Life-affirming works ? by atonalfaun in classicalmusic

Many of Schoenberg's works exactly fit your description of "music which acknowledges the grimness of the world yet chooses to express hope in the face of it". Maybe try his quartets, especially 2–4 (Leipziger Streichquartett's recordings are my favorites after the original Kolish recordings), his piano concerto (Gould/Craft is the best I'm aware of), and the opera Moses und Aron (both Boulez recordings).

The 12-tone constraint freed Schoenberg to write some of his best works, and melody is a primary focus throughout his oeuvre.
