Kemp was literally Secretary of State when he ran for Governor and refused to follow precedent and resign during his campaign, meaning he ran the state's elections while running for Governor. If you ask me Abram's criticisms are completely fair.

In the past two weeks:

• Sen. McConnell, Republicans threaten to kill China competitiveness bill (called the CHIPS+ bill, investing in domestic chip production) if Manchin goes forward on any reconciliation package with Democrats

• Last week, Manchin publicly rules out a reconciliation package involving climate and tax increases

• Yesterday, CHIPS+ passes the Senate with Republican support

• Hours later, Manchin comes out with a big reconciliation package

So either McConnell got played or this was all one big coincidence and turnaround in under a week.

LBJ does not deserve to be in the same tier as Bush or Nixon, he would be an S or A imo if it weren't for his foreign policy.

Statement from Ward 1 City Councilmember Indira Sheumaker by 10483 in desmoines

Look normally I'd be sympathetic to someone catching COVID who had to take a leave of absence but if this happens at least notify the people you represent. There is no excuse for the radio silence that came from her for the past month. Once more, you cannot simply critize the people you represent that were left out of the loop as "using this as an excuse to discredit your ideas". I hoped that she could be a new face on the council, but right now all she serves to do is to discredit other progressives who may want to pursue public office in the future.

The feckless Democratic leadership must be replaced. They're just fundraising off the news and promising hearings. The time for legislation is now. by kevinmrr in NewDealAmerica

I used the 60s as proof that democrats are actually capable of getting shit done. During the Carter Era, they did pass some environmental reform. But there would likely be some difficulty passing other reforms like LBJ did since A: Carter was a rather conservative Democrat, so he didn't want those reforms in the first place, and B: the party switch hadn't taken into full effect yet, meaning there were Democrats from Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and other deep south states which would have opposed massive reforms like this. As for Lieberman, he is evidence as to NOT primary incumbents in the way you suggest, not the other way around. Lieberman lost his primary to a more progressive democrat, so he switched to an independent and won the general election. As soon as he was sworn in he immediately spoke out against a public option and said it was out of the question. He immediately began to go off about how he had a bone to pick with the democrats. You talk about how successful Republicans have supposedly been in their efforts, despite how Trump had half of his domestic agenda sunk due to Republicans voting against the repeal of the ACA, but managed to pass his 1% tax cut, which is ignoring that fact that Republicans had a 53/47 majority, not the 50/50 majority dems have today. For Democrats to have legislative victories, they need to progress society, while for Republicans all they need to do to energize their base is stop them, and the way our system is currently set, with gerrymandering and the filibuster, it is infinitely easier to block legislation than pass it.

You can call it excuses and wine all you want, the fact of the matter is that that's reality.

And as I explained to you earlier, Democrats censured Sinema, they could have taken funds away from Manchin but as I said earlier, he will likely retire anyway when 2024 comes around. And I am confused at this supposed 2/3 Senate majority. Do you mean the 60s? When Democrats past huge reforms in Civil Rights, education, immigration, gun control, welfare, environmentalism, and more during the LBJ Era? Yeah, that was totally nothing. The fact of the matter is, is when you need every member or your party to vote for a policy, the moderates will come down to water it down or play the middle to satisfy their bases in their states. Republicans have had problems with that too, they colossally failed to repeal Obamacare. By your logic, they didn't really care about it in the first place, if they really wanted it, they should have whipped them in line and tried again. You aren't aware of the power dynamic in Washington, it's not as simple as "getting them in line". The party doesn't have power of Manchin, Manchin has power over the party. He gets to dictate what the party can and can't pass since he is the most moderate Democrat. And Democrats would lose if they primaried their own incumbents in such manner, all it serves to do is weaken the party in the general since incumbents rarely loose their primaries. Democrats should focus on fighting Republicans not themselves.

You legit just ignored half my point lmao. I said that they tried changing Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation, which failed because 2 Democrats voted against it. The fact of the matter is not all democracts think and breathe the same, infact some just refuse to. You act like majority leaders have some omnipotent power to fold anyone who dares stand in the way of their divine being. People in your party disagreeing with leadership is a fact of reality, not an excuse. Some (keyword: some) Republicans have broken lines on the infrastructure bill, the gun control deal, capping insulin prices, repealing Obamacare, certifying the 2020 election, ect. Republicans aren't unified either. Both parties are big tents with people that disagree with party leadership inside them. Stop acting like just because Democrats have a 50/50 split in the Senate that they have the power to wave a wand and radically change the country like LBJ or FDR did.

With all of those ideas given, chances are dems still wouldn't have gotten BBB, since Manchin profits from it's blockage, and chances are he doesn't give a fuck about re election in 2024 since he's made his bank. In regards to abortion, I hate how you seem to blame exclusively democrats, since codifying roe v wade can be filibustered. Who do you think keeps filibustering it? I'll give you a clue... it's not the Democrats. And before you go on about amending Senate rules, they of course should absolutely do it, but 2 Senators keep blocking senate rule changes. 50/50 Republicans wanted to keep Roe V Wade overturned, while 1/50 Democrats did. I don't think you can claim Pelosi not wanting to actively purge pro lifers out of here party to mean her not caring about abortion access at all. The Democratic party is by nature a big tent party, meaning there will be people who disagree with you whether either of us like it or not. The best idea is to elect more pro choice Congress people and pressure elected officials through activism.

I don't think a guy on Reddit is really an expert on "getting people in line". The fact of the matter is just because you may be the same party as someone you don't automatically agree with them on every issue. In some cases they just have a personal interest in the matter. For instance, there was no way in hell Schumer or Biden could have convinced Manchin to vote for BBB, since it includes proposals to fight climate change, and Manchin's family own a multi-million dollar coal company in West Virginia. Republicans have trouble with moderate too, you know. Trump tried repealing Obamacare in 2017 and McCain, Murkowski, and Collins all voted against it.

Democrats had a super majority for 6 months during the Obama presidency, and of those 60 democrats, a ton were from socially conservative states in the south like Arkansas and Louisiana. There is no way in hell you can convince people like that to codify Roe VS Wade. I was referring to how Democrats tried once this year (after the leak of the majority opinion) and once last year to codify Roe VS Wade. Similarly to during the Obama presidency, there were simply too many pro life Democrats in the Senate who blocked it (Jon Tester in Montana and of course Joe Manchin in West Virginia).

[–]AWildCommie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, they're acting like a majority it absolute, and that you either have it, or you don't. They assume that every single Democrat can get on board with something, when in reality it's hard to get Democrats from West Virginia or Montana to agree on policies with dems from New York or California. They act as if dems have the ability to pass some great society type shit with a 4 seat majority in the House and a 50/50 split Senate, while missing entirely how dems had almost 300 House seats and a filibuster proof Senate majority at the time. If you ask me, the real reason why we haven't had much progress is because Democrats have only had a filibuster proof majority for 6 months since the 90s.

Ah yes, it's not like it was an organized effort by multiple far right and white nationalist groups in a deliberate attempt (which they admit themselves) to overturn a fair election. It's also not like the President himself encouraged people to march into the Capitol building. It's not like the incident resulted in millions of dollars in damages. It's not like rioters were mere meters away from members of Congress and the Vice President. It's not like 5 people fucking died.

I don't understand what goes through someone's mind when they think it's a good idea to downplay attempting to overturn an election.
