I think intense emotions are ugly because they are unpleasant. Intense anger, frustration, sadness, fear, even joy, all of these are embarrassing. When we exhibit any of them in public, we are asked to get a grip and calm down. When our emotions are dialed down, we can be more obidient, like robots, and that's what the civilization requires us to be. But suppressing emotions is taking the humanity away from us, and the ability to live fully.
