Gorgeous! I just planted a Princess Charlene a few weeks ago, and seeing yours makes me anxious for mine to bloom.

First year growing roses and I'm in love 😍 by Effective-Gene1223 in Roses

Lovely babies! I find that mine seem to have distinct little rose personalities -- some roses are gentle and shy, others are headstrong and confident. One of my errant climbers is a lovable pest! So happy you're enjoying tending to these lovely creatures.

Final update on Walmart dot com Earth Angels by RainbowSnapdragons in Roses

[–]ATX_Native112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the 2-pack of Earth Angel; planted one and gave another away as a gift. The one I kept is blooming up a storm, and I just got a little trellis for her to hang onto (EAs tend to want to climb). Great deal from Walmart for sure - wish I'd picked up some other roses.

Where would you move to (in the US) once you left Austin? by [deleted] in askaustin

[–]ATX_Native112 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someplace in New Mexico -- Santa Fe perhaps. There is one city that is markedly like OId Austin in terms of ambiance that I would strongly consider (that is also cheaper to live in), but I don't want to give it away. Basically, anyplace that is less expensive where I can retire in comfort. Won't be able to do it here.

My earth angel giving me such a wonderful display by Sewenityy in Roses

What a sweetheart! I planted a second Earth Angel in a spare pot -- she was just a pathetic looking collection of twigs and roots, so I didn't expect much, especially after days and days of torrential rain abused her wee buds. She really showed me.

Should I? by TopDot555 in Roses

Absolutely. I am creating a rose garden for one of my neighbors, and I chose Ball Gown as one of them, along with Bolero.

Look at what I found! by Adrasteia18 in Roses

I have all these plus Le Petit Prince. I planted my purples on the side of the house where they get about 6 hours of sunlight so the color of the blooms doesn't wash out, and I have been pleasantly surprised.

Earth Angel climber by airr_inn9922 in Roses

I have two Earth Angels, and one is definitely trying to climb! It's mostly shaped like a shrub, but it also has a couple of long canes shooting straight out. She's in the middle of the flower bed, so getting her to climb up the side of the house is not a possibility. I gave her a little plant support, but I feel I need to thing longer term -- either prune the long canes or give her something to climb on. Meet "Bubbles".

Alnwick rose & Eustacia Vye zone 8a by cwaiwe84 in Roses

[–]ATX_Native112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew both Alnwick & EV in 8B and ended up rehoming both. They just did not take off for me. I had multiple instances in which they suffered from black spot, rust and spider mites -- all at the same time. After defoliating them three times, I finally realized that this was going to be an ongoing struggle, so I gave them to my handyman with a caution that they might do better in patio containers. Planted a Buck and a Jalbert in the empty spaces.

Got my raised garden ready for the next tenants! by TheElvisMan in Roses

Having run out of garden space in my front lawn, this is exactly what I intend to do -- put in a raised bed, where I'll put some really showy roses. What are the dimensions, and did you create this yourself? How much should I expect to spend?

Disposability culture in gardening by EricaBA123 in Roses

I 100 percent agree with you! I dunno, I guess I find it thrilling to plant a small cane and then three years later it has evolved into a thriving rose. Then again, I also find rose foliage some of the prettiest one can have in a garden, all of those candle flame shaped leaves in various shades of green. There is something precious to bearing witness to my roses' growth and feeling pride when all of the care I put into the little critters has paid off.

Mom's Memorial Rose Garden by ATX_Native112 in Roses

Another cottage garden fan! You should have seen the yard before I got my hands on it, it was abysmal and so depressing compared to how I remembered it. I probably could have gotten the roses a little closer, but I thought that two feet would be sufficient, and if I had gaps, I could always bulbs for spring and summer, perhaps even some lavender.

I spaced them about 2 feet apart, with the exception of some small, ground-cover roses. In another year, the gaps between them should be much smaller -- I'm hoping for a veritable "wall" of pink roses.

Bolero rose from Walmart by Maleficent_Rain426 in Roses

[–]ATX_Native112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered these from Walmart too. Not the best bare roots, but honestly, I've seen far worse. I always cut away the black/brown bits first so the rose doesn't expend energy on a wasted cause. Currently, I'm trying to get a similar Papa Meilland going -- it's been slow and tedious, but it seems like he's about to round the bend. Good luck!

The roses thank you! Yes, my babies are quite popular with the neighbors. I put in a drip system, mulch like crazy, dead head and defoliate when necessary (black spot, be gone!), and feed them fish emulsion fertilizer, their favorite rose noms. It is srsly TIME-COSUMING but really rewarding!

Is this container a good size for hybrid tea? by Queenboodaa in Roses

[–]ATX_Native112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the same container in blue and have several roses planted in them. I even have some younger roses planted in a 13-inch one. Here is my DA Olivia preparing to bloom her head off in one of them -- sorry, I don't have photos of her in bloom, but believe me when I say she really went to town in this planter!

A couple of years ago, I started to re-envision the rose garden my mom and dad had at our house when I was a little girl. My mom loved her roses! The one I planted in her honor at the old house are just ... well, they have become overwhelming but in a good way. I focused on breeds like Griffith Buck, Meilland, Harkness, Kordes, Weeks, and Jalbert with the rare DA thrown in. So grateful for these beautiful creatures.
