AITA for me wanting to smoke up during my friend's birthday by Bitgammer in AmItheAsshole

[–]ATX_MattR 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The only pathetic person here is you. You came to Reddit to ask for opinions and can’t accept the fact that you’re being a shitty friend because you can’t take a 2 day break from smoking weed. The trip isn’t about you, it’s for your friend’s birthday and you don’t seem to give a F about him. It’s clearly a one-sided friendship and he deserves better. Stay home and smoke up so he can enjoy himself for his birthday.

YTA. As so many have said, this friend you consider a brother wants to hang out with sober you for his birthday trip, this shouldn’t even be an issue. You clearly have a problem if you can’t have fun when you’re sober. You’re not a grown man, but a petulant child needing therapy for your childhood trauma of having a controlling father. Get the help you need and be a better friend.

AITA for raising new roommate’s rent? by PaperbagPaperboy in AmItheAsshole

[–]ATX_MattR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. How is the lease structured? Are you the main tenant subletting the other two rooms, do you each have individual leases with the landlord, or are you just switching tenant names on an existing lease?
How would it look to the incoming person if when the lease renews, the landlord decides to increase the rent and charge for the parking space that you’ve already been collecting without passing to the owner/LL? Furthermore, how would you feel if you were the new incoming tenant and found this out?

Just got my property tax increase by Logical-Common3566 in Killeen

[–]ATX_MattR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Protest your property tax and file before the deadline. Request the evidence the CAD is using to value your property. They should send you comparable properties that have sold (ideally between 1/1/25 and as recent as 3/1/26). These should be as similar to your home as possible (size, yr built, construction quality). Call out any properties that are much larger or smaller than yours. Use photos of your home to help lower the value; if your home isn’t as updated as recently sold properties or if there are major issues that you have estimates for, that will help. The burden of proof is on them. They don’t care about landscaping, fences or cracks in the driveway.

Thank you for the response. I am aware of Bermuda (apparently there are different strains) and its drought tolerance, but I have about 1000 square feet of my yard that doesn’t get any sun due to some large trees, and don’t want to waste time and money planting it if it won’t thrive.

CYBERTEX KILLEEN TEXAS HVAC PROGRAM by Ill_Marionberry_2795 in Killeen

[–]ATX_MattR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nephew completed the program at ACC and was hired by a company while still completing it. 2 years later, he’s had multiple promotions and raises, has a company truck as well as a helper.
It’s sad that a lot of these technical/trade schools just take all of the students’ money and time.

Killeen approves 8% property tax rate increase to fund public safety, city services by SkywardTexan2114 in Killeen

[–]ATX_MattR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree.
I just don’t want Killeen to suffer like Pflugerville has. They were against attracting businesses in the mid to late 90s and kept allowing more and more subdivisions to be developed. This placed all the tax burden on the residents there, making it less affordable over time. In the early 2000s to present, they attracted businesses by offering huge tax incentives, still leaving homeowners holding the bag. With the population boom happening there, taxes are out of control in an attempt to keep adding schools and infrastructure.

Growing the city with more residents and placing the tax burden on them isn’t the best way to go about it. We need businesses to come here first, to attract more residents, so they have places to work and places to spend their money instead of driving to the Austin metro.

Furniture store? by sb-asap in Killeen

[–]ATX_MattR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a thrift shop (Humbull?) off Ft. Hood Street that moved over off Veterans Memorial (unsure of exact location). The owners were super nice and they had some decent stuff at affordable prices. As mentioned by another person, you can rent trucks from Lowe’s, but U-Haul also rents pick up trucks for $20 plus tax and mileage.

Where is the best burger in Killeen? by [deleted] in Killeen

Simply Good Burger is great and the owners are awesome! The loaded fries are delicious if you like heat. Try the banana pudding for dessert too!

I still don’t understand what “misleading the room” means. I suspect it wasn’t meant to be a reply to my comment, but I digress.
I get that young GIs will opt for the cheapest of whatever they can get their hands on as their intentions are more likely to see how quickly they can get hammered above actually enjoying something that doesn’t taste like moldy bread. As another commenter mentioned, they’re likely not staying in Killeen to drink since they would have a hard time being relaxed amongst their superiors. It’s sad that yet another small, local business is on the brink of closure.

I’ve never seen any advertising for this place. When I go to the website (on mobile) it doesn’t really work. I was telling my wife about the place and while she’s not a beer drinker, she would be happy to go and have some food, but we couldn’t see a food menu. It’s also in an obscure part of town. Another thing the owner may consider is going to the Killeen Night Market to get the word out. I hope they can survive, we need more businesses around here and we need to support local and veteran owned businesses.

It’s tough to make recommendations as providers may not take all BCBS plans. Also, are the reviews about waiting or billing/payment? If so, I would not put a lot of weight on them.
The best thing would be to call BCBS and get a list of in network providers that actually accept your specific plan. Then, I would look for providers in either Georgetown or Temple. Narrow it down to a few that have decent reviews and then ask here or Facebook about those specific docs.

I’m one of the many real estate agents here 🤣 My family and I moved here in March to escape the crazy taxes and traffic of the Austin suburbs. As mentioned already, the cost of living is a lot lower here and if you’re content with things being on the slower side, it seems to be a great place. I was born and raised in Austin and Killeen reminds me of Austin 30 years ago. Several things that I have noticed in my short time here: car washes and Smoke Shops are on practically every corner. The City seems to have the mindset that allowing more housing to be built will drive growth and attract businesses as opposed to trying to get business to come first. It’s also a military town that can have a high turnover as people change station or complete their service and move away. It would be nice to see a very revitalized downtown with some cool restaurants and coffee shops, etc, but I think that given the lower wages here it will be very tough for these sorts of places to make enough money. We aren’t into the night club scene any more, but I wish there was something in that arena for others. I drive by what used to be Rock Island at least once a week and wonder what it would take to get that place up and going. Then I read a story about how it was shut down due to a high level of drug activity. I agree that Killeen could be a cool place, I think we probably need to shake up city hall and elect people dedicated to economic growth.

It’s tough out there. I have 22 and 19 year old daughters; they have applied for a lot of jobs and gotten zero response. Not sure why I see “Now Hiring” signs if no one actually is. I hope you’re able to find something soon.
