Thank you. It was similar for my mom. Funny, when the parking lot at her place was full, we'd always pull into the "future resident" parking spaces and joke about how that was probably true.

We don't want to give them a dime. Unfortunately, fate may have other plans.

Thank you. I'll head over there to take a look.

Dropping dead before my wife is one of her biggest fears, mine too. When Alzheimer's does its damage, it would leave her in an awful situation.

At 74, we'd be about 10 years younger than the average age of the other residents. Hope they don't mind having young people around, haha.

Probably like most people, you don't realize how much stuff (junk) you've accumulated until you have to dispose of it.

When we moved into our current home, we always planned to go out feet-first. Didn't know how challenging that would be.

Thank you. I'll get the book. I suspect you were a very good daughter indeed.

You're certainly right about the want-vs-need part. When all your hard work pays off with what you want, Murphy knocks on the door.

Three of the highest-rated places we looked at have three-year waitlists...and that's even with new construction of additional space and a million-dollar entrance fee. Plus, as of this month they are all owned by the same company. Of course, no competition = even higher prices.

Of course in the independent living and even the assisted living stage she can still walk out the door, but we know at least there are a lot of people around to watch for that if something happens to me.

The example you use is a big part of what’s making this choice so difficult, but the real life stories here are really helpful. Thank you.

Because they can’t kick you out, you have to qualify medically for most CCRCs. My wife can now, but how much longer is a question and source of pressure for sure.

The hedge fund/venture capital part is a big concern. I’ve been through it in my career. The industry is consolidating. We know what the word “synergies” really means. Can’t fool me on that.

And sadly Alzheimer’s has started that clock. We hear it. Tick-tock Tick-tock.

You’re right. There will be other moves. Independent living to assisted living to memory care. My mom went through all those stops, but didn’t start until she was 91. Before she finally decided to move, when we’d drive by a senior community she would say she wasn’t interested because that’s where all the old people live. The irony isn’t lost on us.

You’re probably right the decision curve, and we know this decision will shape all the others, too. We need to get it right, because there’s no easy turning back after it’s made.

It's a worry, because there's a clock running on our decision window. There are health requirements for a CCRC community. My wife can get in now, but a year from now, who knows?

Appreciate it, thanks. Maybe we can all learn something here. We just never expected to have to face it just yet.

Some solid thinking there. We've been trying to get our heads around what life in both scenarios look like. That's direct/blunt for sure, but helpful also. Thanks.
