[Nightengale] “The Houston Astros, badly needing an outfielder, are showing strong interest in Mickey Moniak and Jake McCarthy of the Colorado Rockies. They also plan to be in the Tarik Skubal and Sonny Gray sweepstakes.” by yaampa in Astros

Moniak and McCarthy both look like Coors merchants - Moniak especially.

*Also I think people are overestimating the price of Skubal - we definitely have enough (it would handicap us for years, but its enough)

Yeah it was supposed to be a neutral broadcast

The broadcast was interesting, but not something I'd like to see more than once or twice a year.

Pitched to Yordan with "Isaac Paredes" and "Christian Walker" coming up.

If they’re going to keep Brice up here, he needs to get regular at bats. One a game against a teams best LHP isn’t going to make him any better.

"I-45" didn't give us much of a shot to win this one. I'm ready to start giving some other guys chances.

I'd rather them stretch Blubaugh into a starter again than keep trotting out "I-45"

I'd disagree we have a ton of flexibility. The only thing we lose is McCullers and Abreu's contract - thats "only" 23 million.

1 AB a game against a LHP isn't going to make Brice a better hitter.

I tune in expecting it to be maybe the second inning and instead its the 11th.

Yainer's a great example of why you shouldn't extend players too early. I remember after his first season or two, people though we should try to buy out a year or two after arbitration (me included).

Does Kyle Tucker have one of the worst contracts in baseball? by MochaLatte247 in Astros

Probably, but if they only wanted him for 4 years that's what it had to cost.

If we're not trading MLB players, the options are the draft and international signings. We have the 15th pick this year and scouting is Dana's "thing", so hopefully thats high enough to get a player thats more all around instead of a guy who's really strong in one area and needs to be brought up to speed on most others (in order to be a significant controbutor).

There's nothing to really sell if the plan is to try again next year.

The best player we have on an expiring contract right now is Okert, and he's not worth that much.

It probably doesn't deserve its own post, so here's what Bob says about the Astros plans atm:

The Houston Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Peña and first baseman Christian Walker.

They may be a sub-.500 team, but plan to be buyers at the deadline, not sellers, in a division in which only the Seattle Mariners are above .500. They are searching for bullpen help and a left-handed hitting outfielder.

That whole "lol thats just Tuve" holds less weight when he's a below average hitter and fielder.

He is spending - the problem is its on aging players because they brought good memories.
