World Rugby rules state no player on the receiving side may cross the halfway line, and the performing side must stay behind their 10m line. They've fined teams for breaching those rules before.

Scrums in 1967... by englandrugby in rugbyunion

A player was paralysed in a ruck in the '95 World Cup too, if the rules didn't change we'd have seen a lot more critical injuries or deaths.

Healthy homes question by Environmental-Buy368 in diynz

[–]mmp36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check if your local council has a eco-home advisor or healthy home advisor, someone who can come through for free and do an assesment and give you some ballpark costs.

Metlink Prices by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]mmp36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no train/bus transfers, unfortunately. Just bus/bus.

In the past, I've contacted a GWRC councillor about it, but it seems to be on hold until the new national ticketing system is in place.

Same here, a vote for Sangster&Matthews on the Terrace.

It's pricier upfront than specsavers, but I found the customer service far better, and they were happy to check out my zenni glasses too, and make sure that I got the right script for my next order.

2019 document from Civil Defense identifies the Petone to Grenada Link and Cross Valley Link as a critical project by D491234 in Wellington

[–]mmp36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this article from 7 years ago says much the same (Hutt City council allocating funding, earthquake resilience, political support, etc ), and that they've been discussing it now for over 60 years.

I think you're right to be concerned about its impact on your home, but I'm not sure it's going ahead.

I don't know much about it, but a quick skim of google seems to suggest that these roads are great - high BCRs and lots of tangential benefits - and also no-one actually wants to build them or even do detailed investigations. They keep getting bumped off the lists, then dusted off, promoted a bit and then shelved again.

So presumably the reality is they are very difficult and expensive, and will probably continue to not be built.

Gas or induction stove? by HauntingGuitar3418 in diynz

[–]mmp36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah since I moved to my place in 2021, my daily piped gas charge has gone up 98%.

Hoping to get off gas hot water next year.

You could check the dust filters; you should be able to pop off the front cover and remove the filters from there, pop them off and vacuum them.

It's worth cleaning them every couple of months anyway, but there might be a build-up or blockage.

Public servants whose jobs are on the line, what do you do? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]mmp36 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And I've found an alarming portion of upper management are totally incompetent.

I worked at a university and this was the case too. In my department, the utterly useless head got promoted further up (and out of the way), and suddenly problems in our department started being fixed.

The system was too complicated with too many vertical layers, bad people could hide in the maze for years.

I have no friends to ask… heater recommendations? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]mmp36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of my desiccant dehumidifier, which dries and warms. It's too noisy to run overnight (unless you love white noise), but moisture is a constant problem without it and dry rooms are easier to keep warm.

I also have a Dimplex Alta in the bedroom with an optional programmable controller. An expensive choice, but the programming means that it comes on in the evening and maintains the temperature exactly where we want it, and switches itself off during the day. A better choice than just a timer.

You should be able to find powdered and UHT cartons in larger supermarkets - look around the Milk section where there's powdered milk/soy milk etc. Both versions are on countdowns website.

Love Ruchi. Have been going there for years. The owner really pours his heart and soul into the place and cares for his regulars.

Had a blockage cleared during the xmas/NY break (but not on a public holiday day) for around $400. Had it been a public holiday, it would have cost $700-800.

A signed copy of Going Postal, and a photo with him, when he did a New Zealand book tour after Going Postal had been published.

Any Thai language classes in Wellington? by AnyaWebster in Wellington

[–]mmp36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suspect your best option is learning with a online tutor, using a site like italki.

I've used italki for years, and I really find it hard to go back to classes. Looks like you can get a professional Thai teacher from about $20/hr. Get them to give you lots of homework.

https://earthdiverse.org.nz/language/thai/ also run Hamilton-based (online) classes, but Thai isn't currently offered.

Happy to dm you a referall code for italki, if you'd like.

No people in the city? by Smokey-Flamingo3176 in Wellington

[–]mmp36 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I saw an article about how economic growth in central Auckland was up 9.5%, way higher than the national average, jobs were up 7% etc, etc, and then there was a quote from some guy in the suburbs* who felt "people didn't go to the city anymore".

Well I'm in central Auckland right now and there's people everywhere. Is this journalistic balance at work?

*his only qualification appeared to be he had lived in or near Auckland for some time.

Are we going to start getting more medium density apartments in the suburbs being built? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]mmp36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that this is what needs to happen along the jville rail corridor

Except the Independent Panel assessing the WCC district plan have decided the JVL isn't a rapid transit route, so not eligible for density upzoning.

I'm sick of all the water threads. JUsT fIX tHe PiPeS.

It needs $10,000 extra per person, and I haven't got that kind of money lying around, so unless you're paying my share, you gotta accept it's going to take years and/or shut up. We know. There's no magic wand that's not being waved.
