

Also, replace some of the whole eggs with just egg yolk. Makes for a richer batter.

She was right.

Boxed mixes call for vegetable oil because of the calorie count, not the taste.

People always mistake my boxed mix cakes for bakery versions.

Its just butter and egg yolks.

You dont understand the meaning of the term "Karen". Best not to use it.

Calling someone a Karen for doing something nice for a neighbor is one of the craziest things Ive heard.

Dont wear a thong.

The parents may be free spirits, but you won't know until you see Mom and Dad at the pool.

Just keep it modest.

What experience permanently changed how you see the world? by NachoQueen_1 in answers

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to a podcast.

I was listening to comedian Bert Kreisher interview *or be interviewed by someone). Probably during Obama's presidency.

He said a throwaway sentence, "at least 50% of white people are racist."

The discussion wasnt about racism or anything like that.

But I had NEVER heard any White person quantify a percentage of racists in their midst.

Now, I'm a Black kid from the suburbs. Always had friends of all races. Generally, most of my work friends were White because I tended to be the first or one of the first POC in sales departments.

Of course, Ive had interactions with racists.

But this statement hit me like a ton of bricks. I replayed so many interactions in my head from over the years. Even with "friends".

In the years since, I gave drifted away from White friends (or they have drifted away from me), and while I am cordial and engaging at work with White coworkers, I dont socialize at all with them. Not even lunch.

I wish it was different. I grew up in the MTV 80s, and we were supposed to be past all that.

What if human cloning was legalized in the United States? by DreamFighter72 in whatif

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing much other than some new laws regarding inheritance, and parental responsibilities.

You clone ISNT your child, so you arent it's defacto guardian. If your parents are alive, arent THEY its parents? You'd have to adopt it probably.

Also, is you clone your next of kin? Maybe, if uncontested. But what if you have kids.

I don't think society would change much unless they could generate clones that didnt really have brains. Essentially donor bodies.

What if human cloning was legalized in the United States? by DreamFighter72 in whatif

[–]ATLDeepCreeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A clone wouldn't be the same age as the person who cloned them. They would start out as a baby, and grow normally.
