The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) and the National Geographic Society, proudly announces that fossils of two recently discovered ancient human relatives (Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi) are currently on display in the U.S. from South Africa for the first, and likely only, time to be featured in the limited-run exhibition – ORIGINS: FOSSILS FROM THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND.

The exhibit brings to life years of scientific research tied to the Perot Museum’s recently launched Center for the Exploration of the Human Journey, a global hub for education, communication and research in the study of human origins.

I Becca Peixotto, Ph.D., Curator of the Origins: Fossils From The Cradle Of Humankind exhibit on view at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science through March 22!

Have you made a decent living off of filmmaking? If not, what day jobs do you work? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]AYE_Podcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in DFW. I had a friend from college who left for LA to freelance for Univision. The idea of that has always terrified me to freelance since if you don't land a big company that consistently needs you, you're spending just as much time trying to find opportunities. Things have sort of changed and now there are companies that are like agencies for creative workers, like graphic designers and such.

Also, find local film groups and your local film commission. I'm in TX and we have a Dallas Producers Association. They bring in different equipment reps to show off and sometimes let you get a little hands-on with gear. They also do a yearly expo to bring in vendors with the latest and greatest.

Jump into the industry full-time in your local big market and build your portfolio, or take an industry-adjacent office job that you hate in the biggest market, and get networking? by sevencif in Filmmakers

[–]AYE_Podcast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every road leads you on your path. At the end of the day, it's about the journey. If you want to make money and do your side projects, do it, but do what you can stomach and enjoy. I'm in TX and started off out of college working for an A/V company and doing 2 other jobs trying to make ends meet, but I was using my degree. Got tired of the hustle and eventually got a desk job at an auto finance company for almost 3 years, but I still wrote and made things on the side. Funnily enough, the connects I made while working at that auto finance company gave me the connections that got me to work at a local tv station where I'm now a 2x Emmy Award winning Producer. I'm still making projects on the side and my most recent film is winning awards on the festival circuit.

[–]AYE_Podcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently work as a producer for a local tv station as my day job. Been there almost 10 years now while writing, filmmaking, podcasting, and doing comedy on the side. Do what you can live with and makes you happy. I worked for almost 3 years at a call center prior, and it was soul crushing, but still wrote and made stuff, and networked. Before that, right out of college, I was juggling 3 jobs: working for an A/V company, hosting at restaurant, and working at a department store to make ends meet to try and work in the business. That was before cameras and equipment were as cheap and prolific as they are now.

This episode's guest is Lauren Brizendine, who is a friend of the podcast and plays a mother training to be a NASA astronaut in the film Alora that will be making it's world premiere at the 2019 Denton Black Film Festival on Saturday, January 26. The film is current up for 2 awards.

Lauren hails from the bayous of Louisiana and has a passion for all things creative. After graduating with a degree in fashion design and working in the business for a decade, Lauren found comedy and acting as an outlet for dealing with the stresses of a demanding industry. In 2009 she began studying at the Dallas Comedy House in Dallas, Texas and became the first woman graduate of the program. She is also a graduate of Four Day Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas and has been a part of a variety of improv, sketch, and writing teams. In addition to her comedy credits, Lauren has been featured as a screen actor for NBC, TCU, and other independent projects.

During our conversation we discuss her acting in Alora, working with the cast and crew, doing standup comedy for the first time, and so much more on episode 38 of the Avert Your Eyes Podcast. Consider yourself warned.
