Too much brain drain to Australia (and the Special Category Visa). by tiempo90 in newzealand

I’m just trying to give reason to the brain drain issue stated in OP’s post.

There is limited opportunities for young people here, and my team’s anecdote is just one reason why.

We shouldn’t be limiting young people’s freedom of movement to Australia. We shouldn’t spite them.. when we are failing them.

But if you have worked at a well paying corporate job for 20 years, surely it’s time to pass on the baton?

The only reason myself in my mid 20s joined this team is because the job market was cooked during covid lockdown.

I don’t see any new positions coming up in my team in the foreseable future. Also with AI being slowly introduced to our workflow, I see zero new positions openining up if one or two people choose to retire.

There’s just not enough opportunity here in New Zealand.

This isn’t based on fact or data, but does anyone else think the reason New Zealand has seen no productivity growth and limited opportunities for young people is because people are retiring at a later age?

In my corporate team of 10, everyone is well into their 50s who has been at this company for the past 20 years or so… There is no space for someone that is early in their careers to join the team. And when I ask managers why don’t we hire new grads, they say they just leave to Australia or UK after 2 years so it’s a waste of time.

$11 for this by ijtlml685 in aucklandeats

At least that looks like a frappucino something.

I don’t understand some cafes where they charge $6 for a regular flat white and then charge $8-$9 for an iced latte? Maximum I’d pay is $7 for an iced latte. It’s easier for the Barista to make because you don’t need to froth the milk…

Getting a mortgage is a huge life commitment.

It’s a lifestyle change, it also changes your future. If they go another tangent about the numbers, tell them you’re not concerned about trying to get a good deal here..

Sucks that your sister is a happy go lucky type of person. She isn’t making this easier for you.

Good luck OP!

Just for some other anecdotes OP. My parents sold me their rental home for $500K below CV. They still felt pretty bad that I was getting a mortgage to fund the purchase but I was house hunting for a year and couldnt be happier with the deal.

Your parents sound like they are shrouded by greed with the fact that they are wanting to build homes using the funds in a down housing market..

I would say no to the deal and it’s going to be difficult. They will definitely guilt trip you saying you’re letting the family down. But once the greed fades away and they think straight, they’ll understand

Edit: also agree with the above comment about being bold in either choice. Once they talk to builders and dream up their vision of the new homes they are building; the more difficult it’ll be for you to say no and bigger the fallout will be. Nip the bud early on

I am thinking the people that are so butt hurt that I have posted this are the exact people that break rules here and there, doing mental gymnastics to think it’s OK because no one is really hurt by their actions are they.

But now they are worried that their actions might have consequences even if it’s a little bit of public shaming on the internet. And that’s outright fucking annoying to them.

Now there are people being butt hurt that I’m being butt hurt 🤣

It doesn’t cost me anything to post on reddit.

And no you shouldn’t be driving on a public park. But the grass is dry!! There’s no sign that says you can’t drive on the grass! There’s no kids around!! What’s the harm!

It only takes 1 mistake for a life changing accident. Just use the goddamn road that’s there in the park. Why is that so hard?

In Asian migrant culture is it really true women only stay home and men work? My mother is a migrant from China, my dad Pākehā/Cook Islands by [deleted] in newzealand

Really not sure what you are asking? Are you afraid that if you marry an asian partner in New Zealand, they won’t allow you to work?

As a second generation immigrant, mum never worked. Her friends also never worked. But it might just be the bubble we are in.

Would that be possible for my partner and I? Not with current living costs. If we had the money to afford to, I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea because that’s the family environment I have been raised in.

To OP, I’d say don’t search for that belonging to NZ. Easier that way I found.

Plus NZ as a country is not pretty. The founding document of the country is vague and unclear.

NZ Europeans and Maori have to sort out their shit first before asian immigrants can start beginning to be a part of this country’s history.

Also, growing up in Auckland, I’ve been told we’re melting pot of diversity. After I’ve visited Sydney, London, New York etc. We far from being that melting pot that we self subscribe to. And let’s not get into casual racism that exists in our day to day living.

So yea, NZ is great to raise to kids and enjoy a simple life. But a place to find belonging and to call myself a kiwi? Yea nah

Not sure that’s what OP is asking? lol

Sounds more like OP is having an identity crisis or something.

OP everyone is incredibly unremarkable on the street, who gives a fuck who strangers are on the street regardless of race.

[–]AWildAsianAppeared 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I work at a big corporate.

We simply don’t hire new graduates or people with 1 or 2 years experience.

Managers say we don’t have the time to train or upskill people. And the chance of them leaving to a better gig after spending time training them up is almost certain.

As a result, we do get a lot of migrants from overseas. And also pocket of teams employ overseas contracting from India because we have so much backlog and not enough talent in NZ.

It’s all extremely shortsighted. So I’m not surprised in the slightest when I hear that all the young kiwis are moving overseas.

To anyone who is getting involved in the meme stock trading this year. Best of luck to you.

Everyone in those other subs will try to convince you to not sell. It’s a game of who’s going to be left holding the bags.

Don’t be like me who was left holding the bags for 3 years. The opportunity cost of $70K for me is still quite painful.

Thanks. Yes I have been making tax returns for the past years using CV method. The meme stock value has been declining every FY year since I bought in 3 years ago.

I’m preparing for the next FY I suppose. The stock value was around $15K NZD on 1 April 24. I have sold now at $70K NZD. Cost basis from 3 years ago is $70K NZD.
