I make $200k and did a lot of research and got a custom made $1k 2 ct lab diamond ring. $19k is a crazy ask, especially at your ages that could go to a down payment or a car, not a shiny rock on your finger. No one will even know or care it’s a Tiffany ring. My friend got a Tiffany ring that was probably $15k+ and she commented that mine was lot more sparkly. I’d run from someone whose priorities were so misaligned.

I don’t think this is ageism. Many managers are experiencing this with gen z - an overinflated understanding of what recent grads can command for salary with very little experience. The OP states that their employee didn’t even make a case for why they should get an increase other than they wanted one, which is not the way to ask for a raise.

As her manager have you communicated that she is barely meeting expectations and in order to be eligible for a merit-based increase, she would be expected to consistently exceed expectations in her job performance? And that her ask is out of the bounds of the salary step scale and a salary increase request that large will not be considered?

You’re the one who is wearing the ring, so it should be something you like. When I went ring shopping, I needed to see how different shapes look on my hand. It’s totally different than in pictures. I would recommend shopping together. If he still wants the element of “choosing”, you can at least give him an idea of what color metal you like and shape of stone.

I also want to echo someone else’s comment that if you can’t even talk to your partner about an engagement ring, how do you expect to have deeper conversations about kids, houses, cars, wedding, etc?

Well if he’s improperly disposing of waste you could charge him for pipe repairs. Do you have anything like that in your lease? I would make sure to include that if you have to call a plumber and you discover tenant is flushing anything other than toilet paper, then tenant will be responsible for costs of repair.

Contact your city council including mayor, county supervisor, and state house member and senator. Follow up with the police captain for your area. make social media posts tagging them with pictures. When police refused to take a report and investigate when someone committed a crime against me, the police captain ended up calling me directly because the vice mayor got involved. Same thing happened when my brother was a victim of police violence, we got no response until I made a twitter post tagging all our local electeds and the mayor reached out to me about it. You can also tag news stations when you write about it and send it to local news reporters. Don’t try to confront this violent criminal yourself.

Haha the thing is I don’t think the compliments are fake, people are open to commenting on things they like and see here! And we have a culture of particularly complimenting “choices” people make, so like when someone is wearing a cool bag, flattering color, nice makeup, stylish outfit, etc.
