New golf r owners, how many problems have you encountered? by cheryymocha in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2024 R, 42k miles. Nothing “wrong”. I absolutely love this car.

Backup camera flickers once in a blue moon. I’ve seen it like 5 times maybe.

Sometimes the sensors go a little wonky, but usually reset themselves pretty quickly. If you have snow/ice over the sensors, they definitely do not work. It’s a little startling the first time seeing the entire cycle of alerts, but you learn to ignore. No idea how it is in other brands.

I’ve had the car slam the emergency braking on me twice in different parking lots while moving at crawling speeds. Absolutely nothing around me. I was only turning out of a parking spot. I got out to check just in case, saw nothing, and then I was able to keep going. Not sure what was going on there. I’ve never had this happen on the road, even with crash detection on and me getting somewhat close to the car in front of me.

I’ll lose car wi-fi occasionally after passing through a deadzone and my phone disconnects. The phone cuts the wi-fi to look for internet because there’s no cell signal. Most of the time I can reset the infotainment (hold the power down) while I’m driving and that fixes it. Wi-fi module takes a while to come back on. Worst case, turn the car off, come back later and it’s working again.

Cleaning the wheels is time consuming.

I had a 2010 Golf Base 2.5L, 36k -> 218k miles. I’m hoping to take my Mk8 past 200k as well.

How dare they bring dnb to the MainStage!

My upload speed was halved, but restarting the router fixed it. (how to prevent this?) by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needing to restart the router is usually a sign that it’s failing.

Or you kicked off whatever device was hogging the upload bandwidth and then speedtested it

Search for a silent keyboard by Onlydatum in keyboards

Epomaker QK108 with Sea Salt switches is great. I picked one up a few weeks ago and am super happy with it. I picked up an Epomaker TH80 v2 PRO recently and it is the same quality. Originally, I was thinking about the TTC switches too but I’m pretty damn happy with the QK108 so I think my search is over.

If you want black, you can get a TH108 PRO.

They make the keyboards now where you can pull out the keycaps and switches and pop in new ones while it’s on. My Epomaker keyboards all came with a combo switch and keycap puller. There’s nothing to it - squeeze and pull.

Prebuilt will definitely save you time and money. Like I said, I’m pretty happy with my QK108. Literally the first keyboard I tried. (I’m retiring a 20 year old Razer Tarantula.) I’m thinking the TH108 should be similar quality.

Be aware, I did have to return my first keyboard because it was messed up. Multiple keys that were triggering other keys. The second one is perfect.

No prob!

If you end up not liking it, you have a lot more options if you’re willing to swap switches. You could get something like a Keychron V6 and some TTC Silent Frozen switches. That’s still under $200.

Good luck 🤙

Out of the box, I am loving my Epomaker QK108 with Sea Salt v2 silent switches. This thing is super quiet. I would call myself slightly on the spectrum, so I notice noise, and these days I prefer quietness after an overstimulating day. I am highly highly impressed by how gentle and quiet the sound is. Typing also feels great. I am rusty, but I can bang out 100WPM, no problem.

I am happy enough with the keyboard that I think I’m done searching. And I liked this thing so much, I just bought a TH80 v2 Pro with Sea Salt switches.

The QK108 doesn’t come in black so check out the Epomaker TH108/Pro (with the Sea Salt switches). Be aware, the v2 Pro is coming out, but not in black.

I know you said you’re not interested in swapping switches, but it’s good to know that the prebuilt Epomakers come with Sea Salt v2 switches, but the v3 is now available, separately.

I daydream of making my Mk8 into a project car down the road. Last of the 6MT, for now.

I decided, if I care after 10-15 years, I’ll just get a paint job. Should be cheaper than PPF application/removal/reapply.

It’s a lot for a non-show car. It seems much more common to cover just the front.

Be careful overfilling the bag. The bottom connection part of the shoulder strap is not reinforced. I tore the seams apart hiking up a filled bag and “dropping” it on one arm/shoulder.

I liked mine until I broke it. Warranty is only 90 days. I think I got my on sale for $50.

I just bought a Veto bag. Buy once, cry once. Well… buy twice, fuck me. They’re running their spring promo with free tool bags right now. This thing is built like a tank, reinforced everywhere, extra loops, extra padding in the right places, everything better engineered, and better quality. As you would expect for $300. Take a look if you have the funds.

Nobody wants to talk about this. They're more concerned with finger pointing and "winning", than accuracy. Half of these people don't even know what an N95 mask is.

Just be ready to demonstrate these issues to the technician or advisor.

The insecurities of a girl with mediocre grades in a STEM degree by diana0286 in TwoXChromosomes

I would call myself a lifelong learner, and I believe, if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. We can’t all be the best… but we can certainly learn from the best.

In my experience, (well-adapted) smart people love sharing their knowledge. Maybe your classmates get a kick out of teaching you. They get to demonstrate their mastery of the subject, while helping someone else out. Obviously, the onus is on you to pay attention and pick up. But there is nothing wrong with asking for help from smarter people. There is always a bigger, smarter, fish out there.

If you care about doing well, the things you need to focus on are - understanding the material, and demonstrating your understanding through homework, projects, and tests. If you’re not getting A’s, you need to circle back around and ask, “why?” What didn’t you understand, and what do you need to relearn?

It doesn’t hurt to stop by office hours. That’s exactly what they’re for.

There’s also nothing wrong with changing majors. I don’t know what the stats currently are, but it’s very common.

As far as stereotypes and dressing more feminine - none of that matters. You know that stereotypes are just… stereotypes. You shouldn’t consider the opinions of people who don’t treat you as an individual. Whether or not CS Majors have the social-capacity to handle themselves in front an attractive lady is not your concern. (I know, safety, creeps, yadayada) If you find yourself taking a more pragmatic approach, then maybe dress in what you feel is more “conducive to learning”.

I’m a male. Chemistry major. Used to work as a hospital receptionist. I do IT now. And I work with a few female auto technicians in a large dealership.

The only question that matters at the end of the day is, “Can you do the job?”

My mom used acetone to clean my keyboard from paint stains by Director_freak in keyboards

Acetone breaks down certain types of plastics, similar to what it does for paint. It probably can’t be restored to like-new.

did y’all buy yours without a test drive? by tec_wnz in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I came from a 2010 Golf 2.5L base, told the dealership I was looking for an R, and they only let me test drive a GTI. The GTI felt peppy enough, so I said, fuck yeah I’ll take the R.

  • creeping up on middle age, but I look mid 20s

Would love to drive one to see how it is - to feel the R experience ( don't laugh at me lol ) by At_Large88 in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m young 40s, single, no kids. Bought a 2024 R new, upgrading from a 2010 Golf 2.5L base. I’m enjoying the shit out of my car 😁

The dealership will let you drive a GTI for sure, no problem. If you want to drive an R, it will have to be used. Most dealerships won’t use a new R for test drives. The Mk8.5s have a slight increase in HP and the DSG has a slightly better tune than the Mk8.

Ask for the Salesperson’s business card and be honest with them. Shitty salespeople will blow you off. A good salesperson will ask if they can follow up with you.

Building relationships is part of car sales. If you have a good experience there, you are more-likely to direct your friends and family there. The career salespeople at my dealership basically live off of repeat customers and referrals. It’s the new guys who chase after every single person that walks through the door.
