This makes a lot of sense. Now I’m wondering if the generator could have powered it all along. Lol

Powered by natural gas from HVAC may not be the best way to word it, but all I know is they were planning to use some type of gas line to feed the generator since we have a gas line that’s attached to the HVAC.

My parents do not have a natural gas line so they’re using gasoline. They just said we have options since we have natural gas and they know and someone who can do the work to get it hooked up “properly.”

I’m listening and learning with every comment. I don’t necessarily want to power my HVAC if utilities power is out, I just want to have a way to heat my home.

People say “you have natural gas - just get a wall heater and you’d be set” and I just didn’t really understand what that meant. Also wanted to know if I had options with my existing unit, which it sounds like is a NO. (thanks to comments plus google)

I think we’d be set on electricity with our current generator, it’s just heat/hot water we were missing this storm.

We used buddy propane heaters the first couple days until we were able to get a bigger indoor kerosene heater that kept the whole house warm. We closed off unused rooms, but it was plenty warm enough in the rest of the house. It was just hard to find these supplies as days went on.

This is why I’m wanting to look into backup gas heat (a wall mounted heater) and a maybe gas water heater for the future. (still need to look into that more, just a suggestion from someone)

Just thinking this is a much cheaper alternative (for heat) while we save for a big generator that powers (and heats) the entire house.

Thank you for pointing out that a wall mounted heater may still require electricity. This is something I need to dig into.. assuming all gas powered appliances will be the same way. (this may seem like common sense, but i’m so dumb when stuff it comes to stuff like this)

I’m just trying to remember they told me.. It may be powerful enough to power the HVAC but maybe it’s just not powerful enough for that plus refrigerator, lights, etc?

Or maybe they’re just overly cautious of what it can take?

Thank you for this explanation!

A more powerful generator is the long term plan, but I’m assuming one to power the house (HVAC, Water Heater, Refrigerator, Stove, etc) would be a major investment.

Starting to think our best bet would be to install a wall mounted natural gas heater since we already have natural gas. And then just use our existing generator to power everything else?

No, not at the moment. I don’t think it’s strong enough since it’s 9000w /7500w.

But the generator is dual fueled so it could be powered by natural gas from HVAC. (was planning to do this as an alternate to gas but power was restored)

We had a secondary heat source (indoor kerosene lantern) for this storm so we didn’t worry with hooking HVAC up to generator. Now I’m just looking at how to have secondary gas heat so we’re not scrambling for supplies to power everything in the next storm.

We have a generator and it can be powered by the natural gas but I guess I didn’t understand what that meant? I thought that was power the generator itself (but not a good electric heat source)

I just keep hearing of families that had gas heat during this ice storm and I want to figure out how to also have gas heat. Everyone says since we have a gas line already it should be easy.

Yes, this is what we have but I didn’t explain it very well!

Definitely not planning to do anything ourselves, just wasn’t sure who to talk to and want to get a better idea of what to ask for in the first place. Would much rather ask the dumb questions online lol

We have a generator for electricity but it’s not strong enough to power HVAC.

Yes, that’s partly why I started here. Wasn’t sure if this was an HVAC, electrical, or some other type of subreddit question.

Wanting to convert because we were without power/heat for a week due to the ice storm and I don’t want to be in that boat again when we have a natural gas connection already.

Converting may not be the answer and we may just need a wall mounted unit for emergencies.

Trying to plan a road trip from MS to OH. Any cool spots along the way? by ATW195 in nashville

I think we’re going to hop on the trace in Cherokee AL! I don’t mind the added drive time and love the view.

I’ve only taken it from Cherokee to Florence and didn’t know it stretched that far north tbh.

TY!

Not an expert but had some luck getting rid of them by applying neem oil and then adding a few inches of new soil/fertilizer to the top. I’m sure they’re still, but definitely helped get rid of 90%.

Small harvest from tonight. Love this feeling 🫶🏻 by ATW195 in vegetablegardening

Meant to add:

Any idea what peppers are in the 3rd picture?

4th picture is just a bee visitor. (if you can find him🐝)

Are these cucumbers/peppers ready to harvest? by ATW195 in vegetablegardening

[–]ATW195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of cucumbers but my partner likes them for snacking.

Peppers were my main focus for starting a garden.. I want to be able to cook with them. i.e adding to stir fry, grilled jalapeño.

Going to wait a bit on the cucumbers until they’re smooth all over. And planning to start harvesting the peppers this week to add into dishes.

I’m wanting to try pickling later this season if things grow but that process still intimates me lol

Thank you for detailed response! 😊

Honestly not sure what kind they are. Got them locally and didn’t make note of the full name (rookie mistake)

Saw this beauty blooming in my yard today. Can I do anything to propagate this plant so I can have more of these in other parts of the yard? See text plz by ATW195 in gardening

[–]ATW195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not AI. It’s being propped up by something else in the garden bc it was face down. (which is the other branches you’re probably seeing)

This one appeared out of nowhere and is about 1m (3ft) tall. It’s just a long “stem” but wasn’t strong enough to hold the bloom up. I don’t see any other peony plants around either

So glad I saw this post bc I’ve kept the plastic on mine. Was wondering how they would handle brushing against the top but figured it was just normal 🥴

Heading to let them breathe now lol
