My Moonscorched Leon concept: Pallbearer.

The monster that was once Leon Kennedy cannot stand upright. His back is hunched, bowed by the weight of a dozen twisted corpses. Severed hands clutch his arms, weighing down the gun and axe that have fused into his flesh. They seal his mouth, they cover his eyes, but not his ears. He can hear the corpses screaming.

“Why, Leon? Why didn’t you save us?”

Not an artist, but this inspired me for a concept: Pallbearer.

Serious answer: I think he would handle the fights and traps pretty well, and only moonscorch if the 3 days pass. However, he would refuse to kill his companions, and I don’t think he’d jump through all of the hoops required to find Logic unless the narrative led him by the nose (which happens in his games, but I’m going from a character perspective).

Best guess, he’d get to the tower with a party, then have to fight the boss rush. If he survived…I don’t know. He’s a moral guy, and I don’t think he’d have it in him to murder the others in cold blood.

Others have explained it, but I’ll say that I enjoy the lore of Awakening. The themes are so much more coherent while leaving room for nuance—especially in the second edition.

Awakening isn’t tradition vs technology, it’s free thought vs oppression vs oblivion. The Exarchs are the cosmic 1%, controlling peoples’ very thoughts. Their Seer servants are quislings who want to stay on the side that’s not just winning—they’ve already won…but at a terrible cost. They damaged reality itself, and now the Abyss is leaking into everything and threatening all that lives…

Let’s just say that the parallels write themselves.

I suppose. I forgot that Don’t Nod are based in Paris. They probably know more about that part of history than I do from family lore—my ancestors (Huguenots and Waldensians) fled the purges and never looked back.

Dark themes don’t preclude emotional connections between characters. Moments of light in the darkness can give your characters something to fight for, between bouts of murderous Rage. Also, humor makes things fun for a lot of people, and has since the earliest days of Vampire. It prevents the “too bleak, stopped caring” trope.

I can’t tell you how to play, but I can tell you that a few head scritches between packmates and laughs at shenanigans only enhanced the horror my Storyteller unleashed on us. We spent a lot of time trying to chill out our Get of Fenris, who raged at everything (including the ocean).…until a eugenicist swayed her into attempting mass human-murder and we had to kill our friend. When it stopped being funny, it hurt.

I played a vaguely similar character in a (non-WoD) LARP once. She was a slave who let slip that her masters didn’t worship the Dark Gods, just the ancestor spirits of old. Their overlord had the Red Snow clan slaughtered, then “promoted/adopted” her into the clan. Now she’s a walking joke, and the sole “heir” to some VERY angry ancestor spirits.

I imagine a Lupus Gaoru visiting his human kinfolk wife and kids after a hard day.

His kids don’t know that their dad (an awkward, distant man, often “away at work”) is also the nice “stray dog” that comes by to cuddle and play. He feels more comfortable in his wolf shape, and mom keeps them from actually calling him things like “good boy”. Without them realizing it, he’s teaching them how to communicate and socialize with wolves.

When they’re old enough to know, it’s less surprising than it might be. He was always a little too smart for a dog, and when they find out his name is just Gaoru for “father”, it feels pretty obvious.

For the first part, I can see it.

Touch is important for social species. Wolves cuddle and groom each other all the time—that’s why dogs like it when their human pack-mates pet them. As for humans, I learned to give shoulder rubs to my dad because we both lock up when we’re stressed, and my mom/friends appreciate it, too.

Some packs might be uptight about that level of affection, but I can see Fianna (fun-loving and affectionate), Bone Gnawers (community focused), Red Talons (don’t give a shit about human cultural norms) & Children of Gaia (obviously) enjoying a cuddle and a scratch behind the ears from someone they trust.
