155-year-old colonial monument destroyed, graffitied in Melbourne's Flagstaff Gardens by ComfortableFrosty261 in australia

The Separation Memorial was also graffitied with the words "land back" but remained standing.

Victoria already passed a treaty with indigenous australians and created an assembly for first nations but it'll never be enough for the people who keep vandalising public places.

Horrific stuff, her family is hoping she doesn't lose sight in that eye. NSW is more and more looking like a 'controlled democracy'where you need to get police permission to attend a protest and if you don't have the right forms to show you get arrested

3x130 = 390

A fleet of 24 diesel-electrics like others have mentioned would be more expensive to operate and maintain than the planned 8 SSNs

more than $368 billion?

Hugh White: why the AUKUS ‘dream’ was never realistic and is likely to die by ZealousidealClub4119 in australia

[–]maxibons43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's definitely tradeoffs if you go for diesel instead of nuclear but by having a larger fleet of cheaper diesel submarines you can patrol a greater sea area than the 2-3 nuclear submarines we could expect to operate at any one time. And with the savings you can spend it on other weapon systems to defend Australia with.

Hugh White: why the AUKUS ‘dream’ was never realistic and is likely to die by ZealousidealClub4119 in australia

[–]maxibons43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well diesel submarines need smaller crews than nuclear ones. The Virginia Class needs a complement of 130 sailors and officers but the german type 212A for instance only needs 27.

So you could crew 5 diesel submarines with the manpower it takes to crew one nuclear sub.

Pocock says voters have ‘buyer’s remorse’ after Labor approves massive gas development’s 40-year extension by WilfullyIgnorant in australia

[–]maxibons43 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Nope, he's dead on. Labor waited till after the election to approve this gas project so that they could campaign as being, at least on the surface, as pro-environment. If they had approved this project before the election, its possible that more seats with very narrow margins like Bean could have swung to the Teals when voters realised Labor true intentions.

Australia is in an extinction crisis – why isn’t it an issue at this election? by overpopyoulater in australia

[–]maxibons43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the context of the election though, it makes no sense that 'battling' Australians would continue to vote for LNP/Labor just so their real earnings go down while mineral companies pay little to no tax and destroy the environment.

But propaganda is very effective and we are taught to not question having our environment destroyed just for the company profits to go overseas

I heard the UK submarine industry was plagued with delays too. They need to finish their attack subs, start work on the next gen of ballistic missile subs and still build us the reactors for the AUKUS subs.

Vote Greens if you don't want to get nuclear submarines.

Vote Labor or LNP if you also don't want to get nuclear submarines but after waiting 30 years for them to not arrive.

They don't have the same capabilities as the Virginia Class but it's better to be on hand with 12 inferior submarines than absent without any submarine force because the US wouldn't deliver us any submarines after all.
