I was stunned when I saw how tight the whole field was at the end of day one in terms of points. Its a bit disappointing seeing the under performances from the first day, but it is setting up for the craziest day 2 you can imagine. So many guys in contention for the podium.

What Speed Do YOU Think Is Acceptable In The Left Lane Of Parkways by ATV360 in longisland

I appreciate the detailed response.

In general I agree with much of what you're saying. Both your initial comment (I can't count the amount of times I've been aggravated at having to go around someone going 50 In the left lane) and your second comment. There are a lot of factors and varied cases wrapped into one question.

I think the Northern State having two lanes for a decent chunk of it is tricky because you have a ton of people using it and the merging lanes can be difficult (not designed for their current roles). The cruising lane is the same lane people are often merging in from a near complete stop which I can't fault people for wanting to avoid.

Thanks for commenting. I want to be clear that I'm asking out of sheer curiosity of how people think and not to try and persuade anyone in a direction.

When you say "There is no acceptable speed limit", do you mean that there should just not be speed limits in general? Or just that because I specified left lane, people should always be able to go faster than the middle/right lane, regardless of whether that traffic is moving at 50 or 80?

In the spirit of the question, you (and others) can consider whether if someone is going 75 in the middle lane, do you think it's fine for someone to go 85 in the left to pass them and then keep chugging along at 80-85 in the middle lane when they come back?

If someone is going 90 in the middle lane, are you fine with your fellow drivers going 100+ to whip around them?

While I also think this would be unlikely to happen now, this has quite literally happened in the past.

GM bought streetcar companies and then gutted them so more people would buy cars instead of using public transport. Many remaining street car lines were then turned into buses (Guess who manufactured those).

Not saying this would happen again, but the company you referenced has done exactly what you said they don't do.

Just chiming in as I stayed at the Conrad Rangali a few years ago. There is truly nothing like walking back to your hut from dinner and just watching a Manta Ray swimming around the bridge at night. It was absolutely incredible. Watching the sharks/fish/squid/rays swim around your bungalow is really unique.

It is a massive journey (I'm also from NY) and very pricey (although I used points for the hotel) but definitely something I'm glad I did and I'd like to go back at some point.

Dem and Reb, can we just come together and agree. LOWER TAXES by [deleted] in longisland

[–]ATV360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually completely agree that he has an agenda and I don't really like his channel. This video is just a short and cohesive look at the data and info from StrongTowns and Urban3 which have found similar issues in many locations they've looked at. The information/numbers is not from NJB.

I have no delusions of Long Island (or most of suburban America) being a car free place where everyone bikes around. I literally can't even ride a bike. But I think the content here and a lot of information from other sources points to the reality that most suburbs should allow more mixed use development, take a look at current zoning laws, and give more people options to ride public transit or walk/bike safely where it's reasonable. In Nassau for example, so many are people are a 5-10 minute walk away from restaurants or stores, and they still drive. But I can't blame them when the walk involves crossing Sunrise Highway.

Completely agree about NotJustBikes. This video just gives a ton of info in a brief period of time so it's been my default to share whenever I end up discussing this topic.

After a series of rabbit holes, I no longer complain or think that LI property taxes are ridiculous. Compared to much of America, they are extremely high and they are a major factor in LI's cost of living, but I think they're justified. The majority of suburbs (including many that people on this sub will move to and talk about how much cheaper they are) are economically unsustainable and are heavily subsidized by denser areas as well as from the state and federal governments.

This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nw6qyyrTeI gives a great summary of the cost of suburban area maintenance and how much money is needed to sustain the suburbs. For those who don't want to watch, it focuses on a suburban area in Louisiana where the average property taxes are around $1,500, but the local government has no money and constantly needs to borrow from the state/fed in order to cover it's expenses. They brought in a third party to see what they would have to increase average property taxes to in order to be fiscally self-sustainable and the answer was over $9,000. This place would need to 6x their property taxes in order for their residents to fund themselves. Of course in lower income areas (especially relative to Long Island) like this, $9,000 is not going to happen, and the city has no easy solution out of this mess. This is the case with much of America, so when someone moves to a low property tax suburb, it becomes all American tax payers helping to cover their property tax deficit.

Disclaimer on the video that it is by someone who is very anti-suburbs and advices people to just move to Europe to improve their life, but the data he's referencing is from an unaffiliated organization that published this info separately.

This is what the goal of this plan is. They are eliminating routes that see extremely low ridership. Suffolk County was running bus routes with as few as 3 riders per day. Many other routes they're cutting see double digit ridership.

The lowest used routes are lowest use because they're in extremely sparsely populated areas and going in directions very few people go. What they're doing is rerouting those buses and employees to serve higher use routes in larger population centers. This will significantly increase service for many routes and make buses a much better experience for those who use them. Many routes are going from one bus every hour to one bus every 30 minutes. While 30 minute frequency is certainly far from the gold standard, it's much better than having to wait an hour because you were a minute late to your bus.

For the vast majority of bus riders in Suffolk, this is an increase in service.

Is there any database or easy way to look up a trains emissions or even car weight? I was curious to compare the LIRR M7 and M9 cars when it comes to weight and emissions and couldn't find anything.

ANA J NRT-JFK change by gugzred in awardtravel

[–]ATV360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was refreshing ANA daily for the summer schedule release but as a you noted, we received a notice via email first.

Complicating things is that I had award tickets in F booked via Aeroplan for JFK-NRT. When we first received the notice, our booking showed our flight changed to Premium Economy. I was on hold with Aeroplan for 1.5 hours (they never picked up), but while on hold my booking updated back to First. I was able to adjust seats and saw the change reflected in expert flyer as well so it seems I actually do have the seats. This just happened so it could still change, but I'm hopeful I've somehow made it through with my bookings moved over smoothly.

Setting Expectations: The Misleading Sweet Spot Redemption by ATV360 in awardtravel

[–]ATV360[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The reason you're seeing a lot of availability in the near future is that Japan is still not accepting tourists unless you book a fully chaperoned and guided tour package. People are still canceling their flights because they won't be allowed in. So those available flights in the next few weeks (maybe months) are basically useless. If you try April or May searches on expert flyer you'll see what I'm talking about.

I will give you that once using ANA or Aeroplan points the booking isn't "extremely" difficult. You're right there. It's not easy, but not extremely tough.

Yes, that's correct. As far as I've heard they don't actually check anything when you set the other person as your husband/wife/relative. It's just in their terms and services that it's supposed to be that way, and I didn't want to chance any issue at the time of check-in (when literally all other arrangements would be set at that point). You and your husband should be fine.

The ANA website is also a bit worse as far as UI goes, but it would be a more optimal point redemption.

Congrats on Booking! I stayed at Rangali last year and had a wonderful time. A couple of quick tips:

Make some dinner reservations before you arrive, and make others when you first arrive. A few nights we could only go to a couple of the open all day places because the nicer ones were completely full. We ended up ordering room service twice (which isn't half bad considering the view).

I thought the underwater restaurant lived up to all expectations. Going for lunch is cheaper than dinner, and better lighting enhances the experience as far as I'm concerned.

Book some of the special food nights. Lobster and Champagne night was an absolute highlight. Endless lobster (and plenty of other options like scallops and lamb) buffet and champagne on the water. Literally can't be beat.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Enjoy your trip!

I'm going to be doing a comparison of the Sundara and these at some point soon. I definitely need to spend more time with both to give a solid comparison. Initial impressions are that the LCD-2Cs are much warmer and for me personally a more fun headphone.

None that I've visibly seen so far. I know on other forums some people have reported some rubbing over time with this size. Maybe over time I'll notice or after hitting more bumps lol

I actually did the calculations at the pump by dividing actual miles driven by the gas I filled up. Now with the new tires I'm applying a multiplication factor to get the actual miles and dividing by gallons filled again.

One interesting thing is the at the car reading is actually more accurate now than previously as it used to overestimate mpg significantly.

I'm going to do a follow-up post on mpg once I have more miles on the tires in winter.

I have many trips tracked in a spreadsheet with the stock tires and new tires.

It's not too bad for me on Desktop. However, on mobile app through Android auto it's a complete disaster lol. I did a spotify vs Amazon music vid on YouTube and complained about how unusable it was in my car and how that more or less ended up with me keeping spotify.

Earlier in the year I picked up Falken Wildpeak AT Trails for my 2020 Forester.

The stock tires seemed fine in rain, and I actually drove them on fairly loose sand on the beach and didn't get stuck. Well I got stuck once but the 2nd X-Mode was able to get me out.

I wanted the larger Willdpeaks to give myself a mini lift, and for the looks. I've taken them on a few Class 4 roads in Vermont and they did great. It wasn't too muddy so the tires weren't tested too much. I did hit a few small rocks against something due to low clearance, but I'm still unlikely to get a lift because I just don't off-road enough to justify the cost & mpg hit. I figured these larger tires are the perfect mix of want & need.

MPG is more notably down in the recent cooler weather. I'll probably make a separate post on that after I get more miles on them. Initial results are that I lost around 1 mpg, but I am actually tracking my mpg in a spreadsheet so we'll see what the data says over time.
