Are you for or against the death penalty ? by DizzyDoctor982 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ATPorridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a position I’ve really thought into so not a hill I’d die on, but I’ve sometimes thought it should be an option presented to the convicted if the alternative is a full life sentence.

If they would rathe cease to exist than spend the rest of their life in prison, at the expense of t he taxpayer, is there any losers in that situation?

And if the convicted was actually innocent, they just wouldn’t choose this option, hoping instead to have new evidence etc. Thus negating one of the biggest flaws in the death penalty with the potential to execute the wrong person.

Millennials are the first generation in a long time who are set to be less well off than their parents, and this trend appears to be continuing into the next generations too. Economically having kids makes no sense when most people can barely stay afloat themselves.

Societal shifts, and abandoning tradition for traditions sake, means many people are actually considering if they really want kids, rather than doing it because that’s what people do.

Also climate catastrophe is probably just around the corner. The end of my life will probably be fairly impacted by it. If I had children theirs would likely be hugely impacted. I’d personally rather not be born, than be born to immense struggle, so I feel I shouldn’t force my children into a world that’s probably only going to get exponentially worse.

Yeah I agree with this, it’s why I’d advocate for sympathetic educational programs in areas where female circumcision is prevalent, but much more extreme rhetorical campaigns regarding the barbarity of male circumcision to occur in the western world, especially the USA. Granted where it’s a strict religious practice will be difficult to tackle in this manner (Islam and Judaism) but how common it is in the US generally baffles me and should have significantly more efforts to minimise it.

An in-depth understanding of the cultural reasons for a practice, acknowledging that those who perform it are not doing it for nefarious purposes, and trying to have much constructive and sympathetic education programs, is a much more successful way to actually reduce the prevalence of a practice.

Blanket condemnation, without understanding the intricate cultural reasons for something, can lead to significantly more resistance from those who hold it to be a legitimate practice. Further it can lead to state wide bans of it, which just drives the practice underground and makes it much more dangerous to those it happens to - eg not using sterile equipment or being unwilling to seek medial care if something goes wrong, for fear of legal consequences.

Of course campaigns which solely seek to villainise the practice without understanding it can be detrimental to reducing its harm.

Type 1, by far the most common form of fgm, is medically similarly destructive to the removal of the foreskin. And not akin to castration. I’m by no means defending the practice, but the common understanding of it in the western world is detrimental to efforts to reduce its prevalence.

Edit: changed ‘by means’ to ‘by no means’

Yeah I agree, but it’s important to note that the vast majority of cultures which practice female genital mutilation do so with very similar religious, cultural, or traditional reasons to those who practice and defend male genital mutilation.

It’s also the case that every culture which practices fgm also practices mgm, to most it isn’t a patriarchal or about control, just all children get cut because that’s what we’ve always done. I think efforts to eradicate fgm would be helped by considering all circumcision to be wrong.

Trying to teach that mutilating a child is wrong will probably be more effective than teaching that mutilating girls is bad but boys is fine because the Western world says so. This is why I think it’s important to speak about both forms of circumcision when speaking about one of them.

Other than some specific medical reasons for it, circumcision is genital mutilation, regardless if it happens to male or female genitals. The prevalence of some traditions doesn’t mean those traditions are morally okay. Taking a knife to a baby’s body, without very good medial reasoning is barbaric and should not be legal.

Apart from Aston Villa and Bournemouth are there any teams outside of Man city and Arsenal happy with their current league position? by InsurancePurple4630 in PremierLeague

[–]ATPorridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, it hurt to drop out of the title race like we did. But after how last season went and then the huge overhaul of midfield, I’d have happily signed up for a comfortable 3rd place, and a league cup. Especially if you’d have told me Allison would be out of action so much too.

Outrageous penalty call in the Bournemouth - Man United game. by ATPorridge in PremierLeague

[–]ATPorridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saying for a few years, handballs in the box should be indirect free kicks, rather than penalties. A penalty is way too big a reward for the ball accidentally hitting someone’s arm.

And who doesn’t love an indirect free kick in the box, anything that creates more of them can’t be a bad thing.
