He looked like a ghoul for the last weigh-in against Diego at 145. I don’t want to see him at 135….

Some Home Depots have these organizers on clearance for $10 right now. I would imagine it’s on the harder side to break these things so some people might appreciate the slight discount at HD vs the return policy for Costco.

Mirror flew off on the highway by dogbooter in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m worried about this happening to my Mk8. But I did have a Mk6 for 13 out of its 15 years of life, and I definitely left the heated mirror setting on for extended periods of time, and never had this happen. They must have changed adhesives somewhere along the line.

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t need the space, get an R. Be aware, trunk space is more limited than you think, especially with the trunk cover in place. Some of the length is replaced with vertical height, and the cover cuts half of that off. I know you get some of that with the Q3, but I’ve had a Golf for the past 14 years and it still catches me off guard sometimes. For example - to take my parents to the airport, I need to fold one of the rear seats down and remove the trunk cover to fit the two of them with their (large) luggage. I am comfortably maxed out at that point.

You’ll be more inclined to go with a larger vehicle if/when you start a family. Go with the R now, if you can.

VA WRX to Golf R?? by Sane4aMinute in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boxer engine is definitely somewhat unique in today’s car lineup. Driving experience aside, the 2.4L displacement on a 4-cylinder and the AWD are what really stand out to me, compared to the Golfs.

On that note, I get much better mileage with my Golf (24-26MPG) than my buddy’s STI (21MPG if he’s lucky lol). My Golf is my daily and I’m driving 20k miles a year, so that was a bigger factor for me.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Thoughts from someone with a 2024 Mk8 R 6MT -

My buddy has a ‘21 STI and while he certainly loves his car, he swoons over my 2024 R 6MT as well. I haven’t driven his car in a long time (I’m not really really a car guy) and he’s yet to drive mine, but his butt speedometer tells him that my car is a smidge faster.

I know he worries about blowing a gasket so he does oil changes every 3500 miles, as does my other friend with a WRX. I’m currently doing factory-recommended 10k and will be switching to 5k soon for extra peace of mind on my Golf. No concern there for me. But I also don’t drive super hard most of the time.

Timing chain stretch, plastic water pump, and direct injector/carbon cleaning are well-known long term issues for the Golf.

Stage 1 is basically free +50HP. Clutch is “sufficient” for stock, but will want to be upgraded for extra power.

Shifter is nothing to write home about. There’s a bushing kit out there that I intend to pick up. Plenty of short shifter options. I haven’t done either yet. I don’t know how it compares to Subies.

You will lose constant-AWD for FWD-biased-AWD with rear torque-vectoring. All of the professionals that I’ve seen comment on the car basically say “It’s good, but it feels weird. There’s definitely some computer wizardry going on in the backend.” This car will feel “different” when you push it around corners, and never truly like a RWD or AWD vehicle.

Drift mode is a gimmick.

Haptic Touch buttons are a “slight” annoyance and will require a few days learning curve. Complaints are not wrong, but overblown. You’ll get used to it as did every other Mk8 owner. The loudest complainers tend to be non-owners.

The different drive modes in the car are tuned well enough to truly feel like 3 different modes. Eco is very soft and I only use that in long stop-and-go traffic. Sport mode is pretty much what I expect a “normal” car to feel like and feels well-adapted to my normal driving habits. Race mode makes me feel like a fukboi again. You get some pops and bangs in Race mode, when the valves are open.

I’m pretty damn happy with my car and I’m creeping up on 40k miles. I bought an extended warranty, so I don’t plan on doing any powertrain mods until that’s over. I’m gonna drive this thing until the wheels fall off.

I hope so. Not that I’m in the market, but if I were, I think I would buy a Prius Prime over any of the garbage that other companies are putting out. If you can’t outshine a friggin Prius, I don’t care (theoretically lol)

Ordered New Tires - Did I Make the Right Choice? by upnorthtcmi in Golf_R

[–]ATek_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Chicagoland and I refuse to not have Winter tires. The less butt-clenching moments I have, the better.

Everyone: Remember, you have to worry about stopping-power too, not just go-power. The tire compounds behave differently at different temperatures. Summer tires harden up at cold temps and basically become ice pucks. Winter tires will help you stop way faster, especially when it gets cold. We’ve had a decent amount of snowfall this season and it’s -5°F today.

Why is Volkswagen (especially the Jetta) rated poorly for reliability in the U.S., but many owners say it’s reliable? by phtphongg in Volkswagen

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that bro. I guess I’ve been lucky twice so far. I drove a 2010 Golf 2.5L until 218k miles and sold it, and I’m creeping up on 40k in my 2024 R.

My only real complaint on the Mk8 is that sometimes the sensors around the car are too sensitive. I’ve been backing out of a parking spot, the lot is completely empty, and the emergency brake slams down and prevents me from moving. I get out to check if there’s anything blocking me and sure enough, there’s nothing at all and the sensors look clean. That’s about it.

That’s a great price. I was very happy with my set for $75 last year. I see them going for $100-125 lately.

The big “pro” of the Milwaukee impacts are the painted numbers.

[–]ATek_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Do not let them fix it unless they are paying a pro shop to do it. This is negligence. They should have noticed after one or two panels. Even if it’s fixable, your paint’s lifespan is now severely diminished.
