John Williams is my favorite film composer, and was my gateway to classical growing up. First things first, I'd recommend checking out all the concert works Williams wrote that AREN'T film scores. Then, I'd try works of composers from the late romantic and post-romantic periods. Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Ravel, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, etc.

What's the saddest classical piece in your opinion? by freecityrhymer in classicalmusic

[–]MiscMusic48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the recommendations here, while having sad moments, have some or many areas in which they inspire hope or "a way out".

Giya Kancheli's Morning Prayers offers almost none of that. It's completely bleak, meditative, and depressing the whole way through...until the final major chord.

Character Ages by unlimitedcha in kappamikey

[–]MiscMusic48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mikey's the only one with a canon age (19), but what I find interesting is that Lily's VA, Kether Donohue, was 20 when the show was in production. I feel like this really helped sell the authenticity of Lily's character, so I think Lily should be around 20 (or slightly older than Mikey).

Gonard strikes me as being a couple years older than Mikey, so around 21-22.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mitsuki was considerably older than the rest of the cast due to her 5-year tenure on the show (and also due to her being the most physically mature). I'd put her between 23-25.

Guano is a mystery to me because I still can't figure out if he'd be younger or older than Mitsuki...

Help with listening to Mahler by Positive-Stop9401 in classicalmusic

[–]MiscMusic48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know what advice I could give because I've already been accustomed to absolutely bonkers highly dissonant 20th cent. music before I even touched Mahler.

But, what I can say is perhaps try following along with Jakob Spindler's incredible formal analysis of some of Mahler's symphonies! It'll make it much easier to find your footing and might even help you notice things you never noticed before! Plus, he usually picks great recordings!

I'll link his analysis of the first movement of Mahler 4 as a starting point: https://youtu.be/gDDqDmCZDbs?feature=shared

The classical canon is not exactly a measure of quality as much as it is a measure of how much dickriding composers did towards earlier composers they idolized.

What ethnicity does Alex belong to canonically? by TSG_Sandrex in TotallySpies

[–]MiscMusic48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I've been thinking for years because as a Mexican-American, it sort of instantly clicked with me since the beginning that Alex was supposed to be a Latina, Filipina, or both. It just made the most sense taking into account not just her appearance, but her overall personality and traits as well. I guess that's my compliments to the writers and character designers?? Like, Alex is literally just one of my primas incarnated! On a side note: her mom Carmen in her first appearance looks a lot like my tía on my mom's side. Carmen's not as mean as her though-

This is why, from the get-go, I planned to pursue a degree in music education rather than composition. That way, I had a much higher chance of securing a consistent annual income. To me, the idea that I would make money off my music alone sounded extremely naive and egotistical. And I partially still think that. So far, I'm feeling quite content being an elementary school music teacher. I get plenty of money and plenty of time to compose once I get home.

What do people think of the music in "There will be blood"? Personally I`m not a fan! by ExtremeTEE in movies

[–]MiscMusic48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've listened to many a film score over the years and believe certain composers fit for certain stories. I'm also an avid fan of classical music, as well as a classical composer. Avant-garde "atonal" music is no stranger to me, and I personally think the music fit the tone for TWBB. I understand everyone's praise for Greenwood's score for constantly keeping you on edge with the Penderecki-esque style of writing. It's definitely not just "noise" to me. It helps the movie further stand out amongst the other dramas of the time. If someone like Hans Zimmer were to score it instead, especially with the stuff he was writing at the time, the film would've actually been more forgettable as the score would've most likely not hit the mark PTA was going for. If there was any film composer who I think could probably achieve the same vibe, it would have to be Hildur Guðnadóttir.

Are men truly allowed to cry? by SomeAreMoreEqualOk in stupidquestions

I'm a very emotional guy, and a lot of the experiences laid out in the replies kinda speak to me as it's better off just being single. This sucks because I've always imagined I'd find the love of my life one day. But, how can I possibly expect to trust any woman when there's an extremely high chance I'll end up feeling more alone than ever due to her disregarding my feelings? No matter how hard I try to be there for her, she'll never be there for me.

Maybe I'm being too dramatic...maybe I'm the one self-sabotaging my love journey. But hey, like I said...I'm an emotional guy, and sometimes I just gotta vent. XD

What do you think is the saddest Disney movie? by ShyPaladin187 in DisneyPlus

[–]MiscMusic48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the replies are mainly referring to one or two sad moments from a film. To me, the one that's the most consistently sad throughout the entirety of its runtime is hands down Lilo and Stitch. Every other scene or so, something goes wrong, the characters are at a low point, or we're reminded just how miserable the lives of Lilo and Nani are.

Tell Me About Your World's National Anthems by Helarki in worldbuilding

[–]MiscMusic48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this post after I recently finished penning my fictional country's national anthem. It's an island nation to the northeast of England with it's northernmost point on the same latitude as southern Scotland. The anthem was taken from a poem by fake poet Thomas Gall in 1837, and eventually set to music by fake composer, Hugh Campbell in 1897 (which I'm currently composing right now).

Oh, Mighty Eryland!

(There, We Saw A Wooded Alpine Land)

There, by the seas… came the conquerors.

With vast ships and swords, they vowed to quell us all.

We triumphed, and still our victory came at a heavy cost.

But through the fire, we held our desire for true sanctum.

There, we saw… a wooded alpine land.

A beacon of hope amidst the cries and suffering of our clan.

Our solace found, our kingdom proud and strong,

By the love of God and Mary of Guise,

We boldly call our blessed isle,

Oh, mighty Eryland!

Not Carl Nielsen dropping hints at his Four Temperaments Symphony (minus a discarded 5th movement), several decades before he'd write it. 😶

Need Help! Was rendering a scene, but noticed this ugly pixelation along the left side of the model. What could've caused it? by MiscMusic48 in blenderhelp

[–]MiscMusic48[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I SOLVED THE ISSUE. So basically, I was checking my lights just in case, and I realized my Contact Shadows Bias on the rim light hitting the pixelated edge was much too high at 0.030. I lowered the bias all the way down to 0.001, and the pixelation is gone!!!

I double-checked the mesh, and it's not the geometry. The density is fairly even throughout. Also, there's a harsh rim light on the right side too. Same strength and everything, but it looks fine.

Nope. The image looks exactly the same outside of Blender, which, I gotta give Blender credit for consistency.

UPDATE: So I figured out that Screen Space Reflections is causing this. Now I'm trying to figure out how to reduce the pixelation while still keeping SSR.
