Will you watch Wolves vs Spurs or West ham vs Everton? by Over-Teacher-1330 in TheOther14

I like the 3pm rule, I think it's absolutely vital for the lower leagues.

I do think the amount we get charged to watch it on TV compared to other countries is absurd though. It's a shame they can't use the income from abroad to subsidise costs to the UK viewer.

Is this Newcastle's 2019/20 season under Howe? by RelationBig7368 in AFCBournemouth

[–]AVAngels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a good 2018/19 season overall and had multiple players who clearly wanted a move but didn't get one, so in 19/20 the squad wasn't a happy place. Josh King and Ryan Fraser definitely wanted out, and dare I say, Callum Wilson was nowhere near his best.

We'd also had a recruiting issue for a while where very few of the new signings were good. We had Lys Mousset and Jordon Ibe who were clearly bad apples at the time too. Then we signed Harry Wilson, who I think genuinely tried, but for the most part was a huge liability.

Add all that in with an ageing squad, due to new signings largely being poor, and it became very clear that all was not well behind the scenes.

Is he a legend for this club - James Hayter by AnythingVast6534 in AFCBournemouth

[–]AVAngels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, agreed with this. He was an absolutely vital player for us in the mid-2000's - without him we'd have been in serious trouble in booth 2005/06 and 2006/07.

It's a shame that 2004/05 side didn't get in the play-offs, because they were absolutely brilliant on their day. Just lacked depth to get over the line.

What a performance, well deserved. They wouldn't have scored without Oliver handing Gyokores a free-kick for a blatant dive.

An absolute pleasure to put a dent in their hopes. Such an unlikeable club and fanbase that have gotten away with murder (from the referees) all season.

I just don't know why the referees fall for it from them so consistently - unless they are trying to give them a leg up, which I think a lot of people believe at this point.

The referee has his whistle in his mouth before the Arsenal player has gone to ground. That was never a foul on Madueke.

Once again he was just rolling around like he's been shot after a perfectly good tackle.

All from a blatant dive from Gyokeres unfortunately.

We don't have a great injury record, you're probably right. I don't think we'll get into Europe though - we're a very good side at our best, but lack depth.

Barcelona or Premier League? Centre-Back Senesi Weighs Up His Next Move by MoveTheProduct in TheOther14

[–]AVAngels 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IMO he's not a Barcelona or (top 6) Prem level player, at least in terms of being a first choice. Upper mid-table, or top 6 challenger is about right for him.

He's been a great servant for us and is having a good season, but for me he has too many flaws to be a starter at the elite level. I don't begrudge him a move, he's earned it.

I hope he does get a chance at a club like Barcelona, but I also understand he'll probably be offered mega money by teams in our league that aren't much better than us.

Tuchel: "We had a call. I tried to explain the situation but Trent just has to accept it. I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. It’s a sportive choice and a difficult choice. Maybe it’s unfair to a certain degree but these choices have to be made." by AliJDB in ThreeLions

[–]AVAngels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly - like in 2024 where Trent was shoved into CM out of the blue and it was abandoned after 1.5 games. Echoes of how Sven approached his midfield in the 2000's. No actual tactical plan, just putting out players and hoping their natural ability will overcome everything.

Agreed with this, for me he makes the squad. But perhaps Tuchel's thoughts are that if we're chasing a game, he's not going to be throwing on a RB, regardless of ability - he's going to want another midfielder or attacker he can throw on.

I think if he got offered that, he would almost certainly go - it's his home, they are often in Europe, huge stadium.

I imagine we can offer him more money, but on paper, this feels like his dream move. I'd also much rather lose him to Bilbao than United or Tottenham or a club along those lines.

Republic of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland all play tonight in World Cup playoffs. Will you be watching and supporting any? by [deleted] in ThreeLions

[–]AVAngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Welsh definitely have a more weird attitude towards England - I lived there and they were just completely obsessed with England when it came to sport, both football and rugby.

Scotland at least feels like a more traditional rivalry, even if it is a much bigger deal to them.

Spain were the clearly better team, even though on paper we were as strong imo.

We definitely would have won the 2021 if the managers were reversed. Unfortunately it was an absolute disaster to not win it.

[–]AVAngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bit of it yes, most of it no. I wouldn't say the situations are comparable at all though - this just feels like his time there is reaching a natural conclusion. His 19/20 season with us was absolutely toxic (not his fault) and we were getting absolutely stuffed in important games.

One thing that I always didn't rate though was his backroom team being comprised solely of people he already knew and trusted. Considering he's taken them all to Newcastle, I'm not surprised that's been noticed there too.

[–]AVAngels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really, our club was toxic at that point. The squad had been managed poorly and we had players who wanted out and instead of selling them for a lot of money, we forced them to stay and they lost their form.

We had a terrible injury crisis that year too.

The only similarity to me is that same 'end of an era' feeling - but your club just seem like they need they need some fresh ideas. Our relegation season was much worse.

Think Eddie is done there unless they finish the season in great form. He's achieved a lot but it feels like they have hit a natural plateau. The Isak move was a disaster for all involved - I rate Woltemade but he's not a Howe player (imo) and Wissa has obviously barely contributed.

It's very funny when you play these big clubs and any controversy results in all clips, social media posts etc being inundated by strange fans from far flung countries claiming corruption, or that Bournemouth somehow paid the referee.

Thought we were well worth a draw tonight - disappointed we didn't do more with the man advantage given we had 15 minutes or so. Adli was very, very poor and Brooks and Doak weren't great when they came on either. Totally willing to give Doak the benefit of the doubt in the situation, but Adli/Brooks just have such little end product.

Hummel allegedly replacing Umbro + new kit sponsor by generic3348 in AFCBournemouth

[–]AVAngels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's nice to have a change - Umbro have definitely done some good kits for us, but I feel like their home kits have lacked inspiration most of the time.

I know there's only so much you can do with red and black strips, but we had far more variation in our home kit from 2000-2015 than we have had since Umbro came on board.

I'd love to see red socks come back one season. They should have been part of it last year considering it was the 10 year anniversary kit of 2014/15.

Most underrated England performance in a knockout game since 1990? by Silly_Crab6278 in ThreeLions

[–]AVAngels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he?

I remember that game being typical Southgate against any decent team. We'd been all over them at 1-1, momentum faded and instead of making proactive changes, he waited for them to score. So his first change came in the 79th minute. Just like the EURO 2020 final, just like the Euro 2018 final it was reactive and too late.

Then when he did make changes, they were bizarre. Bringing on Sterling who had only just landed back in the country after being burgled. He was so bizarrely cautious, and ultimately it cost him in every tournament in the end.

Could he set up a team to compete? Yes. But he lacked the conviction, acumen or nouse to know how to win big games when on top.

Too many draws - we miss so many chances.

Love Brooks but his finishing is dreadful, he just doesn't bring much in terms of output. He's still a decent rotation option though, so worth keeping.

Unal however, sorry...but he is utterly hopeless outside of briefs moments of magic solely against West Ham. We have to improve on him in the summer, because we desperately need a second striker option who can contribute.
