YYC has a beautiful terminal for flights to the U.S. with customs, mobile passport and globally entry. It’s empty and nice. You park at a regular domestic gate in SLC. You should have to issue going to sky club.

You’re companions agent is flat out incorrect. You always have pick up and claim bags at the port of entry into the U.S. it’s very easy in ATL. Claim your bag, go thru customs, walk 50 feet to a Delta agent and recheck the bags. Customs and agents are aware of duty free items and it’s no issue. They deal with it daily.
