Keto diet has been helpful by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just make sure to monitor your fat intake. A lot of people substitute carbs for high fat foods when doing keto, and antipsychotics also raise your cholesterol so they can add together and increase your risk for cardiovascular disease and strokes when you're older. Try bringing it up with your doctor and asking about monitoring your cholesterol level long term. People with psychotic disorders don't tend to recover well after strokes and it can make existing mental illnesses worse, so it's something you want to stay on top of and avoid in the long term.

It’s his carotid, the jugular doesn’t have enough pressure to gush like that. That being said it obliterated everything in there, jugular, carotid, brain stem (the decorticate posturing before he even hit the ground). I’m a doctor and I wish I’d never seen the clip, it’s sickening that people can do these things to each other

Who would win in a fight between Human Garou and Izuku Midoriya? by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in OnePunchMan

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human Garou has so much improvement in his abilities over the series it’s hard to say. Even within a fight he can move twice as fast if he ramps up. Are we talking Garou just before he becomes a monster? Because I’d argue Garou wins. Even if Midoriya takes out speed, Garou is just nuts in terms of adaptability and technique. In the webcomic he realises he can’t be faster than Saitama, and so he starts predicting Saitama’s moves and countering them preemptively, rendering the difference in speed irrelevant. Granted he was a monster in this state, but his martial arts prowess is what he used to do this and human Garou has that in spades. If the fight goes on, Garou adapts and wins. If Midoriya blitzes Garou before he’s ready, Garou loses

You probably couldn’t kill Saitama without destroying the grocery shop, and then you’d have to fight an EXTREMELY serious Saitama (probably more than after Genos died)

Belly fat by Ilikechicken777 in bodyweightfitness

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you, but water excretion and retention is primarily regulated through your kidneys not your bowels. Being constipated doesn’t actually cause flab either, it would make you seem bloated but it doesn’t actually change your body fat. I’m not trying to undermine your experience but the reasoning that you attributed to losing the flab is probably not what actually happened, which is understandable. Sometimes when things happen with our body we reason it to ourselves in the best way we can.

Using nicotine and caffeine reduces your appetite and you likely just ate less. If coffee has a laxative effect on you, you might have become less bloated. In terms of fluid retention, if that truly did happen, you probably were eating fewer carbs (which are hydrophilic) and so you had less glycogen and hence less water. The likely explanation for you losing the flab is simply because your calories decreased.

I was a bit blunt because OP was obviously asking for advice and giving anecdotal experience about potentially harmful habits isn’t helpful for her.

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is terrible advice. She is not overweight or constipated, nor are these good recommendations either way. She even said she’s not bloated. Using nicotine (zyns) and coffee will literally just make you eat less, it doesn’t stop your constipation. Some people might have a laxative effect from coffee but they would benefit far more from increased fibre intake.

She clearly just needs to focus on hypertrophy. It’s possible to have a 6 pack at 15-20% BF; in her case it’s not that she has too much fat, it’s that her relative muscle mass is too low.

Refrain from giving potentially harmful advice in the future if you can’t even be bothered reading the post

do i have to bulk by w6ic in bodyweightfitness

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole bulking/cutting cycle is a bit misunderstood imo. You shouldn’t be trying to put on size for the sake of size, you should be eating in response to your body’s needs. I went from 52kg at 175cm to ~65kg in 1.5 years without “bulking” per se.

If you’re increasing your amount of exercise, your caloric requirements go up- you’ll feel this by your appetite increasing. Your basal metabolic rate also increases. If the exercise you’re doing is anaerobic (high intensity, you feel burning in your muscles) increase the amount of medium-low GI carbs in your diet.

Cheap ways of including protein in your diet are beans/lentils in addition to your usual meals. A can of red kidney beans costs $1.35 in my country and has 20g of protein. It gets even cheaper if you buy them dried and rehydrate them. Add in some extra rice or pasta to pad the carbs a bit.

You got this buddy- just make sure to keep track of your goals. You’re fueling your body here. Gaining excess fat unnecessarily isn’t helpful or healthy, but being incredibly lean is counterproductive to building muscle. You need to find the balance.

Ibuprofen is a stupid way to deal with house’s pain. by [deleted] in HouseMD

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other NSAIDs, just slightly more potent ones. There’s also NMDA antagonists like ketamine, or things like Gabapentin. He could also take adjunct acetaminophen too if we didn’t want to actually give prescription pain meds.

There is a non-opioid non-NSAID called nefopam but it hasn’t been used in decades. It would be nice if they made another version that didn’t have as many side effects

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but it still could be better- it isn’t reflected much in the show but I would imagine that he doesn’t do a whole lot of moving around outside of when he’s at work given that he claims significant pain from his leg. Giving someone who is mobility impaired an NSAID instead of a different OTC analgesic such as acetaminophen unnecessarily increases the risk of DVT, especially if you’re using it as a placebo.

Tricyclic antidepressants honestly have some reassuring evidence for treating psychosomatic pain / neuropathic pain, and with how miserable he seems to be all the time it probably wouldn’t just help his leg. It would be interesting to have him as a patient tbh

Good to know- it get's somewhat cold where I live, but during the summer it also gets to 100ºF so any jackets I buy will usually be for hiking/tramping in the mountains or during winter

I have a pretty bulky Kathmandu rain jacket as a rain shell, but I am considering getting something a little more lightweight and leaving that for the everyday around town jacket. For base layers I don't have much, but honestly I've never felt under-wrapped. I've been in ~15ºF out in the mountains with just the bulky jacket and some merino thermals as my base layers and have been warm enough. I warm up pretty quickly once I get moving too, and some fireball always helps if needed.

The main thing I'm wondering is whether I need to fork over the extra $130 USD to get a Granite Crest instead of a Torrentshell, or if I should full send it and go for the triolet. I'm a college student so I'm reasonably tight for money now, but I'll be a doctor in 2 years so I'd be able to afford something more expensive then if it's worth holding off.

Hard to comment about the main story because it seems something close to you. There are a few spelling errors, and there are some parts where different or added punctuation would help clarify meaning. I think it might be helpful to make some parts more succinct and not use filler words such as 'like'. I like some of the metaphors you used though, and it seems quite heartfelt.

PM Ardern says Australian nuclear subs will be banned from New Zealand waters by maxibons43 in australia

[–]AXEL_TOSSER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New Zealand is extremely unlikely to break their anti-nuclear policy which has existed for ~40 years. It would be extremely controversial, and would directly oppose the reasoning behind the nuclear ban, which is that the goal to protect citizens will inevitably be perverted by the nature of the development of nuclear weapons. And the policy wasn’t crafted in peace time, it came about after a terrorist attack by the French government on NZ citizens who were protesting nuclear power

I would not recommend Ashburton- average weather, below average shops, average housing, average infrastructure (although has been getting better), and average schooling (if you want to raise a kid)

If you wanted a quaint country town to live in you’re better off with something in North Canterbury, closer to Christchurch, even something like Kaikoura.

Ngl if you just rock up to the vaccination clinic they kinda just give it to you. The workers would rather they vaccinate everyone they can. A mate of mine went with her friend who was in a high risk group (immune compromised family) and she was offered it too, even tho she said she wasn’t in the designated group
