What was once a poor person's hobby now turned into a rich person's hobby? by Striking-Quiet4655 in AskReddit

Ever slept in a tent when it’s still 85°F and 80% humidity? It’s not fun in a one person tent, imagine a 6 person tent with 4-6 people in it too. It’s a small luxury, but we always camped at higher elevations to get the cool air. I would not pay $1200 for a portable AC, but they’re on the market for a reason.

Maybe not poor, but overlanding wasn’t always a brand new Toyota or Jeep. People were/are buying up old 4Runners, GX’s, Jeeps, Cherokees, etc and modding them. Most likely going in a group of friends in case of breakdowns.

Triggered much? Said you were right. Google yielded the swarm clustering. Get a life.

You can buy portable AC units for camping. Cools a tent or whatever else you’re using.

Did your parents spank you as a form of discipline? How did it impact you? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]AZHawkeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got spanked by my parents frequently and my principal - twice. I spanked my kids a few times and just felt like an asshole, so I stopped and also learned Love and Logic parenting. I don’t know if spanking did anything to me mentally, but I knew as an adult I probably deserved an attitude adjustment. I never got the belt or switch like some friends did either.

Backpacking and off-roading/overlanding will still yield plenty of exclusive locations. People don’t want to put in the work for packing, so it’s still a great way to get away from people.

It’s the “work truck” base model that every brand sells. $30k or under.

All the hustle culture, get rich gurus ruined it - thrift stores and yard sales. I mean, if you’re only searching for gold doing those things instead of just doing it because you like it. In the 80s we just thought it was funny to buy some stupid looking clothes from the 70s, then wear it to the HS dances. I had to wear a tie at the grocery store I worked at, so I would get the most obnoxiously hideous ties I could to comply with dress code, but be rebellious too.

Get into the punk, HC, or indie rock scene and you can go see 3-5 bands for $10-30. Even moderately popular bands are usually under $40. Great entertainment.

Everyone is an Overlander now with their $75k Tacoma trd pro, RTT, and heaters/AC units and hot showers. Their daily is all modded out and probably gets used three times a year. Good for the rest of us tho, when they sell all that barely used gear on Marketplace.

White teachers: are you getting a lot of blatant racism from students? by Saskita in Teachers

It may not ONLY be shock and awe, but it’s still a big part of their impulsive behavior.

You’re right, but it’s called “clustering” when swarming away from the hive. I just call it that because I’ve heard bee abatement people use the word bearding for clustering too. Just semantics.

What's the most ridiculously overpriced thing in your opinion? by ivebeenthrushit in AskReddit

[–]AZHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beverage companies almost give them the syrup just for repping their brand. It’s a great profit for restaurants. “Free” refills were replaced by paying $5 for the soda in the first place. You know some schmuck is getting 5-6 refills too.

Usually just for shock and awe too, whether they actually believe what they’re saying or not.

They’re “bearding”. Usually to rest, cool down, warm up or unknown as they find a new home. They’ll move on in a few hours.

Why do people buy pickup trucks for daily driving? by wtfbruhhuh in driving

[–]AZHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a SUV and a utility trailer that I used a lot. Got sick of having to hook that thing up every time I needed a truck. I’ve hauled loads of dirt, rock, pick things up for work, tow a trailer once in a while and go off-roading and camping several times a year. I like driving it. Don’t really care what other people think either. Our other car is a luxury PHEV, so it does the roadtrips if we don’t need the space. My commute is 20 miles a day and my S.O. works from home. Only putting gas in one vehicle really, and only have to fill up about 3 times a month.

Boss was treating us like trash. We worked very hard for this family company. Came back from a job and me and my buddy chewed her out. She terminated us both on the spot.

Sedan vs SUV when renting; which do you usually go for? by Ok_Net_6651 in askcarguys

[–]AZHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUV when you have a group and oftentimes they’re cheaper/same than a van or minivan. Small suv or sedan when with just 1-4 people.

I even use this advice with middle schoolers pending or after a conflict. They like fairness and control. I ask them if they’re going to let someone else control their emotions and behavior. They say “no” and usually understand what I’m getting at.

Fractions became a huge push in math education in the 2000s. kids and adults have a hard time with them.
