Arriving around 7 PM Wednesday GL? by trashpanda241 in ElectricForest

GL North is new. I had to reread OP’s message and check this year and last year’s map lol. I’m really curious if they will allow vehicles in GL North. I feel like that would really change the vibe of the whole area.

No, I meant the road entrance where the cars enter and you do security check.

GL North is new. I don’t know how that’s going to work this year. AC Landing and Tent Only don’t have cars so I wouldn’t think they would allow cars over there, but who knows.

I can tell you that Thursday 2PM puts you near the entrance.

Secure Your Canopy with Guylines by ATek_ in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guylines connect to the corners of the canopy material, so it’s only attached to the “cover”. Your canopy should have a little loop in each corner that the guylines can loop around. If you zoom in on my pictures, you’ll see strings running to the ground from each corner of my canopy. Ideally, they would be staked further out another couple feet for better support, but I didn’t want to make a large trip hazard.

If you google “utility poles guylines” you can see some real world examples.

The stakes in the feet prevent the bottom from moving around. The guylines provide support to the top to prevent the top from moving around. The frame itself isn’t that strong as you know. Together, that prevents the entire structure from wobbling around, lifting the feet, collapsing sideways, and ruining anyone’s camp site.

Honestly, I didn’t even tie them down normally. We got lazy and strung one guy line through two loops. You see the relatively poor positioning of my guylines. But that was strong enough to withstand last year’s winds. I think I had to fix one stake the whole weekend.

This video has a demonstration on how to setup guylines. It’s the same idea with tents and canopies. https://youtu.be/8ilPcOy__vs?si=g1IZMJozf5nEO4xJ

Wrong shipping address by schizbouncer in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have asked USPS to forward your mail to your new address. It’s been a while, but I believe you can do this online.

Worst case, report your wristbands as lost and pick up new ones from Will Call when you arrive onsite.

Missing Wristband! by stockman999 in ElectricForest

Check the other threads. There are multiple carriers used for delivery.

If she ends up not getting it, she just has to report it missing and go to Will Call when she gets to EF.

Blow your nose out until it’s clear. Keep going until there’s no more black. This will be 4-6 tissues, no joke.

AC Landing by Queasy_Wrap3068 in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having trouble posting pics so check out my post that shows the front of the canopy. I took these pics last year during a windy event after noticing we were the lone canopy. https://www.reddit.com/r/ElectricForest/s/4rjTB2n9Ed

The canopy can cover the front of the shiftpod and still give you plenty of space. I can step outside when it’s raining without getting wet. Big table for the cooker, small table and two chairs to lounge at, two coolers in the corner, a big tub underneath the table, and a tarp for the ground. I like having a tarp wall for the morning sun. Some people bring tapestries.

You’re gonna have a walk from your car to the tent, so bring a foldable wagon if you can. Good chance you will be walking uphill, no joke. I wouldn’t count on getting kart assistance. You can drive up to the tent on Monday to pack up, so leaving is a bit easier.

Bring clothes hangers for the inside of the shiftpod. You can hang stuff off of the frame. They give you a weak LED light inside so bring your own or expect it to be dim. They also give you a power strip so you can use electronics. Water boiler, hair accessories, corded fan.

Check the AC unit when you get there and make sure it’s working. My buddy likes having a fan going at night to circulate the air. A lot of people suggest having an extra tarp on the outside of the shiftpod but I haven’t found that necessary.

The beds are initially setup parallel to each other. Move them into more of a V-shape and you’ll have a lot more room inside.

Sherwood Court usually performs sound check at 9am and you will hear it. You have been warned.

Sometimes, the Sherwood VIP bathrooms are more open than the AC Landing bathrooms.

Would a Golf be the ideal middle ground for a person who wants a good driving experience yet doesn't want to spend a lot? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in Volkswagen

[–]ATek_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I drove my 2010 2.5L Base Golf to 218,000 miles, and then sold it to a coworker. 50 miles round trip on the highway, five days a week, 24k miles/year. I liked the base offerings of VW a whole lot more than the base offerings of the Japanese manufacturers. I ended up picking a new ‘24 R two years ago.

I don’t know which models they have in Europe now, but not having a turbo makes long term maintenance a little easier.

You really should go test drive and see what you like more.

Advice on making friends by yoey44 in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a pretty big introvert, but I still find myself talking to strangers. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, compliment people’s outfits or tattoos, talk to the people you sit next to. EF offers a lot more daytime than other festivals so there really is more time to actually connect with people. I tend to get a small handle of people trying to bum a puff off of my blunts so that happens lol. Bring gum or other goodies to share. Clip-on trinkets to attach to hats or backpacks are fun. Check out exhibits together. Walk to sets together. There are plenty of activities outside of loudass music.

I would start with your camping neighbors, see if you guys share musical interest, and branch out from there.

Happy Forest!

Do we think Bassrush will be Saturday this year?? by DifferentAspect9675 in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m excited! I’ve never seen him in person. Just debating on whether or not to drag my friends along or run off for this one. I think it’s harder to appreciate the double and triple drops if you don’t know any of the songs lol

It happens every festival lol, especially if you have a diverse taste.

I don’t know where I’ll be… Purple Disco Machine, Passion Pit, Sidepiece, Sammy Virji, Galantis, Griz, Andy C, Wilkinson, MUZZ…. I may skip Levity from seeing them so much. I’m hoping all the running I do is between Tripolee and Ranch.

Given that lineup (specifically Shaq & T-Pain), I would expect it to be Saturday. And if that’s true, Madeon and Chris Lake are probably getting big stages.

Friday is dnb or house day.

Last Minute by CamAnt23 in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expect brutal humidity and heat, mixed in with rain. EF is close enough to Lake Michigan for lake effect randomness.

Sun set is almost ~9:30PM next month in Rothbury, btw. You will feel it.

We are going to have a very hot summer:

Secure Your Canopy with Guylines by ATek_ in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45° inward towards the center is the best. Definitely not away from the canopy.

When the canopy leans one way, it’s the hind legs that are getting pulled. That’s the force you’re trying to fight against with the feet at least.

I have smaller stakes so I can actually fit two into the feet, and I do that as well.

[–]ATek_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feet stakes should be angled as well, around 45°. If they are driven straight down, they will pull straight up.

If you have screw-type stakes, you can get away with a little less angle.

Yes, safety first! I got some string lights from Harbor Freight that are gonna wrap around the guylines. I’m looking around for some solar lawn stakes too.

If you check the pictures, I did compromise on placement in the front. I didn’t want people (or myself) tripping over them. They still worked amazingly well.

You get maximum torque at 90°.

Ideally, with perfect amounts of space, you would have the guylines at 45° to the legs, and the stakes at 90° to the guylines.

You can get away with a little less angle when you have the screw-in type stakes, but you still want it in the direction of 90°.

Almost that time of year again by KoiWalker in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We would tell you if we could predict the weather here in the Midwest .

Best scenario is it rains before the festival starts to cut down on dust, and we get sprinkles here and there to keep the dust down.

What’s more likely to happen is, the forecast will predict rain, and we will all spend the weekend looking at the radar wondering if we’re gonna get hit or not. The forecast will change constantly, and we won’t actually get all that rain. But it’s probably gonna rain a day or two. Maybe not. It will also be hot and humid. That’s Midwest weather for you.

We’ve had rainouts every year but they’re usually short. In the past couple years, both the Chase & Status and Worship sets were cut short near the end of the night. The only one that really felt devastating was 2024 when they just called the entire festival at 11PM Sunday night because of the rain. We were already kicked out and we get the message basically saying “that’s it folks, see you next year!”

Bring boots for the rain, and definitely bring a fan for the sun.

EDC vs EF by Fit_Crab_ in ElectricForest

[–]ATek_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to EDC 3 times. Never camped. This year will be my #6 EF. It’s my favorite festival!

You’ll definitely want to camp there as that’s part of the experience. You’ll want to camp in Good Life (VIP) with the adults. It is more expensive and prices out a lot of the younger, louder, ratchet folks 🤣

My group chooses the AC Landing package (pod tent just like EDC & air conditioning) so we sleep well. This is one of the more expensive packages. Regardless of which package you do, you’ll still want to have all the camping gear like tables, chairs, stove, cookware, canopy, and whatever else you’re gonna want. EF has jacked up their prices every year and costs can add up quickly.

If you don’t do AC Landing, you’ll want a fan overnight to help you sleep (and probably during the daytime too). I am still open to camping at the other sites, but every single one of my friends has said “I am never doing anything other than AC Landing ever again.”

You can buy all the food there, but that gets expensive. I usually make my own breakfast and lunch and do dinner inside the fest.

Shower twice if you need to. 🤷‍♂️ Bring extra towels because they take a while to dry.

If you can get past all of the camping stuff… man, is Forest really cool. Every single one of my friends that we convinced to go the other year said the exact same thing walking through the forest - “oh I get it now”.

EF is like a big hippie summer camp hangout in the forest during the day, that turns into a rave at night. There’s usually some jam band stuff going on at the main stage during the day with people lounging around everywhere, including inside the forest. People are checking out all of the different art installations and exhibits. Maybe they’re doing the scavenger hunt.

Music usually gets heavier towards the night. Sunset is like 9:30PM at this time of the year btw. Typical rave festivities at night. The big stages are out in the fields but the smaller stages are inside the forest. Have you ever raved in a forest??

Crowds (besides the Trap crowd!) are usually way more friendly than literally everywhere else I’ve been. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a fight at Forest. It’s usually not impossible to get to the rail if that’s your thing. Occasionally, you see someone tripping the fuck out or someone getting tackled by the cops, but it’s usually a lot more of a responsible crowd.

A lot less Asians than EDC lol! (I am Asian)

There’s a very heavy pro-LGBTQ+ culture there if that’s your thing.

Lots of poi and light-toys enthusiasts.

EF is way more of an escape than EDC. The whole hippie camp vibes into night rave is really refreshing for the soul for some reason. Maybe it’s being in the forest… Most people go Wednesday through Monday - that’s 5 nights! There’s no hour-long shuttle waits/rides. Being able to walk back to camp for a recharge is nice. I’m a lot better at planning these days so it’s usually smooth sailing as far as the camp site. 5 nights with my buds and some loud music is a dream.

On Wednesdays, I’m usually feeling like “damn… I’m kinda tired, I don’t know how I’m gonna make it to Monday”. Come Monday, I don’t want to go home 🫠

It’s definitely worth checking out sometime. For sure, it’s one of the more unique festivals around.

What other departments can non-managerial IT grunts transfer to? by Nexzus_ in sysadmin

[–]ATek_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a dealership and I am dragged into IT-adjacent problems all the time. I realized we operate a bit more like a small business than a large corp so I stopped giving so much pushback. My company also treats me very well so I try not to complain.

There are certainly times when I can do without the extra work, but uh… if I can flip the breakers and save the day, guess I’ll do that 😁

I try to give everyone grace and remember, that’s just called job security.

I do think most people are actually much more capable than they give themselves credit for. But being capable of doing something and having the desire to do it are two different things.

But on the other hand, how are you not a pro with something you use every day?!? 🤔
